THE NARROW DOOR BECOMES THE CLOSED DOOR In the Gospel this Sunday, we encounter the door and the doorkeeper or the master of the house. The door represents an image like the gate to heaven, the way to eternal life or the entrance to salvation. In our journey of faith, to fulfil our Christian calling is to follow the exhortation of Christ to “try our best to enter the narrow door”. Why would our Lord Jesus not offering a wide door? In fact the end of the parable in the Gospel is a kind of irony, that door will be closed. For Jesus, the door to his kingdom is open and Jesus will not leave any stone unturned to help us enter. He does not force anybody to enter, but seeks our generous response, our cooperation which demands a serious effort at times. However, our human effort is not enough to save us. Jesus said he is the door and it is through him that we are saved, but he will not Danny Hahlbohm - I Am the Way do it alone, we have to accept the invitation. This invitation keeps repeating itself throughout our life. But the moment will come when the door will be locked and we will find ourselves locked out if we keep rejecting God’s invitation. NOT ASSOCIATION, BUT PRACTICE The people will weep when they see Abraham, Jacob and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, and they themselves are left outside. They identified with these persons, but did not follow their example. Abraham left everything and was even willing to sacrifice his son to be faithful to Yahweh. Are his faith and faithfulness part of our life? Prophets preached the word of God and practised it. We may have learned much about religion, but do we practice it? Jesus says merely, “Strive to enter through the narrow door.” Is there any other door? None other is mentioned. [Reflections from: Fr Paul Foulon C.I.C.M., From Spring to Life, Sunday Gospel Reflections Cycle—C] We are too little to be able always to rise above difficulties.
