Freedom Eagles Check Upcoming Events Athletic Booster Club December 2020 Newsletter Let's Play!!! Winter Sports Starting Up Dear Freedom Eagles Supporter, We are excited to launch this first Freedom Eagles Athletic Booster Club newsletter of the 2020-2021 school year supporting Freedom Athletics. With fingers crossed, by the end of this month, student-athletes will be competing in basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, swimming and track. This has been made possible by the outstanding coaches and athletic department administration at FHS who have made a herculean effort to plan and prepare a safe return to competition. The FEABC is the primary financial support of FHS athletics providing funds supplementing LCPS' base funding. FEABC's support allows Freedom athletics to pay for field maintenance, extra athletic trainer support (read about Andy Lee next), game officials, new uniforms, helmet and equipment reconditioning and replacement, athletic awards, championship rings, individual team needs, senior college scholarships and capital improvements. Our major capital improvement campaign project, last year and this year, is the renovation of the FHS Strength Training Room. Phase 1 was just completed last week- see our story below! The FEABC is raising funds to pay for Phase 2, committing a total of $80,000 over the 2 years. We need your help this year! It's been a challenge for the coaches, athletes and the Booster Club, and it will continue to be challenging as we adjust throughout the year to new circumstances. Become a member, volunteer- we have several areas we need help in, attend a meeting (virtully), and support our fundraising efforts (Eagle Trot, Spring Mulch Sale, Golf tournament). We are always open to new faces and fresh ideas. Thank you for your continued support of Freedom Eagles athletics and the Booster Club. Yours in Athletics, Craig Koch, President, FEABC
JOIN Freedom Eagles Athletic Booster Club Andy Lee- Taking Care of Freedom's Athletes A longstanding icon at Freedom High School is our Athletic Trainer, Andy Lee. Andy has been at Freedom since opening day in 2005 and has been taking great care of our athletes for over 15 years. Andy graduated from VCU in 1994 with a BS in Physical Education and then received his Masters in Athletic training from Frostburg University in 1998. Prior to joining Freedom, he was the athletic trainer at MIT for 7 years. Many people wonder what the differences are between an athletic trainer and a Physical therapist; PT’s get more detailed and in depth with injuries whereas an AT’s responsibilities are more broad and based on the field. The most common injuries that Andy tends to are muscle strains and sprains. The worst injury he’s seen in his tenure is a broken femur (the athlete fully recovered and continued playing sports). The most challenging season for an Athletic Trainer is Spring due to the sheer number of sports going on, games are daily; the most “relaxed” season is Winter because everything is inside; and the most injuries occur in Football (no surprise there!!). Mr. Lee has approximately 800 athletes per year; around 300 in the Fall, 250 in Winter and around 300 in the Spring. The onset of Covid has brought about new challenges for Andy with monitoring the mitigation process amongst our teams and attending numerous meetings. The safety of our athletes is always on the forefront of his mind and he is very cautious in making sure Freedom follows and adheres to all of the Covid guidelines. When asked what advice he would give to athletes to prepare for their season, he advised to start slow and build with weight training and being as active as possible. Thank you Andy for all you do!! Strength Training Room Receives New Equipment Last week, the FHS Athletics department staff received the first round of new strength training equipment in the 1st phase of the project to renovate the Strength Training Room. Next up is a repainting of the room and rearrangement of the equipment to support a better workflow. The FEABC has donated $40,000 this year for this project and is on track to match that amount by the end of the school year. Phase 2 of the project involves new flooring and additional equipment. Your membership and fundraising support has allowed us to make a difference for all the students and staff at Freedom High School.
