WHAT IS NCEA? • National Certificate in Educational Achievement • NZ secondary qualification – Y11 to Y13 students • Overseen by NZQA (New Zealand Qualifications Authority) • Unique because: • Standards based • Flexible • Allows for different styles of assessment

ENDORSEMENT Certificate endorsement Subject endorsement • Indicates high performance • Indicated high across a level with either performance in a subject in excellence or merit one year • 50+ cr at Excellence or 50+ • 14+ cr at Excellence or 14+ cr at Merit cr at Merit • Must include 3 cr of both internal and external

BASE REQUIREMENT TO PASS LEVEL 1 Literacy Numeracy minimum of 10 literacy credits minimum of 10 numeracy credits Numeracy credits reflect their Literacy credits reflect a student's number, measurement and writing, speaking and listening skills statistical aptitude Literacy and numeracy credits can be attained from a range of different subjects not just English and Mathematics
UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 3 14 cr each in three approved L3 subjects UE 10 literacy cr at L2 or above 10 numeracy cr at L1 or (5 reading & 5 writing) above
NZQA SCHOLARSHIP • Separate to L1, 2 & 3 NCEA • Premier academic award for New Zealand secondary school students • Assessed with a nationally set & marked exam in Nov/Dec • Study for scholarship subjects is frequently supported by additional tutorials • Separate fees

KEEPING ON TRACK Checkpoints • Steps towards completing a standard • Do not require a missed assessment application • Could be a test, completing an activity, submitting a draft, etc. Results • Parent/student information portal to results information – checkpoints, internals, etc.
ABSENT FOR AN INTERNAL ASSESSMENT? • Students with a valid reason for absence should complete a missed assessment application • Information in the student NZQA notebook • Contact Year Level Dean or Principal's Nominee if help needed
EXAMS School exams • 13 to 20 September 2019 • Practice for external exams • Grades can be used for externals if a derived grade is needed • Workshops for internal assessments also take place during this time NZQA exams • 8 November to 3 December 2019 • Assessment of external achievement standards • Only opportunity to sit these standards each year
DERIVED GRADES • Application made to Principal’s Nominee before 4 December 2019 • Used if a student is unable to sit an external exam or may have impaired performance • Temporary illness or injury • Trauma (deeply distressing event) • Other serious event that is beyond their control • Student will need to have passed the formative (school) exam in that standard to apply
NZQA/NCEA INFORMATION HANDOUT • Students will receive a copy as part of their Atawhai session next week • NCEA & Scholarship fees are due each year • Collected by LBC on behalf of NZQA until 6 September 2019 • Financial assistance available from NZQA • Help to sit assessments – Special Assessment Conditions • Applied for in advance • Must be approved by NZQA • Results available on NZQA website via learner login • Internal assessments throughout the year • External assessments from mid January 2020 • Scholarship from mid February 2020
TIME MANAGEMENT • NCEA assessment is continuous • Students need your help to master managing their time • Use assessment statements/information from teachers/exam timetable • Year wall planner to record checkpoints & assessment dates • Remind your student!
PLEASE ASK . . . • Your student knows more than they think – ask to see the information about their dates, etc. • Email teachers, deans, careers advisor, etc. if you are unsure
