Domain: Number System

Standard: 6.NS.1 -6.NS.3: Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication
and division to divide fractions by fractions.

Directions:

1. Complete the problem below.

                                                  3 1
Chef Emerald had a recipe that called for lb onions and 1 lbs of pork. He was
                                                  4 3
preparing the recipe for a special event and needed to quadruple it to make enough
for all of his guests. How many pounds of onions and pounds of pork would he
need for the recipe?

Show all work.

Onions: ¾ x 4= 12/4=3 lb. onions
Pork: 1 ⅓ = 4/3 4/3 x 4/1 = 16/3 16 ÷ 3 = 5 ⅓ lb. pork

2. Create a problem about the estimated cost of ingredients for the large event recipe
in onions cost $2.99/lb and pork costs $5.49/lb. Include both an estimated solution and
an exact solution to see that your estimation is reasonable.
Estimated costs:
Onions: ~$3.00 x 3 = about $9.00
Pork: ~ $5.50 x 5 = about $27.50

Actual costs:
Onions: $2.99 x 3 = $8.97
Pork: $5.49 x $5.33 = $29.26

                                                                                          4

1. Omar said that it is impossible to raise a base number to the power of 2 and get a value less
   than the base.

   Part A
   Do you agree with Omar?
                                                                  Agree Disagree

   Part B
Justify your reasoning in the space below.

2. Serena is playing a video game in which she captures butterflies. There are 2 butterflies on the
screen at the start of the game, and the number of butterflies doubles every minute. After four
minutes of playing the game, Serena had captured seven of the butterflies so they are taken
   off the screen.

Write an expression that includes a power that represents the number of butterflies on the
screen at that time. Write your expression and justify why it is correct in the box below. Then
   evaluate your expression.

There are 25 – 7 butterflies on the screen after 4 minutes. At the start of the game, there are 2
           butterflies on screen (21 ); after 1 minute, there are 4 (22 ); after 2 minutes, there are 8 (23 );
           after 3 minutes, there are 16 (24 ); after 4 minutes, there are 32 (25 ). To evaluate my
           expression, (25 ) = 32 and 32 – 7 = 25, so there are 25 butterflies on the screen.

                                                                                                                 7
