SAGE PAGE STAFFORD SENIOR CENTER Jan. 2021 Edition #282 FROM THE DIRECTOR Happy new year! I think I can speak for all of us when I say that I am not sorry to see 2020 go away. It has been a very difficult year, but we have all done our best to weather the many storms that came our way. Now let’s turn our sights toward 2021; when with continued safety measures, time, vaccines, and a little luck, we will hopefully get to a place that looks more like “normal” to us. Mark your calendars! There are a few new items in this month’s Sage Page that are worth looking at. Beginning this month, there will be a new, once per month “Zoom Tech Time” available. It will be presented by Audra Lauf from Comfort Keepers in Enfield. She will help you with your questions about smartphone and internet usage. This will be a monthly event, occurring on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Anyone interested in joining should RSVP to my office by emailing me at parrowg@staffordct.org by the Monday before, which will be January 25th for this month. I will then forward your email addresses to Audra so she can send you the Zoom invite in a separate email. There are also two other online events that may interest you. The first is a presentation about the history of G. Fox and Company in Hartford, given by the CT Historical Society. This is a Zoom event, and will be held on January 15th at 3:00 PM. The link to the event to put in your computer browser is found on the event page of this newsletter. Music lovers will want to check out the free, online performance by the Airborne Jazz Trio on January 29 th at 6:00 PM. Make yourself a nice dinner, have your beverage of choice by your side, and make an evening of it! The link to this performance can be found inside.
NEW SHOPPING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The North Central Area Agency on Aging is coordinating a temporary program to help area seniors who are experiencing difficulty in shopping for/paying for groceries due to the pandemic. The program will assist with shopping for and delivery of food staples to augment seniors’ food security. There are copies of the required intake form and shopping form at the back of this Sage Page. Forms should be filled out and returned to Grace at the Senior Center (3 Buckley Hwy), and she will forward them to the NCAAA. Approved clients will be contacted by the shoppers with the NCAAA to go over their lists and be given counseling about other food resources. This is a temporary, supplemental program, and should not be relied upon for immediate or pressing food needs. Participants can expect one delivery per month. Funding for this program is limited, so I ask that anyone who has enough money for their food needs and a way to get their own groceries not apply. This will leave the funding for those who need the extra monetary and/or shopping and delivery assistance. ENERGY ASSISTANCE The energy assistance program is taking applications now for assistance with winter heating bills. The ACCESS Agency has added an online application option this year. Call Jenn at 684-7752 for more information. A key component of the store’s success was the leadership of the Fox family and its commitment to both customers and employees. We must face many challenges in life; let’s take it in stride. Let’s not forget or ever regret who we are all. We are all like shining stars. We’ve come so far to be who we are. Let’s have a great new year! WINTER FUN by Kim McKinney Winter fun in the sun and in the snow. It will show how much fun it is to play in the snow. I hope it won’t be slow before we blossom into spring and swing into warmer weather.
