Cooking Up Culture In this course, students will explore the culture of food both in Denver and around the world! Each week, you will dive into the history, production, and enjoyment of food through a variety of lectures, activities, and cooking demonstrations. Grow your understanding of where food comes from, how to make it, and of course enjoy trying lots of new dishes! Students will demonstrate their knowledge by developing a menu, cooking a dish and inviting friends and community members for a shared feast. The cost of experiential activities, including entrance fees and transportation to and from campus included. Visual Discoveries In this English language course, you will explore U.S culture through the lens of your smartphone. During the course, you will visit special sites around the Denver area as you learn more about the history and culture of one of the top-ranked cities in the country. You will capture striking images that tell a story while also writing short narratives to accompany your images. Your final project will conclude with a digital portfolio that shows not only your artistic eye, but also what you have learned. This course will help improve your writing and increase your English language competency. Real World Communication In this course, you will learn to communicate clearly and effectively in English through the use of authentic digital communication sources, such as magazines, blogs, and podcasts. You will analyze, review, and practice advanced grammar structures, as well as a variety of vocabulary, through engaging individual and group activities integrating writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. The course culminates in a student- created online blog showcasing your abilities to use language authentically. For the 2021 year, this class will be offered in a hyflex model. This means you can choose to attend in-person or online. You can also change how you attend week - to - week. Online classes will be synchronous so that you will have the opportunity to interact with your classmates and teacher. Strategies for Success This course focuses on goal setting, planning, and preparation for what you want to do after you finish your time as an Au Pair. In a small group setting, you will be guided by your instructor as you explore your future options, make a plan, and set steps into motion. This can include applying to university, preparing a resume, looking for a job, and more! At the end of the course, you will demonstrate what you have learned with a special project that you can take with you as you prepare for your next adventure. Denver Weekend Experience: The Art Scene In this weekend-long au pair course, you will be fully immersed in Denver’s art scene through visits to the city’s famous art museums, art districts, concert venues, and theaters. Knowledgeable instructors will be your guide in your exploration of Denver’s creative culture, tailoring the experience to your individual interests. You will put your English language skills to work in your interactions with classmates, instructors, and museum docents. English will also be used to describe and share opinions on art both orally and in writing. Throughout the weekend, instructors will provide you with targeted feedback to help you improve the accuracy of your use of the English language. Join us for an unforgettable weekend in Denver!
