What we are still waiting for Two Main Documents: 1. Subject by Subject guidelines We are also waiting for: • New dates for coursework • Guidance on orals • Portal details for students
Leaving Certificate 2021: Choices In summary, Leaving Certificate 2021 results will be awarded on the basis of the better of either Students’ performance in Leaving Certificate examinations in any subject taken by them, including, where appropriate, their performance in the completion of additional components (coursework, orals, etc.) or SEC Accredited Grades awarded to students in each subject based on schools’ estimates of students’ likely performance in the 2021 examination and a national standardisation process. Guidelines p.3 Registration is done subject by subject Students should register for both options Portal will possibly be open from March 10th to March 16th, TBC
What is an SEC Accredited Grade? Combination of school information 1. A student’s expected performance in an examination 2. National data available in relation to the performance of students in examinations over a period of time. 3. The combination of these data sets through a process of national standardisation will determine the grade – SEC Accredited Grade • No historical school data/profiling • No ranking
There will be four main school-based steps: 1. The teacher’s estimation of student percentage marks 2. School alignment of marks for a subject through a subject alignment group comprising teachers who are teaching the subject to Leaving Certificate students this year 3. Oversight of the alignment process by the SMT 4. Transmission of the marks for national standardisation. (From 03rd June) ASSESSMENT P13-16

Coursework: What Happens if Certain Aspects Cannot Take Place? If not possible to hold the practical, the proportion of those marks is awarded elsewhere in the coursework eg. PE performance assessment/Construction Studies and Engineering day practicals Music: Group singing performance : discussions are ongoing on this matter Marks will be re-allocated within the coursework, not re-allocated to the exam Public health advice trumps all coursework Everything is still subject to change
Coursework: to do or not to do……? If a student is not following the written LC option in June, the coursework does not count for any other aspect of the written assessment. Mindful of continuity of learning and change of mind option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If a student is following the written LC , they must/should do the coursework, otherwise they will lose the grade/marks for the coursework in their entirety Remember students could change their mind in May when portal reopens. If orals are missed this will result in lost marks. No resit in November as we had in 2020
Orals/Coursework at/after Easter • Guidelines coming from SEC (we are still awaiting clarity) • Will take place in the school • Dates for coursework will be amended • Teacher, or another teacher in the school (proficiency), or a teacher in another school, or a retired teacher. • Record the oral on SEC device (to be clarified) • School sends the recording to SEC • SEC arranges the marking of the oral All students should sit an oral
In Class Assessment Tests If administering an in-class teacher-designed test, the test should be : • No more than one lesson in duration (maximum one hour, 30 to 40 min is fine) • A maximum of three class tests may be administered up to 14 May 2021. • Students and teachers now have timetables, also available on our website. • Examples of tests that may be administered are written, oral, aural or practical tests. Mock examinations (i.e. examinations involving full class groups sitting written examinations under conditions that mirror those of the certificate examinations) are neither required nor recommended for use as evidence for the Accredited Grades process.

Canvasing • Canvassing? Not permitted under any circumstances: students are in the building this year. • Teachers are already advised of this. • In an extreme scenario the SEC can withhold results. • Student should not ask teachers about results either in class or online.
Appeals Students will be allowed to appeal their conventional Leaving Certificate Examination Grades in the normal way. In relation to SEC Accredited Grades, the appeal will consist of a process review focused on identifying possible errors in the transmission and processing of student data. The first step in an appeal will be the appeal of the higher grade awarded – be that the Leaving Certificate grade or the SEC Accredited grade . There is no appeal of the grade entered for the Accredited Grade, only the process.
