Sunday Bulletin – 12th April 2020 EASTER SUNDAY Dear Cathedralites Welcome to the pinnacle of Holy Week. In this combined bulletin and service outline you will find both a Good Friday service as well as the Easter Sunday service. I’m thrilled that more and more people are watching it either directly on livestreaming or later on. It was nice to hear from Janice and Ray Evans, who until recently have been worshipping with us at the cathedral where Janice has been singing in the choir, but they are now back in England for their summer and they tuned in to our service last Sunday. Also joining are Bob and Adrienne Marryatt who are now living in Australia. The Good Friday cross stands in splendid isolation just outside the cathedral at present covered in wire. It is a depressing site representing that of Good Friday. However, my hope is that by Easter Sunday there it would be transformed into a living Cross of colour, of expectation, of hope and of life. My original intent was to invite all those living near to the cathedral who often come for a walk into the cathedral grounds and part of their legitimate exercise to bring a flower from home and place it on the wire netting of the Cross. My prayer then would be that others who take a walk around the cathedral grounds would see that great symbol, and that the Holy Spirit would stir their hearts and that they will become followers of Jesus. However, it seems my hope of that has been dashed. I have been told I must not encourage this for fear of spreading the Coronavirus. Never-the-less, I will do all I can to ensure the Cross is somehow covered in flowers. This morning you will see a new addition in the cathedral. It will seem a long way off, bearing in mind the view of livestreaming. Thanks to David Coombs, Teresa’s husband, we have a brand-new tomb scene. On Good Friday you will observe the stone covering the entrance and then on Easter Day Patsy will roll the stone away to expose the empty tomb. Thanks to John Laing, our children’s worker who also inspired this new addition. After all the Cross and the tomb go hand in hand. We will miss the Good Friday drama scene with the re-enactment of the Cross. It culminates in our pilgrimage down to the cathedral steps at the head of Trafalgar Street. However, we can still enjoy our hot cross buns as usually. 1
I follow my mum and dad’s footsteps by heating the buns, (which have to be the original spiced variety) cut an apple and cheese and eating all three together! It is a wonderful combination and a treat for the taste buds. Why not try it? We will not need any encouragement to eat a number of hollow Easter eggs on Sunday. The hollowness reminds us of the empty tomb. A neighbour complained to me the other day that he had not heard the cathedral bells being rung. Although they rarely come, they miss the wonderful sounding bells. So, to that end on Easter Sunday at 9:50 am I will be ringing with great gusto the bells to signal the resurrection of Christ. Sean o’ Connor is keen that Christians in Nelson fly the Christian flag by putting Christian symbols in our windows, writing Bible verses on our pathways in chalk. I totally agree that in this time of community shutdown, Christians in the church should become more visible not less. May this be a very, very special Easter, an unforgettable one, considering the present circumstances. In His service, Mike PRAYER Almighty God, our Father in heaven. Thank you for all your loving care and great generosity. We ask your help for people troubled by Corona virus. Comfort the bereaved. Heal those who are ill. Help those who care for the sick. Guide those seeking a remedy. Give wisdom to our leaders. In our own need we also remember the millions in the world suffering from other causes - starvation – disease – war and strife. Bring all needy people to know your love and to turn to you. May we remember that your love for us is greater than the sky is above the earth. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen 2|Page 2

Ours, however, is only right, for we are getting what we deserve for what we did; but he has done no wrong." And he said to Jesus, "Remember me, Jesus, when you come as King!" Good Friday poem He borrowed a bed to lay his head When Christ the Lord came down; They borrowed the ass in the mountain pass For Him to ride to town; All But the Crown that he wore and the Cross that he bore Were His own He borrowed the bread when the crowd He fed on the grass mountain side; He borrowed the dish of broken fish With which he satisfied; All But the Crown that he wore and the Cross that he bore Were his own He borrowed the ship in which to sit To talk to the multitude; He borrowed the nest in which to rest, He had never a home so crude; All But the Crown that he wore and the Cross that he bore Were his own Hymn CP 127 1 When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. 2 See from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down; did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? Prayers Father of mercies and God of love, in his last word from the cross your Son and our Saviour committed his spirit into your hands. We today would do the same. In your hands alone we are secure: there is no other place where we would be. And so, our Father, receive us now, as into your hands we commit ourselves, our souls and bodies, in life and in death, for time and for eternity. Lord Jesus Christ, crucified for us, we kneel at the foot of your cross to watch with you. Help us to see the cost of our forgiveness so that we may be made new through your love. Crucified Saviour, naked God, you hung disgraced and powerless. Grieving, we dare to hope, as we wait at the Cross with your mother and your friend. Final song ‘On a hill faraway’ 1 On a hill faraway stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suff’ring and shame; and I loved that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain. So, I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it some day for a crown... 2 O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, has a wondrous attraction for me: for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above to bear it to dark Calvary. So, I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it some day for a crown... 9|Page

The Invitation and the Confession Hear God's word to all who turn to Christ: God has promised forgiveness to all who truly repent, turn to Christ in faith and are themselves forgiving. In silence we call to mind our sins. Let us confess our sins. All Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, In the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in ignorance: we have sinned in weakness: we have sinned through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and turn to you. Forgive us, for our Saviour Christ’s sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen. The Absolution is pronounced by the Dean Through the cross of Christ, God have mercy on you, pardon you and set you free. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. Prayers Dear friends in Christ, today we recall the passing of our Lord Jesus Christ form death to life. This is the Passover of the Lord. We honour the memory of his death and resurrection by hearing his word, by rededicating our lives to him and by celebrating his mysteries, so we may be confident that we shall share his victory over death and live with him for ever in God. Father we share in the light of your glory through your Son, the light of the world. Make this new fire holy, and inflame us with new hope. Purify our minds by this Easter celebration, and bring us one day to the feast of Eternal Light. We ask this through Christ our Lord. We affirm our faith in the words of the Apostle’s Creed All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Offertory hymn CP 147 1 Jesus Christ is risen to-day, Alleluia! our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! 2 Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia! who endured the Cross and grave, Alleluia! sinners to redeem and save, Alleluia! Lyra Davidica The Great Thanksgiving The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise. 18 | P a g e
It is right indeed, always and everywhere, to give thanks to you, the true and living God, through Jesus Christ. You are the source of life for all creation and you made us in your own image. In your love for us you sent your Son to be our Saviour. Lifted high upon the cross, He drew the whole world to Himself; the tree of shame became the tree of glory. Where life was lost, their life has been restored. In the fullness of time he became incarnate, and suffered death on the cross. You raised him in triumph, and exalted him in glory. Through him you send your Holy Spirit upon your church and made us your people. And so, we proclaim your glory, as we say: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest. To you indeed be glory, almighty God, because on the night before he died, your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when he had given you thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper he took the cup, when he had given you thanks, he gave it to them and said: This cup is the new covenant in my blood poured out for you; do this as often as you drink it to remember me. All Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come in glory. Therefore, loving God, recalling now Christ’s death and resurrection, we ask you to accept this our sacrifice of praise. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and our celebration, that we may be fed with the body and blood of your Son and be filled with your life and goodness. Strengthen us to do your work, and to be your body in the world. Unite us in Christ and give us your peace. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit to be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen 19 | P a g e
The Communion Dean We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen. Prayer after Communion Dean Almighty God, giver of all good things, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the precious body and blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. We thank you for your love and care in assuring us of your gift of eternal life and uniting us with the blessed company of all faithful people. All Therefore, everliving God, keep us steadfast in your holy fellowship. And now we offer ourselves, all that we have and are, to serve you faithfully in the world, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Blessing Notices Our final Hymn CP 160 1 Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. 2 Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. 20 | P a g e

NOTICES ISOLATION NOT ISOLATED Our daily lives certainly have been different over the last 2 weeks. One of the best things we can do is to tune into the simple things that help us feel good. We are strongest when we look after ourselves and others and there are many ways we can reach out to loved ones, be kind and have fun at home. New resources announced by the Prime Minister on Tuesday have been developed especially for this time and can be found at: https://www.allright.org.nz/campaigns/getting-through-together https://www.mentalhealth.org.nz/get-help/covid-19/ Some ideas to connect include: writing emails that share a favourite memory, playing online scrabble or other board games, devise a quiz on themes that interest the participants, sharing a favourite poem or reading, with your friends on social media, having video catch-ups with workmates, calling friends, whānau, or neighbours who are in self-isolation. I’m enjoying the little video clips of my grand daughters’ activities. Notice the beauty in the world around your home. Take time to feel the sun on your skin, breathe in fresh air, (especially with so few cars and planes in action), make a list of what you’re grateful for, take the time to thank someone for how they make you feel. We know activity is a tricky one without gyms or sports, but it can be done! Play ‘the floor is lava’ with the kids, do a yoga class online, try out a new workout on YouTube, go for walks or runs outside (just stay 2m away from others!). Give compliments, think about a skill you have you could share with your family/flatmates/friends, share a favourite recipe, let people know you’re there to help. Check in on neighbours and members of your community who may need to hear a cheery voice or need a helping hand (but observing the guidelines). Staying curious and engaging with the world around you, is a great way to uplift your wellbeing. Pick a question you’ve always wondered about and take time to look it up. Call your parents or grandparents. Ask them questions about life when they were young. Research your whakapapa or family tree. Download free charts off the NZSG website. ‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God goes with you wherever you go.’ Joshua 1: 9 Blessings Judith 23 | P a g e
L.E.A.P. Children’s Ministry Hi everyone, I hope you are all well and coping with the shutdown. I’ve been keeping busy with producing videos and searching out activity sheets and children's animated Bible stories for the LEAP children stuck at home and have been loading them onto my YouTube channel for viewing. Some years ago, a colleague in the para-church organization I'm connected to, gave me a ventriloquist doll which I have called "Archie" Archie helps me to introduce the topic for each week's theme. As we all know its Easter and never is there a better time than now to explain to the children the real reason we celebrate. This week I wore a surgical mask while talking to "Archie" explaining to him and the children that we all have a deadly virus and it's not COVID19 one living within but that it's the sin virus that we have inherited from Adam and Eve and that only Dr. Jesus can cure us so that we can be welcomed into His family and not be "Locked down and isolated!" Truly the wonderful heart of the Easter narrative. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever should believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 Blessings John Laing Children's Ministry Worker Christ Church Cathedral 24 | P a g e
Report back Here at Oakwoods, the villa residents are not allowed to mix with the residents of the rest home or hospital. There is a caravan at the entrance to the village and everyone entering has to have their temperature taken and if it is over 38, they are not allowed in the village. We used to be able to go for a walk outside the village but that has been stopped. We had to have our temperature taken as well on entering. We are not allowed to go grocery shopping. Our daughter gets our groceries and she delivers them to us. We meet at the entrance where she places the bags on the footpath and stands back and then we go and pick them up. The management have set up online grocery shopping. A booking is made with the receptionist and a villager can sit with her and go through the website and order what is wanted. Fresh Choice deliver the groceries the following day, but they can only do 12 separate orders per day. There is fresh milk and bread at reception in an emergency. We are allowed to go out to attend medical appointments. The management and staff have been brilliant. We get regular newssheets on what is happening. The manager has moved into the village while lockdown is on. He regular interacts with everyone. Although it is a nuisance here as anywhere at this time, we are so lucky to have so much back up. PASSION FRIDAY I kneel in sorrow I cry in anguish I feel your hurts I have experienced peaks of pain The desolation of despair I have been submerged in sorrow. But you were inflicted With piercing points of pain As each cruel nail pounded Through flesh and bone To impale you helpless to public contempt And your blood dripped down To stain the earth Marks that remind us always Of your sacrifice. You ached in agony When the weight on your arms Stretched you in tearing torture You were subjected to excessive indignities Made to suffer the searing slashes of whips to feel the spikes of a thorny crown Embed themselves in your head In degradation of your Kingship. The intensity of your grief Is incomprehensible to me You cried out to God for release Yet knowing you had to go through it all to the end Even then your love overwhelmed as you forgave your fellow- sufferers How petty, how trivial Are my turmoils and ordeals Which are concerned with saving self. They are insignificant compared With what you endured For the salvation of us all. Thank you for a wonderful service last Sunday morning; this was the first time that I have gone onto the livestreaming for the Cathedral services. It seemed odd sitting at my desktop computer so I could watch, listen and join in the prayers and hymns. Unfortunately, I have had a cold for over four weeks and finally getting over it, so my voice was a bit croaky due to lack of practice! Anyway, there was no-one to listen to me as I am alone in my own wee bubble high up on the hill, no cat or dog to scare either! The sound was very good and thank you to whoever sets this up so we Cathedralites can join in on Sunday mornings – I was a bit worried that I didn’t have the communion wine and wafers at home to join in the communion with you both but thought it better not to open a bottle of wine this early in the day! Will save that for tonight with dinner. Thank you also to the team of people phoning around the congregation so that no-one is left out; there are a lot of lonely people in our country and made more so by this lock-down we are in at present. However, I am very mindful that this is a short time in our lives even though people think it is hard and are not used to being at home all day with families, small children and teenagers who can’t go to school but I think of the terrible conditions that a lot of the world live in, the little children in the war-torn countries watching soldiers, bombs, guns and other artillery all around them, wondering if they will live longer than today. Then there are the millions in other poor countries where there is not enough food to go around and people dying of starvation and malnutrition in their hundreds of thousands every day. I feel we are very lucky in New Zealand to have fresh air, clean water, sunshine, plenty of food and law and order and this lock-down hopefully has brought it home to many that there are a lot of people world-wide who are far less fortunate than we are. My parents, when bringing up four daughters, would get very angry if we left anything on our plates or wasted good food – think of the starving children around the world they would say and that was many, many years ago. When you are small and you live in your own wee world, poverty, malnutrition and a basic desire to survive in horrendous situations, is hard to imagine but it certainly exists. The world is still a very unsettled place indeed. I hope that we all learn something from this virus and locked-down situation and think of others before ourselves, and rid the world of these capitalistic, selfish societies that seem to have taken over in many instances. Hopefully our prayers we said today will help those less fortunate than ourselves. Kind regards Barbara Gordon 28 | P a g e
Dear Patsy and Mike, We have just celebrated Palm Sunday with you from our sitting room in South London, UK. Because of the different time zone, you are no doubt still tucked up in bed, but we have used the services as our Evensong. It was very poignant to see the empty choir stall where I usually stand but wonderful to hear the organ played by Patsy and the familiar words read and spoken by Mike. We sang along with gusto, acted our parts in the drama and listened with interest to the address - as you will no doubt agree, Janice is an activist through and through! We have just bought a 43’’ TV especially to use as a screen for viewing You Tube, Netflix, Royal Opera House free screenings et al in these times of Lockdown. You were very large and loud here! We are feeling uplifted by the service and thankful to be part of the family of Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson, no matter our social distancing of 21,000 kms! Blessings to you both from the other side of the world. Janice and Ray Evans South London, UK 29 | P a g e

Wellbeing tips to help you feel good and get through Find ways to stay connected • He waka eke noa – we’re all in this together. Remember you are not alone, it’s important that physical isolation doesn’t lead to social isolation. Stay connected with the people who are important to you on the phone, through social media, video chats or text. • Self-isolation doesn’t mean cutting off all communication - in fact, it’s more important than ever to talk and listen, share stories and advice, and stay in touch with the people who matter to you. • Organise a virtual coffee or lunch with your friends or schedule a daily phone call with an elderly relative or neighbour. Do things that make you feel good • Prioritise looking after your body and mind – we know what makes us feel good and what doesn’t. • Remember what worked for you in previous times of stress and try to recreate and repeat those feel-good factors. Get into healthy habits. • At times of crisis it’s important to give our minds and bodies what they need to stay healthy – good food, plenty sleep, fun, exercise, mindfulness, music, relaxation, reading, nature, laughter, space, gratitude – whatever works for you. Keep moving • Exercise helps your mind and body to release tension and stress; it energises you by releasing feel-good endorphins. • Find ways to move your body and your mood every day. • You can still go outside for a walk, run or cycle, as long as you stay in your ‘bubble’. Find ways and space to relax • Relaxation is especially important if you’re feeling stressed or anxious; finding things that help you breathe deeply, switch off and recharge will make you feel better. • Breathing deeply and slowly for just 60 seconds will help you feel calm. • It’s important to have a relaxing space to be in. If you can’t create a physical space use your imagination to create ‘headspace’. 31 | P a g e
Be generous – think about what you can do for others • Giving helps us feel valued and connected – think about ways you can give your time, skills and knowledge to help others. • Assist other others who might need help and reach out to people who are alone. • Text a compliment to someone, share a recipe or book recommendation on social media, or call someone who might be feeling lonely. Stick to a routine • We cope better with stress when our lives have structure – routines keep us healthy. • When our usual routines are upset, it’s important to create new ones. • Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, eat regularly, shower, change your clothes, get some fresh air, book in video-chats with colleagues or friends, do your chores and make sure you make time for fun. Moderate your consumption of (bad) news • COVID-19 is a global issue and the endless updates from news outlets and people on social media can be overwhelming. • Notice how you feel and switch off when you need to. • Get important information from reliable sources such as the Unite against COVID-19 website. Remember all the good things in life that aren’t being reported! If you’re struggling and need to talk However, if you’re struggling and need to talk, free call or text 1737 to have a chat with a trained counsellor. It is a myth that asking people about suicide might put the idea in their head to try it. Asking and talking about suicidal thoughts in a supportive and non-judgmental way can support suicidal people to open up and seek help. Ask them clear and direct questions about how they are feeling, and whether they are thinking about taking their life. If they say 32 | P a g e
yes reassure them that you will support them and help them to identify and access the professional support they need. If you are interested in learning more about how to support people who may be feeling suicidal, there is a free online training course available on the LifeKeepers website. If someone is putting themselves or others in immediate danger, call 111 for assistance. If you are having suicidal thoughts, please don’t suffer in silence. Seek the support of trusted family members or friends and use the free services referred to above. Every life matters and help is available. Taking care of children There may be children or young people in your life who experience distress. As a trusted adult, you can help reassure and educate them about COVID-19 – it can be good to talk to them now, so they can understand the illness and be reassured. If you feel the child or young person is getting distressed through this conversation, reassure them and end it. Children react to stress differently than adults – they may withdraw or behave in a more ‘babyish’ way, seem anxious or clingy, be preoccupied with illness in their play or drawing, have problems sleeping or nightmares, or may get physical symptoms such as stomach aches or headaches. Tips for supporting children and young people • Reassure them they are safe. • Encourage them to talk about how they feel. • Tell them they can ask questions and answer these in plain language appropriate to their age – be honest but avoid details that may distress or cause anxiety. • Tell them that feeling upset or afraid is normal, that it’s good to talk about it and that they’ll feel better soon. • Be understanding – they may have problems sleeping, throw tantrums or wet the bed – be patient and reassuring if this happens. With support and care, it will pass. • Give your children extra love and attention. • Remember that children look to their parents to feel safe and to know how to respond – reassure them, share that you are upset too but that you know you will all be fine together. • Try to keep to normal routines – mealtimes, bedtimes etc – allow them to burn off their energy. However, if a child’s distress is escalating or they are displaying any worrying behaviours (such as extreme withdrawal, terror that you cannot comfort them from), seek help early. Call or text 1737 to talk with a trained counsellor for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We’re all in this 33 | P a g e together
