HISTORY OF EASTER
Even though Easter is our holiest of Holy Days,
when Jesus died for our sins and rose from the
dead, it actually comes from a pagan festival. All
the good ones did: Valentine’s Day, Halloween,
and Easter, which celebrates the beginning of
spring.
When is Easter? First Sunday of April? Sometimes.
Last Sunday of March? Maybe. This year, Easter is
on April 12. Last year, it was on April 21.
It’s like a holiday playing hide & seek. You have to
check the calendar every year to figure out when
to buy your Easter bonnet.
What’s the formula for figuring out the date?
That’s an easy answer. Easter always falls on the
first Sunday after the first full moon following the
spring equinox.
So the date falls anywhere between March 22 and
April 25. That’s a big spread. So it could snow on
Easter, or be sunny and bright. You just don’t
know.

There is only one Jesus, one mission, and one
resurrection. There is also only one of us. Have you ever
pondered what one solitary, humble human life can do?
Faith, not our world, tells us how special we are. We are
not robots. We are not replaceable. We have one shot.
There are no do-overs. Love is at our core and unites us
together as one with the God of love who so desperately
wants us to be with Him forever. This may not match our
secular agenda, but it ought to make our true inner
agenda leap for joy. There doesn’t need to be an end. I
can live forever. Alleluia!

Hermanos y hermanas,¡
Cristo ha resucitado! De hecho, ha resucitado! Palabras
poderosas y verdaderas, pero sin embargo sé que para
muchos pueden parecer un poco huecos. Cristo ha
resucitado, pero nuestras iglesias permanecen cerradas.
Cristo ha resucitado, pero el virus COVID-19 todavía ha
congelado nuestra sociedad. Cristo ha resucitado, pero
el mundo todavía está terriblemente roto. Este año,
gritando la Proclamación de Pascua, Exultet, algo así
como el domingo de Laetare es cada año, una orden de
regocijarnos cuando estamos tentados solo a la
desesperación, parece profundamente fuera de lugar.
Sin embargo, en un momento como este, recuerdo el
evangelio de la misa durante el día del domingo de
Pascua. En esta lectura, los textos terminan con los
santos Peter y John descubriendo la tumba vacía, y la
escritura dice: "Entonces el otro discípulo, que llegó
primero a la tumba, también entró, y vio y creyó". A
primera vista, es fácil pensar que el Evangelio termina
con los dos discípulos creyendo que Jesús realmente ha
resucitado de entre los muertos. Sin embargo, ese no es
el caso, porque la lectura realmente termina con la línea,
"porque aún no sabían la Escritura, que él debe resucitar
de entre los muertos". El Evangelio para la Pascua no
termina con un encuentro con el Señor resucitado, ni
con la creencia en Su resurrección. Y como resultado,
creo que esto puede ayudarnos en este momento.
Parte de la razón por la cual el Domingo de Pascua no
termina con un encuentro con Cristo es que la
celebración de la Pascua es una octava: durante los
próximos 8 días hasta el Domingo de la Divina
Misericordia, estamos invitados a buscar al Cristo
Resucitado y encontrarlo en una serie. de días, tal como
lo hicieron los discípulos. La liturgia, por lo tanto, nos
invita a buscar a Jesucristo, y no aferrarnos a Él de la
manera antigua como María Magdalena quería, sino
encontrarlo de nuevo. Para nosotros, en este momento
difícil, esta es una invitación importante. Debemos, por
necesidad, buscar a nuestro Dios y Salvador, eligiendo
reservar un tiempo para encontrarlo en oración, para
permitirle entrar por las puertas cerradas de nuestras
almas. Al hacerlo, también podemos preguntar cómo
podríamos buscarlo más completamente en los
sacramentos una vez que estén disponibles para
nosotros una vez más.
Cada muerte en Cristo puede conducir a una
resurrección, si estamos dispuestos a buscarlo. Cristo ha
resucitado, incluso si no podemos ver. Al igual que los
