The Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Pentecost November 15, 2020, 11:15am TRINITY CHURCH Broadway at Wall Street New York City God of the covenant, even when we fall into sin, your Spirit invites us to remember that you chose us to be your servant people. Awaken us to the power and gifts you pour into us for the good of creation, and grant that we may be trustworthy in all things, producing abundantly as we work to build your realm. Amen. RCLP p. 213
Mission In the spirit of the Gospels, the mission of Trinity Church Wall Street is to build generations of faithful leadership, to build up neighborhoods, and to build financial capacity for holy service in New York City and around the world. Our mission is grounded in our core values. Vision We seek to serve and heal the world by building neighborhoods that live gospel truths, generations of faithful leaders, and sustainable communities. Core Values Faith Compassion “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a “When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move had compassion on them and healed their sick.” from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing —Matthew 14:14 Social Justice will be impossible for you.” —Matthew 17:20 Integrity “He has showed you what is good; and what the Lord “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is requires of you: to do justice, and to love kindness honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, and to walk humbly with your God.” whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is —Micah 6:8 Stewardship any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” —Philippians 4:8 “There will come seven years of great plenty Inclusiveness throughout all the land of Egypt. After them there “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither will arise seven years of famine, and all the plenty slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; the famine you are all one in Christ Jesus.” —Galatians 3:28 will consume the world.” —Genesis 41:29-30 Core Values guide us in carrying out our mission and realizing our vision. By their nature, core values are touchstones for prayer, discernment, ongoing conversation, and action. We seek a deep understanding and ongoing engagement with Trinity’s Core Values. Over the years, we will continue reflecting on what our Core Values mean in their application; how they challenge and inform decisions and actions in Trinity’s ministries, and how they help our ministries be aligned with our mission and vision. 2
Welcome to Trinity Church Please add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus’ Table, and everyone’s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God’s love in Christ. If you would like to learn more about The Episcopal Church, or how you can become a member of Trinity Church, please visit www.trinitywallstreet.org/membership. About this Service The Season after Pentecost Our current liturgical season, the Season after Pentecost, is by far the longest of the Episcopal church year. It begins the day after Pentecost and ends the day before the First Sunday of Advent. Since the date of Easter changes every year—and the Day of Pentecost is always 50 days after Easter—the length of the season varies as well, ranging from 24-29 weeks in length. This season is sometimes called Ordinary Time, a phrase borrowed from the Roman Catholic Church. A common practice among Episcopal churches is to change the appropriate liturgical elements at the start of each new season. Often these changes are directed by the Book of Common Prayer, such as the acclamations named for use in the Lenten and Easter seasons. However, liturgical leaders also decide which Prayers of the People, Eucharistic Prayer, blessing, and dismissal are used in services. The Liturgy of the Word The First Reading Judges 4:1–7 Read by Jack Smith IV Reader A Reading from the Book of Judges. The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, after Ehud died. So the Lord sold them into the hand of King Jabin of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-ha-goiim. Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron, and had oppressed the Israelites cruelly twenty years. At that time Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel. She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came up to her for judgment. She sent and summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, “The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you, ‘Go, take position at Mount Tabor, bringing ten thousand from the tribe of Naphtali and the tribe of Zebulun. I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin’s army, to meet you by the Wadi Kishon with his chariots and his troops; and I will give him into your hand.’ ” Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. The Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11 Read by Deborah Hope Reader A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God. 8

The Holy Gospel Matthew 25:14–30 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Deacon Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven will be as when a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ ” The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Clayton Crawley Silence follows the sermon. 10

All Amen. Confession and Absolution BCP p. 360 Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving EOW p. 57/BCP p. 361/p. 377 Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, Holy, Holy Hymnal S 125 Music: from A Community Mass; Richard Proulx (1937-2010) 16
Please continue standing or kneel as you are able. Celebrant Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Celebrant Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. All AMEN. 17
The Lord’s Prayer BCP p. 364 Celebrant As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Fraction The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. Fraction Anthem Hymnal S 167, v. 1 All sing the antiphon. The Cantor alone sings the verse. Music: Mode 6 melody; adapt. Mason Martens (1933-1991) Invitation BCP p. 364 Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. 18
A Prayer for Spiritual Communion SAPB p. 145, adapted In the Episcopal tradition, we believe that when circumstances make it impossible to consume the Eucharistic elements, our desire is enough for God to grant all the benefits of communion. Leader I invite all those who are unable to receive the consecrated bread and wine this day, but who long for the grace and blessing of God through our Savior Jesus Christ, to join me in this Prayer for Spiritual Communion: People In union, Blessed Jesus, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I offer my praise and thanksgiving. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen. Please be seated. Communion Anthem Sed tu, Domine William Byrd (1539/40-1623) Sed tu, Domine, qui non derelinquis sperantes in te, consolare et adjuva me propter nomen sanctum tuum, et miserere mei. But thou, O Lord, who dost not forsake those whose hope is in thee, comfort and help me for thy holy name’s sake, and have mercy on me. —Cantiones Sacrae, 1589 19
Concluding Rite Post-Communion Prayer EOW p. 70 Please stand as you are able. Celebrant Let us pray. All Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people, forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. The Blessing CW:TS p. 631, adapted Celebrant May God, who spoke the world into being, give you grace to be wise stewards of creation; may the Son, who redeemed the world, inspire you to go out as laborers into the harvest; and may the Holy Spirit, whose breath fills the whole of creation, help you to bear fruits of love, joy, and peace. And the blessing of God—creating, redeeming, and sustaining— be among you and remain with you always. All Amen. 20
