Alberta Adventure Divers Oct. 3, 2020 newsletter 2020 Mystery Dive & Pumpkin Dive Incredible fun at our pumpkin dive. Winter dive store hours. This is a fun newsletter to write – there are so many great stories, adventures and pictures to share! The key story is how we – respectfully, and safely – held the pumpkin dive when Covid restrictions and concerns are ruling our lives! The story is also about the ‘pumpkin that got away’ – the first time a diver has taken a pumpkin down, and lost it on a runaway! It was likely a winning pumpkin Wendy. Perhaps the best story is the dry land ‘Legendary Sea Creatures’ crossword puzzle that kept everyone thinking! Thanks for creating this mind bender Tammy. Or is the true story that this was Roxanne’s birthday, and the pumpkin dive was a ploy to have a celebration with deluxe cupcakes for all – thanks Jen at Whisk Deserts in St. Albert! Thanks to all who joined us for the Pumpkin Dive. A special welcome to those who have rarely or never dove in Clear Lake, and those who travelled from around AB and SK for the event.
More stories: The fun stories of the day start with our divers getting out the door at their homes – with their essential equipment. I realize that in 2020 it is most exciting to head out to do anything!!! In the excitement, at least one family left their carefully chosen pumpkin sitting by the door at home - placed there so ‘I won’t forget it.’ Thanks to those who had extra pumpkins to loan out, all divers ended up with a pumpkin to carve. OK, a pumpkin is an unusual thing to remember for a dive event. I get that. The next diver left their bcd in Edmonton, right by the door again. Another diver left his dry suit underwear and boots at home, and so on! It’s a good thing David keeps a well- stocked save-a-dive trailer, as all divers were able to dive. Do you like the shark on dive trailer guard duty? Dive briefings: Another cool story is the new presenters at the dive briefing. Did you know that public speaking is one of the greatest fears that many people have? We are very proud of our divemaster candidates Jim and Isaac, who did admirable jobs in presenting the dive safety portions of the briefings. This checks off another skill on their journey to completing the divemaster program. Well done! Lost and found: Does anyone recognize this flashlight? It was found when cleaning up the dive trailer this week.
Winners: There are no losers at the pumpkin dive: everyone wins when you have a great day with fun people. Everyone takes home a draw prize, great memories, and bragging rights! It’s wonderful to spend a fall day enjoying the outdoors. Before we even started diving there were hands down winners for the best hat; and the best facemask: I know, these aren’t even official categories, but they rock! We love the octopus hat Ashely; I can’t believe you made it. Your knitting talents are incredible. Miranda wins for best face covering! The mystery dive was an artistic endeavor: find five posters, draw exactly what you see on your slate. Plus, unscramble a word. Our judge Charlie is a creative person, and developed a spreadsheet to sort out the judging elements! At the end, three teams tied for completing an accurate drawing, plus unscrambling the word. The run off for a tie was a scuba trivia contest, run by David. Congratulations John and Terina for winning the mystery dive and scuba trivia contest. Pumpkin carving winners: This is not an easy task, as the pumpkins are creative and well done! Charlie, with his team of independent and unbribe-able judges Cathy W and Kevin B. had the toughest job of the day. Thanks guys! Each dive team came out of the water bragging that their pumpkin was the best ever!

Dry Land pumpkins: Drake - Scariest Zayden - artistic Seth&Josh-originality&imagination Every dive is a clean-up dive. Special thanks to Cathy from the Alberta Underwater Council, who gave a cool t-shirt to anyone who found garbage – on land or in the water. Alberta Underwater Council: This is the provincial body for underwater sporting activities in the province of Alberta. The AUC promotes local diving, and in a normal year has numerous events around the province. Thank to Cathie, John and Terina for coming out to help with AUC registrations and dive. What a surprise when Cathie gave each diver a cool AUC drinking glass and a set of sea snips – the best snips ever! These alone are worth more than the nominal $20 AUC registration fee. PADI certified Underwater Pumpkin Carvers! Congratulations: The PADI certification cards are on the way! If you are working on your master scuba diver rating, this PADI card does count as one of the five specialty certifications. Pumpkin Dive thank you: The Advance Team of Jim, Isaac, Peter, Vance and Matthew who set out the UW posters Registration & greeters: Roxanne, Cathy and Tina: you rock the registration table! Surface photographer Tammy & apprentice! Trailer support and air fills: thanks Kevin B! You kept us all diving. We have an awesome support team: thank you!
A heartfelt thanks to each diver and surface support for enjoying this event with us at Clear Lake. Environmentally friendly event: The completed pumpkins were either taken home by their proud owners to put on their doorstep, or were donated to Vance, who feeds them to his pigs and yaks. Who knew they love pumpkin! Bloopers and take-outs: Nooooo – the knife is for the pumpkin! Muh ha ha – which one to choose! Grandbaby Gabe, packing up for his first pumpkin dive! Classic! Thanks for joining in the fun. Connie, David and Dan!
