St. Vincent de Paul Parish 2 Sunday Scripture Re ection As we roughly reach the mid-point of Lent, our readings today remind us of the con nued focus that we are to have of preparing ourselves and renewing our spirit and commitment. At rst glance, our readings appear a bit strange for this me of Lent, but further re ec on allows us to see how they con nue to call us to change and conversion of heart and mind. The Gospel passage today is Jesus’ cleansing of the Temple, in which he drives out the money changers and those who were more focused on money and business than God. He then declares that he is the new Temple and that he will be raised up. As we re ect, we are reminded that the Temple in Judaism was the visible sign of the presence and protec on of God. Now, Jesus is that visible sign of the presence of God; he is the place where God dwells. Christ came in order to free us from what binds us and holds us back from embracing the love and goodness of God. As members of the church, we are also members of the mys cal Body of Christ, meaning that we are united in an in mate way with Jesus Christ and one another. As such, each of us is also a Temple; we are called to be the visible sign of the presence and love of God in the world, the place where God dwells. In the same way as he did in the Gospel, Jesus comes to us today to “drive out” and “overturn” those aspects of ourselves that make us less than who we truly are, to reduce the power of sin and vice in our lives – whatever that sin or vice may be. We are invited today to allow the Lord to come to us more fully, to help us grow out of self- centeredness and serve one another, following the commandments that lead us into life. In the Gospel, John says that Jesus ful lled the prophecy, “Zeal for your house will consume me” through his ac ons. I nd hope in the fact that Jesus has that same zeal or passion for each one of us, that he is con nuing to help us to grow, to change, to repent and to love. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 4 Pray : Serve : Share Please Make Your Gift to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world. Many families in our parish have received the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible. The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.” This is especially important during these trying and challenging times. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the archdiocese, the Annual Catholic Appeal funds services in our own parish. When we financially support the work of our parish, our archdiocese and the Catholic Church throughout the world, we experience a feeling of deep gratitude, especially when we contemplate God’s many gifts to us personally. By sharing our wealth through gifts to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal, we demonstrate our commitment to the Church and each other. Please go to http://annualcatholicapeal.com to make your gift today. You may also pick up envelopes and brochures in the back of church as you leave. Third Sunday of Lent March 7, 2021

What do you do professionally? Registered Nurse. 6. Besides learning about the Catholic Church what do you do for fun? Travel, spend me with family and friends and relax at my lake home in northern Wisconsin. 7. What has been the most interes ng/startling/exci ng/surprising thing you’ve learned or experienced in RCIA so far? Growing up I feared the pastor of our parish, and I always felt inferior in the church. Eventually that fear kept me from a ending mass, and comple ng the sacraments of communion and con rma on. In my return to the church, I have been pleasantly surprised by how mass today leaves me feeling upli ed and inspired by God’s love for me, instead of the fear and guilt I felt as a child. 8. If you are taking one what will your Con rma on name be? I have chosen the name Teresa as my con rma on name because Teresa was my grandmother’s name, and her faith always comforted me. She was truly a saint to me and everyone who knew her. Third Sunday of Lent March 7, 2021 fi ti ft ti fi tt ti ti ti ti ti ti fi ti

St. Vincent de Paul Parish 15 News & Notes ON TIMING, FOOTNOTES, AND RELATIONSHIPS Copyright 2021 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com Today’s Gospel text--the cleansing of the temple--is told by all four evangelists. There are differences, though, between John’s account (which we hear today) and the others. One is the timing of the event itself. Matthew and Luke put it on the day Jesus returns to Jerusalem, so, near the end. Mark puts it the next day. But John puts it near the beginning of Jesus’s ministry. In fact, it’s the next story after the wedding feast at Cana. Per the footnote in my Book re: the disparity, “The order of events in the Gospel narratives is often determined by theological motives rather than by chronological data.” Well, there you go. Another difference, though, seems more salient. Each writer speaks of the money-changers and/ or of the people selling things. But only John has the Jews asking Jesus, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Hence, only John gives us Jesus’s answer (arguably one of his best-known in Scripture): “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” This confuses the askers, prompting their response: “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But of course, as John writes, Jesus “…was speaking about the temple of his body…” And per the footnote in my Bible re: this exchange, “This episode indicates the post- resurrectional replacement of the temple by the person of Jesus.” Deep. Heavy. Wow. And if this is true, then the reading as I see it is less so about Jesus making a whip out of chords and spilling the coins of the money-changers in the temple and more so about Jesus being the person we really need to be in relationship with. In a way, I feel the same way about today’s first reading. It’s less about so many rules/ regulations/ Commandments than it is about being in relationship with their author. Decades ago, my employer sent me to western Europe to inspect food processing facilities, one of which was in northern Spain. I asked our buyer for his contact’s name and number so I could finalize the trip. When I called the plant and asked for this person, I came to learn that the man had died some period of time earlier. I expressed my condolences and hung up. Then I walked straight to my buyer’s office, told him I’d made the call, and asked “So, how often do you talk with this guy?” No relationship there… In today’s Gospel, the disciples--after seeing Jesus tear up the temple--recall a Scripture passage: “Zeal for your house will consume me” (from Psalms, but changed by John here to future tense to reflect Jesus’s now current action). OK. Zeal for a place of worship is a good thing, certainly. But--and as close as I am with certain buildings, my home parish church building included--we don’t really have relationships with buildings. We have relationships with the people inside. And per that footnote still speaking loudly to me, today’s Gospel passage “…indicates the post-resurrectional replacement of the temple by the person of Jesus.” We’re halfway through Lent. Perhaps it’s a good time to assess the zeal we apply to our relationships. And to one relationship in particular. Third Sunday of Lent March 7, 2021 )
St. Vincent de Paul Parish 16 Re ection om Fr. Murphy Zayne’s Story Depaul USA created Dax at DePaul in 2015 to provide housing, case management, counseling, transportation, food and book stipends, among other support, to students who lack permanent living arrangements. This is the story of how one student became homeless. Zayne was a senior majoring in Peace, Justice and Con lict Studies with minors in Computer Gaming and Women’s and Gender Studies. The story of my arrival at Depaul USA’s Dax House begins in 2009 when I was diagnosed with scoliosis. Before beginning junior year of high school in 2010, I had back surgery to insert a metal rod to correct my spine. I began junior year a week late, wearing a back brace. Because of depression, anxiety, and new back pain, I dropped out of school in 2011. After a period of heavy depression, I began online school and eventually graduated in the summer of 2012. Two years of inancial troubles followed. I was disabled and unable to hold even an entry-level job. My father, who was able to work, was laid off for winter. Dad was driving a dump truck when another driver caused him and the truck to roll over. It was a miracle that he survived. However, he suffered a heart attack during the accident; he missed more work. My father died on August 1, 2014, less than a month before I began community college. The little inancial stability my mother and I had vanished. We used her Social Security check to pay rent for the trailer we had lived in since I was 11. After doing well in community college, I transferred to DePaul University. After fall term, my grandmother suffered a stroke in January, 2016. Then the landlord evicted my mother and me from our trailer. I was hospitalized because of my deepening depression. Mom moved into my grandmother’s house; in October, 2016, my grandmother passed away. In early 2017, Mom found a mass in one of her breasts. Thankfully it was benign. In summer of 2017, I discovered I was ineligible for the Parent Plus loan program—because I had turned 24 years old. I left DePaul for fall term to earn money for housing. I was accepted and moved into the Dax House in January 2018. Unfortunately, the day I moved in was the last time I would see my mother; she unexpectedly passed away early on the morning of June 9, 2018. I am grateful to Depaul USA for housing and for supporting me after Mom’s passing. I would have been unable to graduate with my bachelor degree in June without their help. —Zayne People become homeless for many reasons. Rarely can they make it by themselves. Mostly homeless people need a great deal of help from the rest of us. Email me at jpmurphy@depaul.edu Third Sunday of Lent March 7, 2021 fl fr f f f
