Middle School Summer Packet Summary 2020-2021 ELA Assignment Read the book assigned to your grade. Complete the summary assignment. ● 6th Grade - The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis ● 7th Grade - Crispin-The Cross of Lead by Avi ● 8th Grade - The Pigman by Paul Zindel ELA/Science Assignment Read one of the science books and complete the assignment. There is an ELA and science component and the assignment will count for both classes. ● Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly (regular edition or young readers edition) ● The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba & Bryan Mealer ● The Martian by Andy Weir (make sure to get the Classroom Edition) ● Hoot by Carl Hiaasen Math Assignment Complete summer math packet for your grade. It is recommended that you complete 2-3 pages per week. SS/Religion Assignment ● 6th Grade - Create a poster on a country you have chosen. ● 7th Grade - The Fighting Ground by Avi. Read the book and complete the assignment. ● 8th Grade - The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. Read the book and complete the assignment. Study Island Summer Assignment It is important to practice math and language arts skills over the summer to help prepare for the next grade. Each student will be required to complete an assignment in math and language arts each week in Study Island. Each week an assignment will appear that should take approximately 30 minutes. You can do it in one session or multiple sessions. You must attain a 70% to be considered proficient. Scores on assignments will be averaged for a quiz grade. Dear 8th Grader: The following is the summer Religion assignment for those entering 8th grade. It will count as a grade for Religion for the 1st Trimester. You are to read the book, The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. The Project is as followed: Read the book and take note on the main character Eddie and the 5 people he meets in heaven. Reflect on how each person is important in Eddie’s life, what he/she teaches him about life and how they all relate to him and one another. You are to make a poster for the novel. The poster should include each character: Eddie + the 5 others. You are to write a summary on who each person is, how Eddie knows him/her, why they are important to the story and what he/she teaches Eddie about life. Each person should be summarized in (5-7 sentences) You are to draw what you imagine each character looks like. Make sure your poster has the title, name of author and your name and grade should be on the front. Get Creative, be sure to proofread your writing since spelling and grammar will count. EIGHTH GRADE SUMMER READING This summer students entering the eighth grade in September will need to read two books for Literature class. Please read and follow the directions carefully. Book 1: The Pigman by Paul Zindel Students are required to type a two page summary of the book using Times New Roman font, size 12, and double spaced. This summary is due on the first full day of school. We will discuss the book that week and there will be a test at the end of the week. Please take some notes or highlight your novel to keep facts fresh in your memory. The summary will count toward your test grade. Book 2: Science related book from list below Upon completion of the book the following project should be done. Create a new book jacket for the novel which includes the following: ● Front cover-draw and color an illustration for the book. Be sure to include your name on the cover. ● Inside front flap-write a one paragraph description of each of the main characters. ● Inside back flap-write a description of the setting and a two paragraph summary of the story. ● Inside cover - construct an illustrated timeline of at least 10 important events in the book. Describe each event and draw and color an illustration for each. Please be sure all events are in chronological order ● Back cover- write a 2 paragraph description of the science content in the book. Be sure your book jacket is neat and colorful. Be prepared to give an oral presentation of your project. Summer Math Packet 2020 7th to 8th In this packet there are directions, notes, and examples for each topic. Please review them and try your best. Some topics are review, some are practice, and some are new (to challenge you and give you a preview of 8th grade). Please try to space out your work over the summer. Two to three pages a week works well. Write your work out clearly for each problem. A quiz will be given the first week of school from selected problems in the packet.
