Pastor’s Letter Welcome Home March 28, 2021 Dear Parish Family, On Palm Sunday I always remember my first trip to the Holy Land. It was a long flight, more than twelve hours from JFK to Israel, and with the time difference, we landed the following afternoon from the evening we left. We met our guide, who after settling us in the bus for another long journey to Galilee, cheerfully greeted us with a warm “Welcome Home!” Yes, the Holy Land is our spiritual home. The city of Jerusalem is especially important because it is the place of the dying and rising of Jesus. It is the city of the washing of feet and celebration of the Last Supper. It is spiritual home also to Judaism and Islam. Even as we cherish this sacred land we see it marked by all of the political and religious conflicts that mark our lives. As we celebrate the entrance of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem today, we also mark the beginning of Holy Week. Holy Week is a kind of spiritual home base for all of us, an opportunity to return to the most important events of our spiritual lives. We are entering God’s city. Our church and community are God’s city. The world is God’s city and this year it is a world filled with illness and grief, a world that is reaching out for hope. But what will life be like in this city of God? How will God bring us hope? Holy Week helps us to understand what God is doing in our world and in our lives. Holy Thursday remembers the institution of the Eucharist and profoundly connects the Eucharist to simple acts of loving service. As we remember Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet, we are called to reflect on what our world would be like if we were all more devoted to serving one another as Christ served his disciples. Good Friday remembers the suffering and dying of Jesus and how the passion of the Lord is connected to the many ways that people suffer in our world. The message of God’s mercy and compassion reminds us that God is near to the sick, the dying and the bereaved, and especially to those who, like Jesus, suffer from the violence and hatred of others. Good Friday invites us to be near and stay near to those who are hurting in God’s city. The celebrations of Easter are always beautiful. They are even more meaningful when we have walked the entire journey with the Lord from triumphal entrance into the Holy City to the place of his resurrection. I hope that as you celebrate the entrance of God into our city today, you will also plan to be with us at all the special celebrations of this most Holy Week. Perhaps this week is the right time for you to come to church “live and in person.” Or maybe it is better for you to keep safe and to join us online. However you choose to celebrate this week, remember that you are always welcome here at Sacred Hearts. Welcome home! Sincerely yours in Christ! Reg. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Reconciliation in Holy Week Receiving the Sacrament of reconciliation is an excellent practice in the season of Lent. Our parish celebrates this sacrament every Saturday from 4:00 to 4:45 PM before our Saturday evening mass. Our pastor and priests who assist here are also available by appointment to celebrate the sacrament. During Holy Week we will join with all the parishes of our diocese to celebrate reconciliation from 3 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, March 29th and Holy Saturday from 10 to 11 am. Be sure to take some time to experience the miracle of God’s healing forgiveness.
Gloria (not read during Lent) Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. The Gospel of the Entrance into Jerusalem Mark 11:1-10 When Jesus and his disciples drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethpage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone should say to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ reply, ‘The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.’” So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it. Some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it. So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest! Entrance Hymn: Hosanna to the Son of David Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. Refrain: Lord we lift up your name, with hearts full of praise. Be exalted, O Lord my God. Hosanna in the highest. Glory, Glory, Glory to the Kings of Kings. Glory, Glory, Glory to the Kings of Kings. Refrain
First Reading: Isaiah: 50:4-7 The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. Psalm: My Soul is Thirsting Refrain: My soul is thirsting, my body pines; for you my heart is longing. Your love is better than life itself; you are the God who upholds me. You are the God whom I seek. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in ap- pearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Gospel Refrain Love lifted on the cross for me: My Lord, my lord, my salvation. Love lifted high to set me free: My Lord, my God, my salvation
Evening Mass of The Lord’s Supper Presentation of the Oils Like burning incense, O Lord, let my prayer rise up to you First Reading: Exodus: 12:1-8, 11-14 Tell the whole community of Israel: On the tenth of this month every one of your families must procure for itself a lamb, one apiece for each household. If a family is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join the nearest household in procuring one and shall share in the lamb in proportion to the number of persons who partake of it. The lamb must be a year-old male and without blemish. You may take it from either the sheep or the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, and then, with the whole assembly of Israel present, it shall be slaughtered during the evening twilight. They shall take some of its blood and apply it to the two doorposts and the lintel of every house in which they partake of the lamb. That same night they shall eat its roasted flesh with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. “This is how you are to eat it: with your loins girt, sandals on your feet and your staff in hand, you shall eat like those who are in flight. It is the Passover of the Lord. For on this same night I will go through Egypt, striking down every firstborn of the land, both man and beast, and executing judgment on all the gods of Egypt—I, the Lord! But the blood will mark the houses where you are. Seeing the blood, I will pass over you; thus, when I strike the land of Egypt, no destructive blow will come upon you. “This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate with pilgrimage to the Lord, as a perpetual institution.” Psalm: Our Blessing Cup Our blessing cup is a communion with the blood of Christ; and the bread we break, it is a sharing in the body of the Lord Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Brothers and sisters: I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. Gospel: John 13:1-15 Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end. The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Master, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later.” Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well.” Jesus said to him, “Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all.” For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, “Not all of you are clean.” So when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, “Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.”
Good Friday Readings First Reading: Isaiah: 52:13-53:12 See, my servant shall prosper, he shall be raised high and greatly exalted. Even as many were amazed at him— so marred was his look beyond human semblance and his appearance beyond that of the sons of man— so shall he startle many nations, because of him kings shall stand speechless; for those who have not been told shall see, those who have not heard shall ponder it. Who would believe what we have heard? To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? He grew up like a sapling before him, like a shoot from the parched earth; there was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him, nor appearance that would attract us to him. He was spurned and avoided by people, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, one of those from whom people hide their faces, spurned, and we held him in no esteem. Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, each following his own way; but the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all. Though he was harshly treated, he submitted and opened not his mouth; like a lamb led to slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was silent and opened not his mouth. Oppressed and condemned, he was taken away, and who would have thought any more of his destiny? When he was cut off from the land of the living, and smitten for the sin of his people, a grave was assigned him among the wicked and a burial place with evildoers, though he had done no wrong nor spoken any falsehood. But the Lord was pleased to crush him in infirmity. If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall see his descendants in a long life, and the will of the Lord shall be accomplished through him. Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear. Therefore I will give him his portion among the great, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, because he surrendered himself to death and was counted among the wicked; and he shall take away the sins of many, and win pardon for their offenses. Second Reading: Hebrews: 4:14-16; 5:7-9 Brothers and sisters: Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help. In the days when Christ was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. Gospel Verse Jesus Remember me, when you Come into your kingdom Jesus Remember me, when you Come into your kingdom

Eucharistic Adoration on Fridays from 9 AM to Noon Pope Francis has declared this year to be time of inter- cessory prayer to St. Joseph. Joseph protected Mary as she gave birth to Jesus, he guarded Jesus from Herod’s attempts to destroy him, and he watched over the life and growth of Jesus with fatherly care. Now we ask Joseph to watch over and protect the lives of all, especially our children, born and unborn. Join us each week immediately following the Friday 9 AM Mass. Reflection On the Gospel March 28, 2021 If your head is spinning this Sunday, you have good reason. It is Palm Sunday, but also Passion Sunday, a contrast in two Gospels. First we have the glorious entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in which he is treated and greeted like royalty. Later we hear the gruesome details of betrayal, denial, mockery, humiliation, false Spirituality accusations, torture, and brutal execution all of the same Jesus by many of the same people. What happened— and in such a short period of time? Hard to imagine—or is it? How many times have we witnessed similar fickleness or been guilty of it ourselves? How often hypocrisy or double standard? It is easy to judge the ordinary people in Jesus’s passion. It is likely we want to identify with the courageous women who stood with Jesus while others hid, but can we honestly and humbly place ourselves in the scene? Where would we be? One line in the second Gospel could serve as a test: “The poor you will always have with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them.” We all know the first half of that sentence, but the second?” How do we treat the poor? Do we do good to them as is in our power, or do we divert attention elsewhere to avoid that responsibility? This Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and throughout the year, let’s try harder to be more consistently good, so our heads don’t have to spin and leave us feeling dizzy. Almsgiving in Lent Lent is a perfect time for us to pray for those in need - whether it is for their material, emotional or spiritual needs. And when you practice fasting and abstinence during these forty days, please remember those of our neighbors who are hungry and consider sharing your gifts with them. One good way to do this is by making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, which supports programs that help feed people in our community each year through both Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach Centers To make a dona on, make your checks payable to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. You can also visit drvc.org/CMA or call us at 516-678-5800 ext. 296

Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School Our Lady of the Hamptons is the premier Catholic elementary school on the East End and proudly serves the members of this parish. The growth of this school stands as a great tribute to the vision and courage of the parish and school leadership, dedicated teachers and caring parents over the years. A strong religious background, rigorous academics, modern facilities and a strong fine arts framework are the hallmarks of the OLH Regional School experience. OLH and its supporting parishes has been challenged to seek grants and donations...investments in our Church and country.... If the school can “find” one hundred thousand dollars in support during the month of March, that amount will be matched by an anonymous donor. His matching gift will go directly to the Morningstar Initiative and, in turn, to Tomorrow’s Hope, the foundation that subsidizes families in need of tuition assistance. This is a win-win situation! If you know of someone who may be interested in accepting this challenge, please contact your pastor, or Sister Kathy.
