Two Shall Become One!
It is a pleasure and privilege for me to get to know young couples as they prepare for their marriage. Last
couple of months have been difficult for wedding preparation due to the pandemic. My advice to engaged
couples is that you first see a priest and make the arrangement, and then, look for a venue for your
reception. When this is reversed, usually there is more complication. Plus, we have Thaddeus Room and
Madigan Hall for your receptions. They have been recently renovated and are quite nice for receptions.
The sacrament of holy matrimony is all about following the words and example of Jesus: “This is my
commandment: love one another as I love you” (John 15). These words of Jesus refer to the grace and
privilege of friendship and intimacy between God and us, and among ourselves. Love is grace precisely
because it is freely given by God without condition and without merit. Just like our life itself, we are graced
with God’s love, and we are sustained by the love we receive from one another. Hence, we can easily say
love is the meaning and joy of life. Conversely, without love we do not know the joy and meaning of life.
How does Jesus love us? It is by giving and sacrificing his life to us. True love is not self-seeking but self-
giving. We experience this love especially from our parents and other significant people in life. One chooses
to love one’s spouse by giving oneself totally in the sacrament of holy matrimony.
“Marriage helps to overcome self-absorption, egoism, pursuit of one’s own pleasure, and to open oneself to
the other, to mutual aid and to self-giving” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 410). That is what intimacy
and communion, or unity, becoming one body is all about. Intimacy means to share everything with the
other, completely open; a life oriented to each other, giving oneself to the other. This is the opposite of our
popular culture or even instinct. But we learn to grow out of our selfish concerns, to give ourselves to
others, and, ultimately, we learn to give ourselves to God. That is the authentic human growth and
development. Radical individualism accompanied by rampant materialism and consumerism, which afflicts
our age, is like a perpetual immaturity. So, we try to tell ourselves: Grow up!
The grace of Christian marriage is a fruit of Christ’s cross, the source of all Christian life. Then the marriage
covenant will truly be a redemptive and saving relationship, not only to each other and to others. May each
of us be a blessing to one another, instead of being a burden and trouble to one another. Life is an invitation
and a call; life is an answer to that call. Yes, life is an adventure. An adventure to be liberated from our
selfishness to enter into the life of communion, a life in relationship of love with God and with one another.
Let us prayer that God may continue to free us from our selfishness, the prison of egoism and sin.
Let us pray for all marrying and married couples that Christ may be the center of their homes, showing the
path to true happiness. May the Holy Spirit be a constant bond of love, and an unquenchable fire that
overcomes the coldness of despair! May they imitate the generous heart of God the Father so that they may
be generous in accepting, forgiving, and loving each other and their children and extended families.

Que Dos se Conviertan en Uno!
Es un placer y un privilegio para mí conocer a parejas jóvenes mientras se preparan para su matrimonio. Los
últimos años han sido difíciles para la preparación de la boda debido a la pandemia. Mi consejo para las
parejas comprometidas es que primero vean a un sacerdote y hagan los arreglos, y luego busquen un lugar
para su recepción. Cuando esto se invierte, generalmente hay más complicaciones. Además, tenemos los
salones Tadeo y Madigan para sus recepciones. Estos han sido renovados recientemente y son bastante
agradables para recepciones.
El sacramento del santo matrimonio se trata de seguir las palabras y el ejemplo de Jesús: “Este es mi
mandamiento: amaos los unos a los otros como yo os amo” (Juan 15). Estas palabras de Jesús se refieren a la
gracia y el privilegio de la amistad y la intimidad entre Dios y nosotros, y entre nosotros. El amor es gracia
precisamente porque Dios lo da gratuitamente sin condición y sin mérito. Al igual que nuestra vida misma,
somos agraciados con el amor de Dios y somos sostenidos por el amor que recibimos unos de otros. Por lo
tanto, podemos decir fácilmente que el amor es el significado y la alegría de la vida. Por el contrario, sin
amor no conocemos la alegría y el sentido de la vida.
¿Cómo nos ama Jesús? Es dándonos y sacrificando su vida por nosotros. El verdadero amor no es egoísta
sino entrega. Experimentamos este amor especialmente de nuestros padres y otras personas importantes en
la vida. Se elige amar a su cónyuge entregándose totalmente en el sacramento del santo matrimonio.
“El matrimonio ayuda a superar el ensimismamiento, el egoísmo, la búsqueda del propio placer y a abrirse al
otro, a la ayuda mutua y a la entrega” (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica 410). De eso se trata la intimidad y la
comunión, o la unidad, convertirse en un solo cuerpo. Intimidad significa compartir todo con el otro,
completamente abierto; una vida orientada el uno al otro, entregándose al otro. Esto es lo opuesto a nuestra
cultura popular o incluso a nuestro instinto. Pero aprendemos a salir de nuestras preocupaciones egoístas, a
entregarnos a los demás y, en última instancia, aprendemos a entregarnos a Dios. Ese es el auténtico
crecimiento y desarrollo humano. El individualismo radical acompañado de un materialismo desenfrenado y
de consumismo, que aflige a nuestra época, es como una inmadurez perpetua. Entonces, tratamos de
decirnos a nosotros mismos: ¡Crezcamos!
La gracia del matrimonio cristiano es fruto de la cruz de Cristo, fuente de toda la vida cristiana. Entonces, el
pacto matrimonial será verdaderamente una relación redentora y salvadora, no solo entre ellos sino con los
demás. Que cada uno de nosotros sea una bendición para los demás, en lugar de ser una carga y un
problema. La vida es una invitación y una llamada; la vida es una respuesta a esa llamada. Sí, la vida es una
aventura. Una aventura para liberarnos de nuestro egoísmo para entrar en la vida de comunión, una vida en
relación de amor con Dios y entre nosotros. Oremos para que Dios continúe librándonos de nuestro
individualismo, la prisión del egoísmo y el pecado.
Oremos por todos los casados y por todos los matrimonios para que Cristo sea el centro de sus hogares,
mostrando el camino hacia la verdadera felicidad. ¡Que el Espíritu Santo sea un vínculo constante de amor y
un fuego insaciable que supere la frialdad de la desesperación! Que imiten el corazón generoso de Dios
Padre para que sean generosos al aceptarse, perdonarse y amarse unos a otros, a sus hijos y familias
numerosas.
