INTRODUCTION In his book Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, the late Carl Sagan practices, the bringing under vine of new terroirs, and the introduction of heretofore ponders the certainty and unquestionability of history: “If you are unsure of the facts unheard of grape varieties to our vineyards. [of an historical event] replaying the event is an unavailable option. You can only dig into old records. You cannot even ask questions of the participants. Every one of them is dead.” From its maiden voyage in 1975, the Nederburg Auction has grown in stature, and it has also evolved in nature to satisfy the demands of the contemporary fine wine buyer: Delving into the history of winemaking at the Cape illustrates this perennial uncertainty it remains an affair of elegance, but it’s offering has been honed to showcase only the when we contemplate what Jan van Riebeeck is said to have written in his journal on finest this industry has to offer, both young and old. February 2 1659. The most popular translation reads: “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes”, but an alternative translation suggests he - Norman McFarlane wrote: “Today - praise be to heaven - for the very first time the grapes of the Cape were pressed for winemaking.” Whichever it might have been is lost in the uncertainty of history, as is the varietal used, or the quality and drinkability of the wine vinified from the first pressing of grapes from the Company Gardens. Instead, it is the subject of informed speculation based on available historical record. Travel writer David Bristow, in a speculative piece about the provenance of the local wine industry wrote: “It’s thought the commander made his first wines from French Muscadel, but it was by all accounts rather rancid.” But the uncertainty that oft bedevils history does not cloud the inevitable evolution that has occurred in the last 359 years. Granted, it has been in fits and starts, but if we look back in time, the landmark events are plain to see, from the pressing of those first grapes to the opening up of the world’s wine markets when our great leap forward happened in 1994. But wine being what it is, we’re privileged to be able to take a journey back into the past, to time travel if you will, when we open that special bottle of really old wine that we have preserved for a special occasion. It is at such times that we are able to marvel at how the enigmatic fruit of the grape has evolved as it slumbered in the cellar, and if we’re lucky and have another bottle or two, speculate on what yet may come to pass, when we open the next. It is this nexus of enigma and evolution that draws in and beguiles the wine-lover, spurring the desire to explore, to acquire, to cellar and to enjoy wines that anchor themselves in two time dimensions: the venerable and exquisite creations of the winemaker’s art – this year a 1948 Monis Port will go under the hammer – and the contemporary wines that have benefited from the evolution in viticultural and cellar 6 7

NONCONFORMITY - HOW THE SA WINE LANDSCAPE IS EVOLVING “South Africa is still ‘the most dynamic and exciting New World country’, thanks to terroir, Both of these funds are focussing on the “once-in-a-generation,” “rock star” 2015 vine age, and talented winemakers. And the world is taking notice.” Wine Advocate’s Neal vintage, where they have been ahead of the curve and secured these wines, most of Martin said this in his authoritative 2014 South Africa report, which is still true to this day. which have been produced in very small quantities. This is a massive compliment to and acknowledgment of the dynamism and bold confidence our winemakers are taking in It is this evolution of our industry, one forged by hardships, a wider world view and a return to their creations. Jancis Robinson, for one, waxes lyrical about the future of South African the soil, that the Nederburg Auction’s 2018 theme “Evolve” celebrates. wine. She says no other country, possibly except France, can boast such a radical group of young winemakers changing the wine horizon. A quick glance at the Auction attendance figures over the past five years will show the very encouraging increase in private buyers. Collectors, connoisseurs and wine lovers It is thanks to these daring and insightful producers that we get to invest in world-class from around the world are quietly sniffing out pockets of excellence, and going after these wines; ones that have been selected by global experts and wines specifically selected with iconic wines with a vengeance, as ever-rising prices indicate. Contemporary producers are further aging in mind. These well-curated gems are being noticed by those with the buying achieving record prices for their creations as quality and demand increase, collectors and the power of pounds, euros and dollars. Locals will hopefully appreciate the current price like are willing to pay a premium for these outstanding and currently under-valued wines. points before it’s too late. It is a vote of confidence in the Nederburg Auction as an appropriate platform for curated, Enjoy every sip! provenanced investment decisions. Those ahead of the curve know, and will tell you, that South Africa is riding a wave of good wine fortune. And while the rest of the wine public might still be deliberating about whether wine collecting makes investment sense, those determined and convinced are not only debating it. They are putting up their money. There is wide acknowledgement that South African wine has come along in leaps and bounds, and there are increasing calls to right the incessant under-valuing of our cellar creations. The current level of success for South African wines is driven jointly by the rediscovered mastery of our pre-democracy winemakers; and the more recent accolades garnered by the so-called New Wave of winemakers increasingly unlocking what our terroir really has to offer. In most instances producers are no longer following the textbook one-size-fits-all approach. They are gaining skills from abroad, but literally starting from the ground up by matching the correct vines and blends to the terroir as opposed to forcing vines on the terroir. South African wine is being recognised as an investment asset class, along with its European and global counterparts. This year alone has seen at least two wine funds investing in South Africa wine; Roland Peens’ Wine Cellar VIP 2015 Fund and Ken Kinsey-Quicks’ Fine Diamond Wine Investment Fund. The former’s opportunities were sold out within one week. The latter will come to market with its second tranche in late September. 12 13

CHARITY AUCTION BENEFICIARY: THE NELSON MANDELA FOUNDATION To mark the 100th birthday year of former President Nelson Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Foundation has been selected as this year’s beneficiary. The Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) focuses its work on promoting dialogue as a vital instrument for addressing critical social issues and the most effective vehicle for sharing and growing memory, and for engaging it in the promotion of justice and social cohesion. This work is an attempt to find sustainable solutions to these critical social issues. The Foundation is involved with Childhood Development programmes and will focus on programmes within the most disadvantaged communities in the Cape Winelands. Its partner of choice is the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD) – a non-profit organisation founded in 1994 and committed to putting young children first by ensuring quality early childhood development for our country’s youngest citizens. The Centre for Early Childhood Development is already doing a lot of work with the most disadvantaged communities in the Cape Winelands. CECD’s early learning projects have had very positive impacts on the communities in which the centre works in that they have improved the knowledge of community members in areas such as Early Childhood Development (ECD) and the importance of early literacy and numeracy for young children to enable them to grow up as literate and numerate individuals. CECD’s projects increases both employment rates and awareness around the importance of an early education, as well as enhances ECD teachers’ abilities to teach young children in an effective manner. Many of the CECD’s projects have a focus on assisting parents in the communities in understanding the significance of ECD for their children and furthermore aim to enhance their ability to teach their children in their home environments. The Foundation also works to ensure the people of the world have access to an integrated, dynamic and trusted resource on Nelson Mandela's legacy. This helps them to promote his vision and work by convening dialogues and creating platforms for engagement around critical social justice issues. We ask all those attending the Charity Auction to open your hearts and wallets for the Nelson Mandela Foundation to support Nelson Mandela’s dream, vision and legacy by helping to create a Madiba in every generation. www.nelsonmandela.org Email: nmf@nelsonmandela.org 18 19
