Friday 9th March 2018 Visit us at www.kingsavenueschool.co.uk Dear Parents and Carers, I hope you all had a good week now that the weather has settled with slightly higher temperatures and a full week of school. I hope you did enjoy the snow though. This week was dedicated to books and reading. We were lucky to have had children’s author EJ Clark who visited us on Tuesday and inspired the children to write good stories and entertained children in both Key stages in two assemblies. He talked the children through how a story can start and how to make it ultimately more interesting! Each story starts with a question and more questions come from there. In his story Rowan Oakwing, the author EJ Clarke talked about how he came up with the fasci- nating story of his book. He even took trips through London to research his book, including finding a unique tree called a Weeping Beech in Hyde park. The children were asked to participate and suggest ideas as to how to make their own stories and writing even better! The author expounded on how not to be put off writing stories - if you have a good idea, get it writ- ten down! Then you can improve it and start on that journey to become a real author! After he had read out an exciting chapter of his book, he encouraged the children to help write a new story! The ideas the children suggested ended up with an invisible child who is afraid of animals. However, this child wanted an invisible pet that obviously he couldn’t find! So he has to face certain challenges to overcome in his quest to find that pet! The message was that anyone can be a writer and an author; you just need dedication and imagination! All the classes visited the Clapham Library where children were signed up as members. They were also issued with borrowing cards which parents must take with them to the library to borrow books. All the children enjoyed the experience very much, especially the opportunity to discover new titles of books and learn about new authors too. The children also helped to choose some books that the teachers have borrowed for them. These books will be read in class and remain at school. Parents please do take your children to borrow books from the library. Then the highlight of the week was World Book Day which was celebrated on Thursday. This day was postponed from last week due to the closure of school. The children and staff dressed in their favourite book characters. Children spoke about their favourite books and authors at the assembly. Then all children became authors for the day. They worked all day on their very own stories which were published later in the afternoon. These stories were then shared with the rest of the classes. Our school library was also opened to all children. Every class visited the new library and had a look at the new books and had an opportunity to read in this beautiful space. Children will be borrowing from this library from next week onwards. There will be a special opening for all parents on Monday 12 th and Wednesday 14th March from 2.30pm onwards. Please come in and see how your money has been used to create a beautiful library with lots of new books for the children.
4C visited the Imperial War Museum as part of their study of World War 2. The children looked at exhibits and models. They also had the opportunity to meet an evacuee who told them all about his life as a child. Our very youngest children, the Nursery went on a visit to Clapham Common. They are learning all about transport and were very lucky when one of our parents who is a bus driver came and told them all about his job. They then walked to the bus stop and took the bus to the park where they looked at mini-beasts and enjoyed having some free space to play with their friends. On Monday 5th March, our school governors spent the day with us. They spent their morning visiting classes - from Nursery all the way up to Year 6. They observed lessons, looked at the work children have done in their books and listened to staff. They were very encouraged by all they saw and heard. They were especially pleased to see so much attention being paid to improving children's reading and to see teaching assistants playing a more active role advancing children's learning in the classroom. In the afternoon, governors looked closely at the children's results, as they usually do, and reviewed the school’s financial position. They were pleased to see good progress is being made on both fronts. Governors want to thank all the parents who came to Parents' Evening, and all the school staff who made the event run so smoothly. Good to see so many parents in the school discussing their children's education with Kings Avenue teachers. This week we are asking parents to put themselves (or another parent) forward for election as parent governors. Parent governors play a very important role in the life of our school, participating in important discussions and decisions and making sure we have a diverse board that includes people from all groups who are involved with the school. Governors meet twice a term, usually on a Monday evening. There are currently two parent governor places vacant. Elections will take place on Monday 19th March. We expect OFSTED to inspect Kings Avenue anytime soon. The inspectors will want to know what parents think about the school, so we kindly ask all parents who have not already done so to comment on Kings Avenue via the Parent View website https:// parentview.ofsted.gov.uk Linguascope We are delighted to inform you that Kings Avenue has renewed the membership for Linguascope. Linguascope is a learning language website your child can access via the internet. Your child will be able to learn new vocabulary, practice the ones we have learned in class and play games to reinforce their learning. The website is very easy to use and they are familiarized as we use it in class. There are different languages and levels as well as a wide range of activities. They will also be able to use it as a tool to learn and reinforce their English, which will enhance their comprehension and vocabulary. How to log in to Linguascope: - Go to www.linguascope.com - Enter student username: kingsave - Enter student password: languages18 - Click login - Choose the level you want to do - Choose the language (i.e. if you click in Elementary, then Caramba for Spanish, Oops for English) All the instructions are in English.
