Captain’s Message Members & Friends, Six weeks of Level 5 restrictions are coming to an end and our Course will re-open on Tuesday 1st December. A fantastic start to the Christmas season! Competitions are permitted to re- commence and in preparation of the return to golf and competitions, this edition of Breaking Points covers the new handicap system now in operation. Men’s handicap secretary, Denis O’Sullivan, provides a reminder of the changes and pointers to note relating to our handicaps. The postponed first round of the Wehrly Bros. Winter League will now be played on Sunday 13th December and the draw is included below. With a record entry of 160 members, it is expected to be exciting and competitive!. Best of luck to all and enjoy. For reference purposes, Denis, has kindly included a handicap sheet for the 9 hole Winter League competition. The last six weeks provided an opportunity to repair fairway and tee box divots on the Course. Thanks to all the members who assisted and to Terry Brady for organising the positioning of the divot boxes, which you may have noticed on your many walks. The costal erosion work continues and I again wish to acknowledge the members for their generous support and for the work and contribution of those who organised the project. In particular, I take the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of our former Club Chairperson, Eoin Armstrong, for his role in this project and his dedication to the Club over the past number of years. The year 2020 brought many challenges to the Club and with Eoin’s experience and as an able Chairperson, ensured we came through the year successfully. Thank you Eoin. Best of luck to our new Chairperson, Brendan Feeney. Congratulations to our newly elected Lady Captain Caroline and Lady President Maire. Best wishes to you both for your year ahead. Well done to John Durcan on his election to the regional executive of Golf Ireland. The Men’s Club AGM is on 13th December. Due to the COVID 19 restrictions, unfortunately, a meeting in the Clubhouse will not be possible this year and further details of the meeting will be circulated on BRS. Regards, John Mc Hugh Captain CSGC
To All Members, Men’s Handicaps As we get ready to return to Golf, I just want to remind everybody of the changes that have taken place in relation to Handicaps and what to watch out for. 1. The Handicap Committee changed some Handicap Indexes on 14th November so please check to see if your Index has changed. This was necessary to balance some inaccuracies in the transition. We were very careful with the changes and we hope you find them satisfactory. As I have said previously you can appeal if you wish by emailing info@countysligogolfclub.ie or by writing to the Golf Club. 2. Once you know your Handicap Index you can find the Course Handicap and the Playing Handicap on the Notice Board in the men’s locker room for 18-hole rounds. Of course, these should also be on the computer. 3. For the shorter Winter competitions, the adjusted Handicap will be on the computer and should be put on the card. These competitions do not go into your Handicap record because they are not 18-hole scores. Also, the use of mats precludes them from being used. 4. For 18-hole Competitions the Course Handicap must be on your card or you will be disqualified from the competition. The Handicap Index and the Playing Handicap should also be on the card but these are optional. Again, the Computer should do this. 5. The Playing Handicap is for Competitions only. Otherwise you use the Course Handicap. So, for a friendly fourball you use the Course Handicap. 6. New Members should use the Handicaps that they were given. They will become active in the new system after playing 3 rounds. It is important to note that the Handicap Charts that you need are on the Notice Board. You just need to look up your Handicap Index on www.golfireland.ie. You must register first. For Saturday Competitions the computer should give you the number of shots that you have over the number of holes that are played. For Society Golf or a friendly 4-Ball you should use the Course Handicap. The Playing Handicap will be used when the Competition season starts. Hope you enjoy your golf. Denis O’Sullivan Handicap Secretary
Wehrly Bros. Sponsored Winter League The 2020/2021 Winter League kicks off on the 13th December very kindly Sponsored by Wehrly Bros. This year we have a record entry of 80 pairings and a special thanks to you all for supporting the Winter League again. As we come to the end of a very challenging year our spirits have been lifted by our return to golf. There is no doubt that this year will be the most competitive ever and team captains should monitor performances and identify new players for their teams. At the outset looking at the sections it will be challenging to qualify and win the winter league but we have identified pairings who we expect to be competing for the trophy. If your names are not there then prove us wrong!!! Hallissy & Feeney, Kevin & John Paul Flanagan, Mick & Gavin Barrett, O’Grady & Doyle, Brady & Feeney, Mc Manus & Gaynor, Hodgson & Mc Namara, Armstrong & Devaney, Mc Daid & Darling, Murphy & Demmel Once again a very special thanks to Tony & Richard Wehrly for their continued sponsorship in these very difficult trading times. Gerry Mc Manus
Men’s Winter League Handicap For Winter League Sundays, there will be charts available on the Notice Board and in Bomore to convert your Handicap Index to a Winter League Handicap. See Handicap Table on next slide. If you don’t manage to access your Handicap Index for the Winter League then the Starters will provide it for you. Denis O’Sullivan Handicap Secretary
Winter League Shots over 9 Holes (W.L) You get the Winter League Handicap by multiplying the Course Handicap by 9, and dividing by 20, similar to previous years. You then round up or down.

Update on Ladies Handicaps Ladies, Now that we are returning to golf, just a reminder that during Level 5, the new World Handicapping System (“WHS”) was introduced and Golf Ireland issued Handicap Index to all members. The WHS introduced new terms - Handicap Index, Course Handicap and Playing Handicap. • Handicap Index is available on the Golf Ireland website and is the basis for calculating your Handicap. • Course Handicap is your handicap after applying a formula to your Handicap Index based on our slope rating - note the Ladies formula differs to the Men. • Playing Handicap applies a % to the Course Handicap depending on the competition of the day and is the handicap to be used in competitions. Whether playing competitions or playing socially with friends, to calculate your handicap. • Firstly, obtain your Handicap Index by registering on the Golf Ireland website www.golfireland.ie. and going to My Golf Login tab. A useful video for a step by step guide on how to register is below. You will require your ILGU card, your number and the four digit pin number on the back of the card. https://www.facebook.com/golfingunionofireland/videos/662348204418313/ • Secondly, for your Course Handicap, please refer to the list in the Ladies locker room to convert your Handicap Index to your Course Handicap. There is no need to apply the detailed formula yourself! Always ensure the Course Handicap is recorded on your card. • Lastly, your Playing Handicap for competitions will depend on the competition of the day e.g - 95% of your Course Handicap for single stableford/ stroke play competitions. Note - handicaps to be available on the computer when entering competitions. I hope this explains the new World Handicapping System now in operation. An interesting few weeks ahead for all of us members. Regards Sinead Mc Hugh Ladies Handicap Secretary
