LEOPARD LINK February 2021 Principal’s Message: Dear Parents and Students- Welcome to Term 3 everyone! We are glad to have everyone return from Christmas break healthy and happy. This time of the year is so beneficial for students in their academic growth. If your child hasn’t told you about our Dole Whip celebration, make sure to ask. Students have been working so hard the first half of the year to complete a variety of different goals. After our school wide celebration, new growth goals have been set as we continue the years progress. We are so proud of students for their hard work and leadership skills as we all try to lead the change, rise up, and choose courage over comfort. Our final Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2021. Usually this is the Conference where we hold our Walking Report Cards, and students are able to show you all of the great things they’ve learned. With the COVID Protocols in place, we will have to hold off on this until further notice, and instead we will be holding Zoom Conferences as we did in October and December. Watch for Sign ups with your students' individual teachers. We thank the PTA for our White Ribbon Week. It was nice to have some fun and learning that allowed students to interact and earn a prize as a class. Since we haven’t been able to hold our usual assemblies, the Netsmartz videos were also a fun change of pace and learning. With Valentines just around the corner, I just wanted families to know how we would handle the celebration, while continuing to reinforce our safety protocols. Treats for class members will be brought on Feb. 12th. Students will sanitize before handing treats out, and then all treats will be taken home. Watch for further information being sent home by your child’s teacher. Just as a reminder, we will not have field trips through the rest of this school year. We are hoping by the 2021-2022 school year, that we are able to continue on with these great educational learning opportunities. The last bit of information that I have to let you know is that our practice drill for the month of February will be a Shelter in Place. This is a drill that takes place if we need to keep students safely inside the building. -Mrs. Thomas

Attached are some important tips to consider. Suicide and suicide ideation are on the rise with our youth, even amongst elementary school-age children. Please take a few minutes to review these tips for communicating with your children. Paren Suppo. Ti : Buildin Confidenc i you chil . As parents and educators, we wish for all students to build a strong sense of confidence to take with them throughout their life. Responsibilities, challenges and learning experiences provide opportunities for growth through age-appropriate decision making and problem solving activities.
Allowing your children to make ‘safe failures’ to build resilience. Such failures include spilling milk, forgetting homework, losing a game, among many other possible scenarios. It gives them the chance to consider what they will do next time, and what they learned from the experience. Teaching your children that failing sometimes is okay and is a good parenting practice. Help them process the experience by genuinely listening and asking questions. Parents don’t need to rush to fix the problem for their children, and this practice usually backfires, creating for children a sense of anxiety over any and every mistake. Children need examples of perseverance. Talk about examples from your own life and how you overcome your challenges. Showing kids how to persevere in the midst of hardship is a lifelong skill that helps build confidence in children. If you or your child is in need of additional support, please reach out to me. I am available at Larsen Elementary Monday through Friday. Counselor Contact Information: Roxanne Shumway roxanne.shumway@nebo.edu 801.798.4035
