Am I my Brother’s Keeper?
Russian president Vladimir Putin
penned a 7,000-word essay published in
Russian and Ukrainian last summer arguing
that Russia and Ukraine were brothers and
“one people.” To that, Ukrainian president
Volodymyr Zelensky quipped, “More like
Cain and Abel.”
The Book of Genesis has a disturbing
story of fratricide (Ch. 4), a brother killing
his own brother. When Cain is filled with intense jealousy and hatred, he becomes too blind to
see his own flesh and blood in his brother. When Cain hides after killing his brother Abel, God
looks for him, “Where are you?” Cain’s response is callous and troublesome: “Am I my brother’s
keeper?”
Unfortunately, we see hatred, conflicts, shameless violation of human rights, and threats of
war today. Reasons vary. Naked ambitions for gaining territories and resources are often obvious
beyond ideological and political justification.
The most fundamental truth of humanity remains: We are all part of one another. Every
single human person belongs to one human family under one Creator and Father of all. This
simple and fundamental truth is often forgotten and deliberately disregarded time and time again.
The logic of violence and revenge can easily lead one to cynical despair in humanity and into the
Black Hole of abyss and mutual annihilation.
In this regard, Mark Twain intuits in his irony, hitting the bullseye: “The Bible tells us to love
our neighbors and also love our enemies; probably because they are generally the same people.”
The most distinctive characteristic of Christian discipleship is the love of one’s enemies. It
may also be the toughest. Jesus urges his disciples to respond to hatred with love (Luke 6:27-35;
Matthew 5:43-48). Humanly speaking, this seems impossible. But it is precisely the imitation of
God’s infinite compassion that followers of Christ are to undertake.
God “is good to the ungrateful and the wicked” (Luke 6:35). What is new in the Gospel is
not so much that God is the source of goodness, but that human beings can and should act in the
image of their Creator: “Be merciful, as your Father is merciful!” (Luke 6:36).
When we are not vigilant, we can unwittingly succumb to the temptation of hatred,
violence, and retaliation. Our mission is clear: imitate God and His infinite mercy, as shown by
Christ, which involves forgiveness and reconciliation. This is the most challenging feature of our
Christian discipleship. But this is not an option for Christians. Even our tradition of the just war
principle is rooted in the mandate of love of our neighbors. Just war theory is far more than a
rationalization of violence. It is an indispensable framework for protecting the innocent, and as
such, expresses Jesus’ command to “Love thy neighbor.”
Jesus urges us to go beyond our distinctions among people so that we can see one another
as brothers and sisters. As Jesus on the cross shows humanity a new way to break through the
impasse of ingrained prejudice and hatred: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they
do” (Lk 23:34), he opens the door to hope and life. Through the power of His Holy Spirit, may
we also overcome the instinct and logic of hatred and revenge, and learn to love one another
without distinction or limit! Lord, make us instruments of peace!

Healing After Abortion

ness, regret or guilt after abortion?
You are not alone. Any woman, who has gone through
the abortion experience, is invited to attend an Enter-
ing Canaan Day of Prayer and Healing on Saturday,
April 23, 2022. You will find the Sacraments, a caring
retreat team, a witness talk, and a non-judgmental at-
mosphere, to heal from this shame and other negative
emotions that come after abortion. Exact location and
participation is confidential, due to the personal nature
of this experience. We will follow social distancing reg-

¿Soy Yo Acaso el Guardian de mi Hermano?
El presidente Ruso Vladimir Putin
escribió el verano pasado un ensayo de

Ucraniano argumentando que Rusia y
Ucrania eran hermanos y “un solo pueblo”. A
eso, el presidente Ucraniano Volodymyr
Zelensky bromeó: “Más como Caín y Abel”.
El Libro de Génesis tiene una historia
inquietante de fratricidio (Cap. 4), un hermano que mata a su propio hermano. Cuando Caín se
llena de intensos celos y odio, se vuelve demasiado ciego para ver su propia carne y sangre en su
hermano. Cuando Caín se esconde después de matar a su hermano Abel, Dios lo busca, “¿Dónde
estás?” La respuesta de Caín es insensible y dudosa: “¿Soy yo el guardián de mi hermano?”
Desafortunadamente, hoy vemos odio, conflictos, violaciones desvergonzadas de los derechos
humanos y amenazas de guerra. Las razones cambian. Las ambiciones desnudas de ganar territorios
y recursos con frecuenccia son obvias más allá de la justificación ideológica y política.
La verdad fundamental de la humanidad permanece: todos somos parte unos de otros. Cada
persona humana pertenece a una sola familia humana bajo un Creador y Padre de todos. Esta
verdad simple y fundamental con frecuencia se olvida y se ignora intencionalmente una y otra vez.
La lógica de la violencia y la venganza puede conducir fácilmente a la desesperación cínica de la
humanidad y al Agujero Negro del abismo y la aniquilación mutua.
Al respecto, Mark Twain intuye en su ironía, dando en el blanco: “La Biblia nos dice que
amemos a nuestro prójimo y amemos también a nuestros enemigos; probablemente porque
generalmente son las mismas personas”.
La característica más distintiva del discipulado cristiano es el amor a los enemigos. También
puede ser el más duro. Jesús pide a sus discípulos a responder al odio con amor (Lucas 6:27-35;
Mateo 5:43-48). Humanamente hablando, esto parece imposible. Pero es precisamente la imitación
de la compasión infinita de Dios lo que deben emprender los seguidores de Cristo.
Dios “es bueno con los ingratos y los malos” (Lucas 6:35). La novedad del Evangelio no es tanto
que Dios sea fuente de bondad, sino que el ser humano puede y debe actuar a imagen de su
Creador: “¡Sed misericordiosos, como vuestro Padre es misericordioso!”. (Lucas 6:36).
Cuando no estamos atentos, podemos sucumbir sin darnos cuenta a la tentación del odio, la
violencia y las represalias. Nuestra misión es clara: imitar a Dios y su infinita misericordia, como la
mostró Cristo, que implica el perdón y la reconciliación. Esta es la característica más desafiante de
nuestro discipulado cristiano. Pero esta no es una opción para los cristianos. Incluso nuestra
tradición del principio de la guerra justa tiene sus raíces en el mandato del amor al prójimo. La
teoría de la guerra justa es mucho más que una racionalización de la violencia. Es un marco
indispensable para proteger a los inocentes y, como tal, expresa el mandato de Jesús de “Amar a tu
prójimo”.
Jesús nos invita a ir más allá de nuestras distinciones entre las personas para que podamos vernos
unos a otros como hermanos y hermanas. Cuando Jesús en la cruz muestra a la humanidad una
nueva manera de salir del callejón sin salida del prejuicio y el odio arraigados: “Padre, perdónalos
porque no saben lo que hacen” (Lc 23,34), abre la puerta a la esperanza y a la vida. ¡Que, por el
poder de su Espíritu Santo, también nosotros superemos el instinto y la lógica del odio y la
venganza, y aprendamos a amarnos unos a otros sin distinción ni límite!
¡Señor, haznos instrumentos de paz!
