PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE The Ephiphany of the Lord, January 3rd, 2021 They opened their treasures Happy New Year to you all! It is my prayer that the blessings of God will be showered upon you like the dewfall in 2021. I invoke on you again the blessings of God through Aar- on to the Israelites: “The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord let his face shine upon you and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!” (Numbers 6:24-26). This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. Epiphany is from the Greek epiphaneia meaning appearance, manifestation. This feast highlights the revela- tion of Jesus and his saving mission to the Gentiles and the whole human race. Christ did not come for the Jews only, he came to save the whole world. This explains why the Magi came from the East to pay homage to the newborn King. In fact, King Herod did not know what was going on in his own territory until the Magi told him. The historical identity of the magi is not very clear. Some see them as astrologers from the East, probably Babylonia, others described them as wise men or kings. An early eastern tradition said that there were twelve of them, but a more universal tradition says there were three of them. The idea of three wise men came from the threefold gifts presented to Jesus, as we read in today’s gospel. The Magi opened their treasures and offered the infant Jesus the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts have significant meanings. Gold is the gift for a king reminding us that Jesus Christ is King not only of the Jews but of the whole world. The gift of Frankincense, used by the priest in burnt offerings, shows Jesus as the perfect priest who will offer himself as the lamb of sacrifice on the cross for our sins. The gift of Myrrh, used to embalm dead bodies or made into a perfume to anoint dead bodies, showed that Christ is to die for the world. In the second reading, Paul speaks of the purpose of God’s revelation to us in Jesus Christ: “that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” We who have received this revelation from God must pass it on to others. To bring everything under Christ, we must like the Magi seek him every day, come into his presence with thanksgiving in our hearts, and worship his majesty. Thank You: Fr. Augustine and I are grateful to you, our dear parishioners, for your Christmas cards, gifts, and wishes. We appreciate your prayers and thoughtfulness. They are sources of strength for us. This was Fr. Au- gustine’s first Christmas in the parish, and he is full of gratitude for your sense of faith and love for God. Special thanks to the various volunteers and lay ministers who helped with decorations, preparations, and celebra- tion of the liturgies. We thank our children who acted the gospel and showed us the symbols of Christmas at the Children’s Mass on the eve of Christmas. It was beautiful and it shows that our faith remains alive despite the pandemic. We pray that the pandemic will soon come to end, and we will be able to worship as normal again. Exodus 90: This is a 90-day Catholic spiritual exercise for men that provides a path to freedom through prayer, asceticism, and fraternity. It begins on January 4th and will end on Easter Day. There is a special blessing at 11:00 AM Mass today for those who have signed up. You can join by visiting www.exodus90.com Steps for Students: The Annual Steps for Students 5K Run/Walk to support Catholic schools in our archdiocese will be virtual this year.
