Second Sunday of Advent - December 6, 2020
A voice cries out: “In the desert prepare the way of the Lord!”
As with last week, when the Lord reminded us to be watchful and alert for the second coming of the Lord, this
week’s readings give us another clarion call: “Prepare the way for the Lord!” This season is a time of preparation
and confident expectation, when the Church on earth, the Church Militant, having spent a time praying with
greater fervor for the Church Suffering (the Church in purgatory), now turns its hope to the time when it will
be united with the Church Triumphant in heaven. As we celebrated the glorious feast of Christ the King two
weeks ago, and the first Sunday of the Advent season last week, this week we note a subtle shift in the lections:
“prepare,” “wait,” and—perhaps surprisingly, “comfort.” The first reading today recalls the hope we are afforded
by our God, who is so merciful to us even in our sin: “Comfort, give comfort to my people,” tell Jerusalem that
her subservience to sin is at an end, for her Lord comes with mercy and forgiveness. In this time of Advent
preparation for the celebration of the Lord’s first coming at the Incarnation, let us continue to prepare ourselves
with acts of penance, with great hope in the abundant mercy of our God.
The music this week echoes the readings: the hymn Comfort, Comfort Ye, My People is a joyous tune and text, and
recalls the expectant hope with which we wait on the return of the Lord. The hymn Savior of the Nations, Come!
is an 1851 translation of the original German hymn Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (Come now, Savior of the
Nations), which is itself a translation of the original Latin hymn Veni, Redemptor gentium (come, Redeemer of
the nations). You have heard this chant hymn sung during the broadcast Mass and before Mass in the Masses in
the piazza. The melody is probably familiar to many, better known with the English text Where Charity and Love
Prevail. This Latin hymn was composed by St. Ambrose, Archbishop of Milan (340 – 397). Its original use is for
the octave before Christmas, but I have chosen to sing it throughout Advent to help familiarize parishioners with
this most characteristic of Advent hymns. In future years, we will sing it in both English and Latin.
This week we have very important feast days for our community. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
(December 8) is the patronal feast of the United States of America. On December 9, we celebrate the feast St. Juan
Diego, the herald of the Empress of the Americas, whose feast we celebrate on Saturday, December 12, Nuestra
Señora de Guadalupe, Our Lady of Guadalupe. Let us pray for the most puissant intercession of the Blessed
Virgin, the Theotokos (Bearer of God) under her titles the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Let us pray especially for all of our peoples here in the Americas, who have a most powerful intercessor.

SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION: Our national feast day occurs on December 8th each year, which is this coming Tuesday so our Feast Day Masses will begin on Monday evening, Dec. 7th and then on the day itself. While, this Holy Day is always a holy day of obligation like all Sundays, this year we do have a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass for those who are elderly or in vulnerable health. Monday Vigil Masses will be at 5:30 p.m. in English and 7:00 p.m. in Spanish. Then on Tuesday, the Masses will be at 8:15 a.m. in English, 10:00 a.m. livestream Mass in English for the Parish School (although everyone is invited) and then at 5:30 p.m. in English and 7:00 pm. Spanish. Due to the Mass there will be no Holy Hour that night but there will be Confessions as usual. FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE: This feast day falls on December 12th and it is preceded by a Triduum which will begin on Wednesday, December 9th and continue for the 3 days until the 12th. Each evening there will be Mass followed by a Holy Hour which includes the Guadalupe Rosary and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. That will happen Dec. 9 to 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. On the feast itself, December 12th, the traditional mañanitas will take place at 6:00am with Mass following in Spanish at 6:30 a.m. This is later than usual since there is a curfew. English Mass will then be at 8:15a.m. as usual. In the evening we will have the Sunday Vigil Masses online at 4:00 p.m. in Spanish and 5:15 p.m. in English but then another Feast Day Mass in Spanish at 7:00 p.m. Confessions will be heard at 7:00 p.m. as usual. THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION: Last week as we began the new liturgical year, we reviewed the procedures for the reception of Holy Communion. The insert is included in last week's bulletin which is available online for our parishioners were away for the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Please read it over carefully. ‘REAL’ CHRISTMAS CARDS: So often these days the beautiful feast of Christmas has been secularized and reduced to another occasion to “buy stuff.” We as Christians should be faithful to the true meaning of Christmas which is the celebration of Our Lord’s birth. To this end, I encourage you to send out “real” Christmas cards: meaning those that actually depict the Holy Family or the Madonna and Child rather than just flowers and snow. It is also helpful to use the special “Madonna and Child” stamps which the U.S. Postal Service has available each Christmas. Once again, this year our parish has available beautiful Christmas cards which depict the Nativity scene as found in the baptistery of the church. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to send meaningful Christmas cards as well as showcase the beauty of our church. They are available for purchase in the church gift shop which is set up outside the church during Sunday Masses.
ADVENT CONFESSIONS: Due to the restrictions imposed upon us, we are not able to have our usual Advent Penance Service which lots of priests and everybody attending. Instead, we will offer Confessions 3 times daily in the days leading up to Christmas. The full schedule will be provided in the bulletin. THE MOTIVE OF OUR GIVING: Concluding our Stewardship reflection: A. We Should Give Thankfully - That is, we ought to do our giving in light of what the Lord has done for us. When we consider the fact that the Lord loved us and gave His life for us, then saved us by His grace when we simply asked, then the tithe seems awfully small. A thankful heart is a giving heart! B. We Should Give Cheerfully - According to the Bible, God loves a cheerful giver, 2 Cor. 9:7. This word literally means, "hilarious." We should give, not because we feel obligated to give, but because it delights our hearts to be able to give unto the Lord! C. We Should Give Liberally - This simply means that we are not to be stingy when it comes to giving to the Lord's work or His people. In truth, we can expect God to bless us in direct proportion to the level of our giving, Luke 6:38; 2 Cor. 9:6. Do not be guilty of being a skinflint when it comes to giving. The Lord will not bless your life! This is the only kind of liberal the Lord will use and bless! D. We Should Give Sacrificially - In the gospel, Jesus was impressed, not by the amount of the widow's gift, but by the fact that she gave out of her need. The rich gave out of their surplus, she gave all she had. That got the Lord's attention! It still does! If you wait to start giving when you have plenty, you will face 2 problems. 1.) You'll never get to where you think you have plenty. 2.) When you do have extra, it will seem like too much to give. The best thing to do is to give everything you have to the Lord. When He already owns it all, then that little 10% will not matter too much. Conclusion: When we come to the topic of money, there are always those who get a little touchy. Some people simply are not going to honor the Lord with their giving until they get right with God. Some will say, "Father, it's not about the money." In truth, that is what it is almost always about! Anyone who refuses to give the Lord what belongs to Him loves his money more that he loves God. What is God's word about your money? That your money belongs to Him and that you will give an account as to how you use His money. This is why tithing is so important. It puts things in proper perspective. Sincerely in Christ and St. Andrew, Father Gonzalez ANNUAL PROCESSION AND MASS IN HONOR OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE TO BE CELEBRATED VIRTUALLY: The historic annual Procession and Mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be celebrated virtually on Sunday, December 6 at 11 a.m. via livestream so that families can honor “La Morenita” safely from home amid increased COVID-19-related public safety measures. The annual celebration, themed “Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of Healing and Hope,” is the oldest religious procession in Los Angeles. The theme reflects on the importance of the presence of our Blessed Mother in our lives, especially during these challenging times. The livestream, beginning at 11 a.m., will be available on lacatholics.org/guadalupe and facebook.com/lacatholics from the Mission San Gabriel and will include the arrival of the car procession and Holy Mass dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. All are encouraged to share images and videos on social media of their at-home celebrations dedicated to Our Lady using hashtag #GuadalupeLA. The Mass will be rebroadcasted on KTLA-5 on December 12 as part of a special about the annual celebration which typically takes place in East Los Angeles. “During this time of pandemic, in which people are suffering physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially, our Blessed Mother continues to visit her children, bringing them God’s healing mercy and His message of hope,” said Archbishop Gomez in a letter inviting parish communities to join him virtually for the procession and Mass, established in 1931 by Mexican Catholics who fled persecution by the Mexican government during the Cristero War. In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, approximately 40,000 gather each year for the annual procession and Mass in her honor and thousands more celebrate at the Cathedral and other local parish celebrations.

Al igual que la semana pasada, cuando el Señor nos recordó que debemos estar atentos y alertas a la segunda
venida del Señor, las lecturas de esta semana nos dan otro llamado de atención: "¡Preparen el camino para el
Señor!" Esta temporada es un tiempo de preparación y expectación confiada, cuando la Iglesia en la tierra,
la Iglesia militante, después de haber pasado un tiempo orando con mayor fervor por la Iglesia Sufrimiento
(la Iglesia en el purgatorio), ahora vuelve su esperanza al tiempo únete a la Iglesia Triunfante en el cielo.
Mientras celebramos la gloriosa fiesta de Cristo Rey hace dos semanas, y el primer domingo de la temporada de

Redemptor gentium (en español, Redentor de las naciones, ¡ven!). Usted ha escuchado este himno cantado durante
la transmisión de la Misa. La melodía posiblemente sea familiar; puede haber sido escuchado como la melodía
del canto inglés Donde prevalecen la caridad y el amor (Donde hay caridad y amor). Este himno latino fue
compuesto por San Ambrosio, arzobispo de Milán (340 - 397). Su uso original es para la octava antes de Navidad,
pero he elegido cantarlo durante el Adviento para ayudar a familiarizar a los feligreses con este himno tan

y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Oremos especialmente por todos nuestros pueblos aquí en las Américas, que
tienen un intercesor muy poderoso.

celebración en automóvil.
En lugar de flores, una
donación monetaria es
bienvenida para nuestra
iglesia. Tendremos hora de
5 am. a las 8 am, y de 5:30 a
8:30 pm.
¡Todos son bienvenidos!SOLEMNIDAD DE LA INMACULADA CONCEPCIÓN: Nuestra fiesta nacional ocurre el 8 de diciembre cada año, que es el próximo martes, por lo que nuestras Misas de fiesta comenzarán el lunes 7 de diciembre por la noche y luego el mismo día. Si bien, este Día Santo es siempre un día de obligación como todos los domingos, este año tenemos una dispensa de la obligación de asistir a Misa para aquellos que son ancianos o con una salud vulnerable. Las Misas de la vigilia del lunes serán a las 5:30 p.m. en inglés y 7:00 p.m. en español. Luego, el martes, las Misas serán a las 8:15 a.m. en inglés, a las 10:00 a.m. Misa por internet en inglés para la escuela parroquial (aunque todos están invitados) y luego a las 5:30 p.m. en inglés y 7:00 p.m. en español. Debido a la Misa, no habrá Hora Santa esa noche, pero si habrá confesiones como de costumbre. FIESTA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE: Esta fiesta cae el 12 de diciembre y está precedida por un Triduo que comenzará el miércoles 9 de diciembre y continuará durante los 3 días hasta el 12. Cada noche habrá Misa seguida de una Hora Santa que incluye el Rosario Guadalupano y la Bendición del Santísimo Sacramento. Eso sucederá del 9 al 11 de diciembre a partir de las 6:30 p.m. En la fiesta, el 12 de diciembre, las mañanitas tradicionales se llevarán a cabo a las 6:00 a.m. y la Misa en español seguirá a las 6:30 a.m. Esto es más tarde de lo habitual ya que hay toque de queda. La Misa en inglés será a las 8:15 a.m. como siempre. Por la noche tendremos las Misas de la vigilia dominical en línea a las 4:00 p.m. en español y 5:15 p.m. en inglés, pero luego otra Misa de la fiesta en español a las 7:00 p.m. Las confesiones se escucharán a las 7:00 p.m. como siempre. LA RECEPCIÓN DE LA SANTA COMUNIÓN: La semana pasada, cuando comenzamos el nuevo año litúrgico, revisamos los procedimientos para la recepción de la Sagrada Comunión. El inserto está incluido en el boletín de la semana pasada que está disponible en línea para nuestros feligreses que estuvieron fuera por el feriado del Día de Acción de Gracias. Por favor, léalo detenidamente. TARJETAS DE NAVIDAD "VERDADERAS": Muy a menudo en estos días la hermosa fiesta de Navidad se ha secularizado y se ha reducido a otra ocasión para "comprar cosas". Los cristianos debemos ser fieles al verdadero significado de la Navidad, que es la celebración del nacimiento de Nuestro Señor. Con este fin, les animo a enviar tarjetas de Navidad "verdaderas", es decir, aquellas que realmente representan a la Sagrada Familia o la Virgen y el Niño en lugar de solo flores y nieve. También es útil utilizar los sellos especiales "Madonna y Niño" que el Servicio Postal de los Estados Unidos tiene disponibles cada Navidad. Una vez más, este año nuestra parroquia tiene disponibles hermosas tarjetas navideñas que representan la escena de Navidad que se encuentra en el baptisterio de la iglesia. Esta es una oportunidad maravillosa para que envíe tarjetas de Navidad significativas y muestre la belleza de nuestra iglesia. Están disponibles para su compra en la tienda de regalos de la iglesia que se instala fuera de la iglesia durante las Misas dominicales.
CONFESIONES DE ADVIENTO: Debido a las restricciones que se nos imponen, no podemos tener nuestro habitual Servicio de Penitencia de Adviento al que asisten muchos sacerdotes y todos. En cambio, ofreceremos Confesiones 3 veces al día en los días previos a la Navidad. El calendario completo se proporcionará en el boletín. EL MOTIVO DE NUESTRA DAR: Concluyendo nuestra reflexión sobre la corresponsabilidad: A. Debemos dar con gratitud - Es decir, debemos dar a la luz de lo que el Señor ha hecho por nosotros. Cuando consideramos el hecho de que el Señor nos amó y dio Su vida por nosotros, luego nos salvó por Su gracia cuando simplemente le pedimos, entonces el diezmo parece terriblemente pequeño. ¡Un corazón agradecido es un corazón generoso! B. Debemos dar con alegría - Según la Biblia, Dios ama al dador alegre, 2 Cor. 9: 7. Esta palabra significa literalmente "divertidísima". ¡Debemos dar, no porque nos sintamos obligados a dar, sino porque deleita nuestro corazón poder dar al Señor! C. Debemos dar generosamente - Esto simplemente significa que no debemos ser tacaños cuando se trata de dar a la obra del Señor o Su pueblo. En verdad, podemos esperar que Dios nos bendiga en proporción directa al nivel de nuestra ofrenda, Lucas 6:38; 2 Cor. 9: 6. No seas culpable de ser un tacaño cuando se trata de dar. ¡El Señor no bendecirá tu vida! ¡Este es el único tipo de liberal que el Señor usará y bendecirá! D. Debemos dar sacrificadamente - En el evangelio, Jesús quedó impresionado, no por la cantidad del regalo de la viuda, sino por el hecho de que ella dio por necesidad. Los ricos dieron de su excedente, ella dio todo lo que tenía. ¡Eso llamó la atención del Señor! ¡Todavía lo hace! Si espera para comenzar a dar cuando tiene suficiente, se enfrentará a 2 problemas. 1.) Nunca llegarás a donde crees que tienes suficiente. 2.) Cuando tenga más, parecerá demasiado para dar. Lo mejor que puedes hacer es darle todo lo que tienes al Señor. Cuando ya sea dueño de todo, ese pequeño 10% no importará demasiado. Conclusión: Cuando llegamos al tema del dinero, siempre hay quienes se ponen un poco quisquillosos. Algunas personas simplemente no van a honrar al Señor con sus ofrendas hasta que estén bien con Dios. Algunos dirán: "Padre, no se trata del dinero". En verdad, ¡de eso se trata casi siempre! Cualquiera que se niegue a darle al Señor lo que le pertenece, ama más su dinero que a Dios. ¿Cuál es la palabra de Dios sobre su dinero? Que su dinero le pertenece a Él y que dará cuenta de cómo usa Su dinero. Por eso el diezmo es tan importante. Pone las cosas en la perspectiva adecuada. Sinceramente en Cristo y San Andrés, Padre González PROCESIÓN Y MISA ANUAL EN HONOR A NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE A CELEBRARSE EN FORMA VIRTUAL: La histórica Procesión y Misa anual en honor a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se celebrará virtualmente el domingo 6 de diciembre a las 11 a.m. a través de una transmisión en vivo para que las familias puedan honrar a “La Morenita” de manera segura desde casa debido a mayores medidas de seguridad pública relacionadas con el COVID-19. La celebración anual, cuyo tema este año es “Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe: Madre de Sanación y Esperanza”, es la procesión religiosa más antigua de Los Ángeles. El tema reflexiona sobre la importancia de la presencia de nuestra Santísima Madre en nuestras vidas, especialmente durante estos tiempos desafiantes. La transmisión en vivo, a partir de las 11 a.m., estará disponible en lacatholics.org/guadalupe y en facebook.com/lacatholics desde la Misión San Gabriel e incluirá la llegada de la procesión en automóvil y la Santa Misa dedicada a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Se anima a todos a compartir imágenes y videos en las redes sociales de sus celebraciones en casa dedicadas a Nuestra Señora usando el hashtag #GuadalupeLA. La Santa Misa será retransmitida por KTLA-5 el 12 de diciembre como programa especial sobre la celebración que regularmente se lleva a cabo en el Este de Los Angeles. “Durante este tiempo de pandemia, en el que la gente está sufriendo física, emocional, espiritual y económicamente, nuestra Santísima Madre continúa visitando a sus hijos, llevándoles la misericordia sanadora de Dios y su mensaje de esperanza”, dijo el Arzobispo Gomez en una carta invitando a las comunidades parroquiales para unirse a él virtualmente en la procesión y en la Misa, establecida en 1931 por católicos mexicanos que huyeron de la persecución del gobierno mexicano durante la Guerra Cristera. En la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, aproximadamente 40,000 personas se reúnen cada año para la procesión anual y la Misa en honor a la Virgen y miles más celebran en la Catedral y en otras parroquias locales.
