Thank You, School Board Clerks and Staff In honor of School Board Clerk Appreciation Week (Feb. 14-18), APS recognizes Claudia Mercado, Carmen Mejia and JulieAnne Jones. Their hard work and dedication make a huge difference. They ensure the School Board office runs smoothly and keep the community informed and engaged. 1

APS Mask Update APS continues to review the latest health metrics and guidance regarding COVID-19 mitigation measures. The CDC currently recommends universal masking in K-12 settings. APS will continue to require* masks inside our schools to keep schools as safe as possible. All students will still be required to wear a mask on a school bus, because there is a federal requirement to mask on public transit. We are Stronger Together APS urges families to consider the progress we have made together to keep schools open and safe for all. • We have students and staff who have underlying health conditions, are immunocompromised, and are considered high risk. • APS continues the layered prevention strategies as currently recommended by the CDC and Department of Education for K-12 schools: – Vaccinations with boosters when available for all age groups, masks indoors, COVID testing, COVID response and contact tracing. • All students and staff are strongly urged to continue to opt-in for the weekly testing in school. • Vaccination rates in Arlington are high for all age groups and the vaccine is coming for our youngest children. 5
Elementary Mathematics Highlights • Based on MI data, 90% of APS students demonstrated growth during the Pandemic, 64% demonstrated more than 1-years' worth of growth • Students who engaged in more than 5 DreamBox lessons per week showed 1-2 grade-levels of growth • APS has outperformed the state in previous SOL mathematics assessments and in 2021 • Students who have not demonstrated growth or are performing below grade level in Math are receiving individualized intervention plans and support – Conducting systematic formative assessments and the Math Inventory screener to develop individualized plans and provide targeted interventions for students – Math Coaches and Interventionists collaborate with teachers to provided small group and individual support for students based on their needs • Students are engaging in rigorous, engaging, and interactive mathematics lessons through the use the Math Workshop structures • Over 700 participants (teachers and other school staff) in professional learning offered by the Mathematics Office during the pandemic 6
ARP/ESSER School Emergency Funding Update In November, APS applied for American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) III Funds. We were granted: • $2,039,087 for “Unfinished Learning” due to COVID (requested $15,534,682) - We will use funding to: o Hire staff to support and address unfinished learning needs of students, including specialists and interventionists o Purchase evidence-based instructional resources to address unfinished learning o Provide professional learning opportunities for staff during the Summer of 2022 and 2023 related to addressing the learning needs of students • $147,820 for Before & After School Programs - We will use funding to: o Hire staff to address the learning needs of students, including tutors, for before or after school programs at the elementary and middle school levels 8
Summer School and Summer Activities Fair The 2022 APS Summer School Program will provide in-person strengthening support, intervention, credit recovery, and Extended School Year services for students meeting specific eligibility criteria. Current VLP students who are eligible for summer school will be able to attend virtually. Eligibility: • Elementary and middle school students scoring Below Basic on Math Inventory, Reading Inventory, and intensive DIBELS assessments. • High school students needing credit recovery to graduate. • English language acquisition for English Learners. • Extended School Year to serve eligible students with disabilities. When will eligible students be identified? • Elementary/middle school: during parent-teacher conferences in early March. • High school: late May or early June Summer Activities Fair: View summer opportunities through the County and other providers! Bell Study Project The study is being conducted to review school start and end times and school day instructional minutes to: • Improve operational efficiencies • Streamline bus routes and schedules • Maximize instructional time Background • APS currently has eight different start and end times for 42 schools and programs o The goal is no more than four • Study will include a comparative analysis of instructional minutes to identify any needed changes • APS last conducted a comprehensive bell time study in 1999 10
Bell Study Timeline • January-March: – Vendor works with staff with the Department of Facilities and Operations to review bell times, transportation routes and instructional minutes • March-April: – Meetings with Technical Advisory Teams comprised of APS staff groups, advisory committees and school communities affected by the changes. – A survey will be made available in March to all APS families. • April-May: – Final recommendation to School Board on April 28 View full plan online: – Board will vote on May 12 apsva.us/engage/bell-study-project/ 11

Bright Spot – Be the “I” in Kind Applauding the Campbell Elementary Upstanders Club! • This is APS Kindness Week • The Upstanders Club is Campbell Elementary School’s No Place for Hate student group for 4th & 5th grades • Recognizes students who are kind and supportive of others through the Be the “I” in Kind campaign • Club members take photos of nominated students in front of the Be the “I” in Kind poster 13
