Annual Solemn Novena in Honor of
St. Jude Thaddeus
“St. Jude, Apostle of all Nations and Peoples.”
Novena begins October 20, 2021 at 8:00pm
Novena Concludes October 28, 2021 at 8:00pm Mass
Mornings: Novena Prayer (“Various Prayers to Saint Jude” p. 17,) is recit-
ed after 9:00 am mass Mon.-Fri. and at the end of 8:30am Mass Satur-
day.
Evenings: Novena Service begins at 8:00pm and consist of Opening
Hymn, recitation of Novena Prayer (p.15-21). Presentation, Benediction
of the Blessed Sacrament and Veneration of the Relic of St. Jude. Priest
will be available to hear confessions throughout the Novena.
Closing: The Novena will close at 8:00pm on Thursday, October 28 with
a Solemn Mass.
Novena Intentions: Those attending the Novena may write intentions on
paper and place them in the Novena Intention box at the main entrance
of the church.

Celebration, Not Superstition!
Most people are not fond of chain letters, even if their contents may appear devout and sincere. I have been
noticing some of these chain letters left in the church. They give you an unsolicited pressure to spread the
message to others whether they like it or not. Moreover, when the message is ominous with threats and
innuendos of ‘or else’, it leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth. These chain letters with false alarms and
groundless threats of “unless you do this” display an irrational and superstitious outlook. Such an attitude
may not necessarily involve any explicit irreverence to God but reveals a misleading understanding of God
and human persons.
The God who creates us in His overflowing generosity, saves us with compassion, and unites us in His infinite
love, is not such a petty god who checks on our slavish and morbid practice of these capriciously conditional
compulsions. Instead of trying to humbly discern the will of God, a vulnerable and desperate mind may
resort to an irrational superstition.
A lack of joy is conspicuous in these menacing letters. Yet, joy characterizes our spiritual journey. Pope
Francis says: “The joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept
his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ joy is
constantly born anew” (Evangelii Gaudium 1).
We have joy and gratitude, because the Lord is ever coming to us with love and encouragement. It is
heartening to see so many people at 6:30 and 9 am Mass every day. Their regimented and disciplined
spiritual exercise is inspirational and healthy. They anchor their life in the solid axis of the Eucharist, uniting
themselves with Christ at the source and summit of Christian life. They begin a new day with marvel and
gratitude, with joy and hope, welcoming Christ into them and their lives, ready to spread the joy.
Distinguishing genuine devotion from unhealthy piety is paramount. Let’s implore our loving God to sustain
us in our healthy spiritual life. First, if you see any chain letters of this sort, please let me know and/or
dispose of them right away. Nobody needs them. Secondly, if you know any person who is in that fragile
and distressing condition, help the person by encouraging some sound spiritual practices such as daily
Scripture reading and study, finding a good spiritual director, attending daily Mass, etc. Thirdly, let us be
more conscious and intentional about our spiritual growth, which requires a daily disciplined prayer life. We
are all called to be contemplatives in action. Without prayer, there is no Christian faith and discipleship.
Lastly, we need to remember that our life with and in God is a gift. Our salvation is a sheer grace. We do
not earn our eternal life. Even if the burden of our sin and guilt may try to suffocate us, the risen Christ lifts
us up from the wreckage of sin and death. What we are invited to do is joyful and childlike celebration, not
morbid superstition!

¡Celebración, No Superstición!
A la mayoría de las personas no les gustan las cartas en cadena, incluso si su contenido puede parecer devoto
y sincero. He notado que algunas de estas cadenas de cartas quedan en la iglesia. Te dan una presión no
solicitada para difundir el mensaje a otros, les guste o no. Además, cuando el mensaje es ominoso con
amenazas e insinuaciones de "o si no", te deja un sabor amargo en la boca. Estas cadenas de cartas con falsas
alarmas y amenazas infundadas de "a menos que hagas esto" muestran una perspectiva irracional y
supersticiosa. Tal actitud no necesariamente implica una irreverencia explícita hacia Dios, pero revela una
comprensión engañosa de Dios y de las personas humanas.
El Dios que nos crea en su generosidad desbordante, nos salva con compasión y nos une en su amor infinito,
no es un dios tan mezquino que controla nuestra práctica servil y morbosa de estas compulsiones
caprichosamente condicionadas. En lugar de tratar de discernir humildemente la voluntad de Dios, una
mente vulnerable y desesperada puede recurrir a una superstición irracional.
La falta de alegría es evidente en estas cartas amenazadoras. Sin embargo, la alegría caracteriza nuestro viaje
espiritual. El Papa Francisco dice: “La alegría del Evangelio llena el corazón y la vida de todos los que se
encuentran con Jesús. Aquellos que aceptan su oferta de salvación son liberados del pecado, el dolor, el
vacío interior y la soledad. Con Cristo la alegría nace de nuevo constantemente ”(Evangelii Gaudium 1).
Tenemos gozo y gratitud, porque el Señor siempre viene a nosotros con amor y ánimo. Es alentador ver a
tanta gente a las 6:30 y a las 9 am todos los días. Su ejercicio espiritual reglamentado y disciplinado es
inspirador y saludable. Anclan su vida en el eje sólido de la Eucaristía, uniéndose a Cristo en la fuente y
cumbre de la vida cristiana. Comienzan un nuevo día con asombro y gratitud, con gozo y esperanza,
acogiendo a Cristo en ellos y en sus vidas, listos para difundir el gozo.
Distinguir la devoción genuina de la piedad malsana es primordial. Roguemos a nuestro Dios amoroso que
nos sostenga en nuestra vida espiritual saludable. En primer lugar, si ve alguna cadena de letras de este tipo,
hágamelo saber y / o deséchela de inmediato. Nadie los necesita. En segundo lugar, si conoce a alguna
persona que se encuentre en esa condición frágil y angustiosa, ayude a la persona fomentando algunas
prácticas espirituales sólidas, como la lectura y el estudio diario de las Escrituras, la búsqueda de un buen
director espiritual, la asistencia a misa diaria, etc. más consciente e intencional sobre nuestro crecimiento
espiritual, que requiere una vida diaria de oración disciplinada. Todos estamos llamados a ser contemplativos
en acción. Sin oración, no hay fe ni discipulado cristiano. Por último, debemos recordar que nuestra vida con
y en Dios es un regalo. Nuestra salvación es pura gracia. No ganamos nuestra vida eterna. Incluso si la carga
de nuestro pecado y culpa puede tratar de asfixiarnos, el Cristo resucitado nos levanta de los escombros del
pecado y la muerte. ¡Lo que estamos invitados a hacer es una celebración alegre e infantil, no una
superstición morbosa!
