Call for partnership proposals to host Jazz North’s 2019 northern line showcase “We’re inviting expressions of interest from festivals, venues and promoters based in the North of England who would like to be our delivery partner for the 2019 edition of the northern line showcase” Deadline for proposals: 6 August 2018
About northern line northern line is Jazz North’s flagship scheme to support touring across the North of England. The scheme offers a subsidy towards the artist fees for a selected roster of musicians therefore reducing the financial risk to promoters and encouraging more jazz performances across the region. For the last 6 years, the annual showcase has pre- sented the latest selection of artists to join the northern line roster in a day-long celebration of high quality and diverse talent. The event offers an open invitation for jazz audiences, alongside promoters and programmers from across the UK to visit, sample the music and learn first-hand about the artists on the scheme. The showcase has been presented in partnership with manchester jazz festival for the last 5 years and, with their support, has become a key event in the Jazz North calendar. We now want to reimagine what the showcase might look like going forward, and we are looking for proposals for host partners from 2019 onwards. northern line artists 2013 - to date ACV Iain Dixon / Les Chisnall Skeltr Adam Fairhall Inclusion Principle Space F!ght Archipelago Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra Jamil Sheriff Trio Stuart McCallum & The Real Strings Artephis John Bailey Quintet Svarc Hanley Longhawn Billy Moon John Ellis Trio Täpp Birkett & Fisk play Venuti & Lang Johnny Hunter Quartet Taupe Blind Monk Maja Bugge The ElecTrio Bugalu Foundation Manchester Jazz Collective The Initiative Cameron Vale Manjula The Jamie Brownfield Quartet Dan Whieldon Quartet Deep Cabaret Mark Williams Trio The Jazz Worriers Djangologie Matt Holborn Quartet The Lindsay Hannon Plus Dread Supreme Microscopic The Pat McCarthy Quartet Early Nite Mike Walker & Stuart McCallum The Slowlight Quartet Emma Johnson’s Gravy Boat New York Brass Band The Weave Engine Room Favourites Nicola Farnon Trio Tipping Point Family Band Pan Jumby Tiptoe Firebird Quartet Paul Taylor Treppenwitz glowe_ Perpetual Motion Machine Ubunye Graeme Wilson Quartet Ponyland Unfurl Grew Quartet Portmanteau Ushaw Ensemble HSQ Plus Shatners bassoon Zoe Gilby Quartet HTrio Simon Read Octet
Basic requirements for partner There are basic requirements that a partner would need to meet in order to be considered, however we are open to all ideas as to the presentation of this exciting event. The festival, venue or promoter check list: Must be in the north of England Must be able to present live performances from all artists selected on the 2019/20 roster (approx. 10 in total) in suitable performance spaces Must ensure that these performance opportunities offer around 40 minutes of music from each artist, without overlap Must be free for the public to attend Must be technically equipped as required to deliver the performance Must be willing to allow filming and recording to take place in the performance spaces and surrounding area. Must accommodate all musicians (av. 50) participating in the scheme throughout the day, with breakout spaces suitable for use as a green room and for video interviews. Will be promoted as events within the partner’s overall programme Every venue should be fully accessible Must be equipped with good production, backline, FOH and technical resources including staffing, or with easy access to hiring of equipment if required May be at any time of year A space should be made available for up to 75 people that is suitable for a VIP reception and net- working session between artists and promoters. Ideally, the showcase should take place over one day as this enables our promoter guests to meet and experience all of the artists in one visit and also allows us to bring in the crew to film and re- cord the whole roster efficiently. If a one-day event is not possible, please outline how you would deliver the showcase in a format that works for us. What Jazz North can provide All artists’ fees for the performances PRS Royalty payments for the showcase performances Support staff to help deliver the event as required Any unusual backline or technical requirements for the performances Drinks/refreshments for the VIP reception
