IBPYP Update - Year 4 The Year 4 classes have been learning about forces and energy through our Unit of Inquiry into 'How the World Works'. We recently attended a science presentation and workshop on energy and forces. "I learnt that using a yo-yo is a push/pull force" - Max D "My favourite workshop was making electricity out of vinegar" - Harry T "We investigated the forces of gravity with 2 ramps and a few toy trains. The trains rolled down the ramp because of gravity then slowed down because of friction" - Marcus H "I liked how the woman dropped a match in a bottle that had gas and flammable liquid in it. It went BANG with fire. It was amazing" - Lachlan D Over the next 3 weeks, we are conducting in-class experiments such as 'Speed Racer', 'Dropping, Rolling, Throwing, Bouncing' and 'There's a Fraction too Much Friction' as workshops. Room 1 Art Exhibition - Burnside Library As part of our Unit of Inquiry ’How we express ourselves’, Room 1 has been inquiring into ‘Artistic expressions influences lives, emotions and wellbeing.’ Students have created an expressive art piece throughout the last four weeks. Our stunning masterpieces will be displayed at the Burnside Library from 29 August for five weeks. We hope that you are able to attend and appreciate our collection of outstanding artist expressions, and support our school community. Lucy & Mariana (on behalf of Room 1)
Oliphant Science Update Well done to all those who have submitted a project for judging this year. A special congratulations to Aayan K, Anneliese B, Lilijana K and Nathan A for receiving a "Highly Commended" achievement for their entries, and to Angus C, Amelia C, Siddharth P and Anas Q for receiving an award for their efforts. Angus, Amelia, Siddharth and Anas will be invited to a presentation ceremony later this year in recognition of their work, where they will receive their prize. Sensational work everyone!!! Digital Technologies/STEM Several year levels have recently been involved in a range of coding opportunities, using various programming options. Our Year 4 students are discovering Scratch and how it can be used to create an interactive digital animation, highlighting different forces. These animations are tied in with their Unit of Inquiry, How the World Works, and showcase their understandings of the Central Idea, Forces affect movement of objects. Year 6 &7 students are beginning to code using the BBC Microbit, and working together, recreated the electronic signage seen at sporting stadiums around the world. Collaboratively they wrote code to be used on each computer, turning on and off the LED lights so that the 'arrow' appeared to move from one screen to the next. Next, the students will explore future applications for their use, including its Bluetooth capabilities. ICAS Testing - Week 7 For those families who have registered for the 2020 ICAS Testing, please be aware of the upcoming dates. As the testing takes place after school, I suggest students have a healthy "brain food snack" to eat prior to sitting the test. All testing will be held in the iCentre from 3:40 pm. Students are required to bring their Chromebooks, however one will be provided for students who do not have a Chromebook. Monday 31/8: Years 3 & 4 Maths (Year 3 & 4 - 45 min) Wednesday 2/9: Years 5 - 7 Maths (Year 5 - 45 min: Year 6 & 7 - 60 min) If you have any further questions, please email michael.porter392@schools.sa.edu.au
