Tena Koutou Katoa Friday 13 May 2022 — Issue 13 Selwyn Students Experience Superb New Outdoor Education Opportunities Year 11 SURF CAMP On May 1st, 70 of our Year 11 Health and Physical Education students went to camp at Mangawhai Heads as a part of our Safety Management Selwise assessment. With great weather for the 3 days, the students participated in a range of exhilarating water-based activities including surfing, paddle boarding and kayaking. Back on land, the activities were equally exciting - a Burma trail, team building exercises and an amazing race. The students were able to work in groups, collaborate and communicate effectively and could demonstrate their responsible behaviours in an outdoor setting. On the Monday, a large group of students from our Totara Learning Centre also visited for the day. They declared it one of their best days ever at school! Altogether then, the camp a wonderful success. What a great way to start Term 2! Year 12 OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMP At the end of last term, our Level 2 Outdoor Education class had the opportunity to try some exciting new activities in the surroundings of the beautiful Tawharanui Regional Park. Over two days, the class had surf lessons, did stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking at Omana and participated in Adventure Based Learning tasks on Tawharanui beach. The whole purpose of the camp was to experience “group development”, working together to answer tasks and participate in challenges. Building up to the camp, the students planned their menus. Then during the camp, they had to fend for themselves, cooking their own dinner and making breakfast. Lots of fun was had and everyone wished that it could have been longer. One of the students described it as, ‘a trip of memories’.
