(1) Purpose
  §   Highlight safety matters for all
      riders, and
  §   Review course risks

(4) COVID-Safe Processes (Friday-Sunday)
Arrival
•   Arriving at RNA, masks on, and carry your mask during your ride or race
•   Check-in using the Queensland Check In App
•   An additional disposable mask will be provided in your participant pack
Finish
•   Masks must again be worn for entry into the Showgrounds and Recovery
    area
•   Physically distanced presentations will proceed in the Arena

Other measures will be advised as we receive updates from Department of
Health: Based on current guidelines:-
    •   Riders are not required to wear a mask during the ride, and this can
        be placed in your pocket on the start line

§      If you haven’t already, please complete the Splatt Lawyers Rider Safety
       Program www.nxsports.org/courses/roadsafewithsplatt2021/
Some basics:
i.     Force Field: be aware of cyclists in front-beside-behind (try for 2 metres apart)
ii.    Eyes Up: look ahead – read the ride, see the corners, anticipate course in your
       mind
iii.   Descents: keep left, 2 hands & 2 brakes – don't cut corners – allow 20m
       stopping
iv.    Half wheeling – is extremely dangerous
v.     Ride: to the left and allow overtaking on on the right – and talk or shout
vi.    Prepare: know the course and the hazards, know your own ability, check the
       machinery, pack 2 tubes & tools

    onto Ellis Street
•   !Very fast descent
•   !!! Nasty 3 corners if attacked fast

Spotlight #2 – Bus Portal South

•   6.2km from start
•   Left turn from Grey St onto
    Melbourne St, then into Busway
•   ! TIGHT 90degree corner in &
    out

o   SLOW DOWN before corner
o   Not suitable for passing
o   Start of two-direction flow in
    tunnel
Spotlight #3 – School Road

•   22.6km from start - exit of the busway
•   No verge on School Rd or start of
    Priestdale Rd
•   ! Riders two-directions at 90degree
    corner

o   DO NOT cross the centre line
o   SLOW DOWN coming down the hill
o   Not suitable for passing
Spotlight #4 – Merging Piccolo Riders

•   66.5km from start - Griffith Uni
    Busway
•   ! Watch for merging riders from
    feeding and from Piccolo
•   ! Riders are in two-direction flow

o   DO NOT cross the centre line
o   KEEP YOUR LINE
o   Not suitable for passing
Spotlight #5 – Mt Coot-tha Opt Out

•   89.6km from start - Birdwood Tc &
    Mt Coot-tha Rd
•   ! Very hectic
•   ! Can be a fast approach

o   Keep your line on the approach
o   No late lane changes
o   UCI Gran Fondo Qualifiers MUST
    complete the climb
Spotlight #6 – Mt Coot-tha Descent

•   97km from start - Mt Coot-tha
•   ! Tight turns in rapid succession
    near Cafe
•   ! Wrong side of the road
•   ! Approching righthand
    extremely fast corner at bottom

o   Slower riders MUST KEEP LEFT
o   Faster riders shout as overtaking
    on the right while descending
Spotlight #7 – Spaghetti Junction

•   2km to finish – exit off ICB
•   ! Fast descents off ICB
•   ! 90degree technical turn
    right
•   ! Gutter and dipp and narrow
    road
•   ! Passing is extremely RISKY
