A Message from Fr. Matt … Dear Brothers and Sisters, The other day I was talking to my sister in her kitchen about something kind of serious, for adults anyway. My niece came in and said, “Uncle Matt, did you hear?” I wasn’t sure what she was talking about. Did something bad happen? Something good? Did she decide which school she is attending? So I told her that I don’t think I had heard. She then very excitedly told me about what had happened at the Grammy Awards the night before! Harry Styles wore three different outfits. The first and the third were “fire,” that means good. The second outfit was a little “sketch,” that means bad. She told me a bunch of things about Taylor Swift and other Grammy winners. She loves music and was excited to share, so I was excited to listen. When she was done, my sister and I laughed and continued our serious conversation. When I read the Gospel for this week I thought that Andrew and Phillip probably felt similarly. They come to Jesus and say, “Hey Jesus, there are some Greek guys who want to speak with you.” Jesus doesn’t say, “Ok, one second,” or “Sure, bring them over.” He launches into this very powerful talk about the Son of Man being glorified and glorifying the Father and grains of wheat dying and him being lifted up and drawing everyone to Himself. Now is the time for this to happen, Jesus says. If I were Philip or Andrew, I probably would have said, “Wow, this is intense. I guess that’s a ‘no’ then to meeting with these Greek guys?!” I mean, that wasn’t really an answer to their question. Or was it? Saint John Paul II often talked about Jesus as the answer. He said: “Only in Christ can men and women find answers to the ultimate questions that trouble them...It is Jesus you seek when you dream of happiness...it is he who provokes you with that thirst that will not let you settle...it is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives.” Jesus is the answer to the questions of our hearts. Only Jesus. His answer to Philip and Andrew is stating that what He is going to do in the days to come will be the answer to everything. It is the answer because Jesus will embody unselfish love. He will take on all of our crosses so that we will never have to carry ours alone. He will take on all of our sins so that we can have hope when we feel trapped in them. He will give a way to purify our hearts through Him. We can rediscover the clean heart that God has placed in us, as the Psalm says, and find again God’s Law written on our hearts as Jeremiah prophesied in the First Reading. Jesus will do this because of His love for you. Jesus is the answer to every question. So how is Jesus the answer to my niece’s question about if I had heard about the Grammys? If I had started talking about Jesus, she would have felt like maybe I didn’t care much about her excitement. It is not talking about Jesus that you and I are called to, although sometimes it is; rather we are to show Jesus to the questioner. We can do that by showing that you care, that you are interested. By being more about the other person than you are about your own agenda. This is how you answer with Jesus. Like those Greeks in the Gospel, people today are desperate to see Jesus, many times without knowing it. The Lord is calling on us, in these last days of Lent, to show people Jesus. Let Him be the Answer. He is really good at it. Be hopeful. Smile at others like the goodness written deep down in your heart recognizes the goodness written deep down in theirs. Be more interested in the other person. Show them that they matter and so does what interests them. Show them Jesus. He is the answer. Make this your goal in every conversation and encounter this week. Peace and Love, Fr. Matt

CONSECRATION TO ST. JOSEPH In keeping with Pope Francis’ proclamation of The Year of St. Joseph, we are offering an opportunity to participate in a consecration to him. What does it mean to conse- crate yourself to St .Joseph? In its most basic sense, it means that you acknowledge him as your spiritual father and that you want to be like him. In return, St .Joseph will provide his undivided attention, protection and guidance. Using Fr. Don Calloway’s book “Consecration to St. Jo- seph: The Wonders of our Spiritual Father,” we will begin this 33 day program the week after Easter. There are sev- eral ways that you can participate. You may join with the Bible Buddies on Wednesdays (Apr. 7th) or the Faithful Friends on Thursdays (Apr. 8th) from 10am to 12pm in Novena Prayer to St. Joseph the café, or you may work on the program on your own. In addition, if there is enough interest, another in person O Glorious St. Joseph, session or a Zoom meeting may be scheduled.
