seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter... Dear Parishioners, On this 20th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks, I recall the words of Pope Francis when he visited the Ground Zero Memorial in New York, five years ago: O God of love, compassion, and healing, we ask you in your goodness to give eternal light and peace to all who died here. The heroic first responders: our fire fighters, police officers, emergency service workers, and Port Authority personnel, along with all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service brought them here on September 11, 2001. We are mindful of those who suffered death, injury, and loss on that same day at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Today, the Divine Word Missionaries, who are particularly devoted to Bible education, have missions in 70 countries around the world. There are 4,150 SVD priests, and 6,016 SVD brothers. seek, share, rejoice - church history... The Divine Word Missionaries train young men for the priesthood at Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa, and at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. The SVD priests and brothers retire to Techny after their years of service in the foreign missions have been completed. Loyola Academy The Society of Jesus was founded by Saint Ignatius Loyola in 1540, and is today the largest religious order of men in the world, with 11,049 priests and 15,306 brothers. They are known as the Jesuits. In 1857, Fr. Arnold Damen, S.J., (also a Dutchman like Saint Arnold Janssen) founded Holy Family Church in Chicago for the growing immigrant population of Catholics. In 1869, OLPH's Sr. Paulanne Held was presented with the Rev. Daniel A. Lord, SJ, Award for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Youth from he founded St. Ignatius College next to Holy Family. seek, share, rejoice - religious education... Take a Leap of Faith; Be a Catechist! A big, big thank you to 5 OLPH parishioners for stepping up last week to help us in our need for more Catechists: Jacquie O’Brien, Lazlo Koszeghy, Mike Jehle, Holly Jehle, and Joe Conlon. We are so happy that you have joined our Religious Education Ministry! We still need YOU to fill 4 more catechist openings on Tuesdays at 4:30: one for kindergarten/4- years-old preschool; 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 4th grade. We provide you with all the prayers, tools, and resources that you need to teach the children and grow in your own faith. Below are a couple testimonies from our current catechists. Hopefully, their testimony will tug at your heart and encourage you to say, “YES!” and serve the Lord and our OLPH parish community. Bridget Hussey – Catechist for Preschool 4-years-old and Kindergarten My faith has always been a part of my life, and I’ve been going to church since I was a young child. But as I’m sure happened to a lot of people my age, I lost a little bit of that special connection I had with the Church due to the pandemic. Of course, things closed and I became so busy with school I thought I didn’t have time for God. Now, as the Church is opening back up, I wanted to take the time to rebuild that connection by not only educating myself, but to also educate young kids. I get to spread our faith and help kindergartners see what life is all about. So, I’m taking these next few months to become closer with God and help more people along the way. To me, this will be a very eye-opening opportunity I look forward to sharing with Lucy and all the other catechists. Monica Cassidy – Catechist for 6th Grade It has been on my mind and heart for many years to become a RE teacher at OLPH. Last year I stopped making excuses and decided to act on the idea. I just completed my first year of RE teaching in May and the experience was overwhelmingly positive. First of all, the RE office had all the leg work done for me. Lesson plans, internet supports, and other resources were at my fingertips. Training modules were available for classroom management. However, the best part of teaching was the students! It was a joy to share my faith with these young people, who were polite and inquisitive. I am very much looking forward to getting started this year! Please visit our OLPH RE website: www.olphre.org for ongoing information for Catechists and RE Families. Keep praying for one another and our Church! Blessings!
