Dear Parishioners,
This weekend, we will start with THE GOSPEL OF MARK, the author who is also named Mark,
was a disciple of Peter and became his interpreter during his preaching in Rome. Both Peter and
Paul mentioned him in their writings. Mark did not see the Lord face to face and had no
personal encounter with him, but Peter’s preaching was his primary source of information. The
Gospel is believed to be the earliest written account, closest to the resurrection between 60-67
A.D., set and located within the Roman Empire near Jerusalem. Certainly, this was written
before Matthew and Luke, because it became available to the two evangelists. Because of the
proximity of the events to the resurrection, there was not much deep theological thinking
involved. Possibly, what the author wanted to share, with joy and enthusiasm, was the story
itself. It seemed the community was in terrible crisis with great exposure to suffering and
persecution. Members of the community were probably discouraged because of the ongoing
threats to both life and faith. Maybe, some of them gave up while others chose martyrdom.
Considering the manner and the tone, the author was much concerned with gentile mission and
territory. That means, it sounded like it was a break from the past tradition. In recent decades,
there was a lot of interest in the three gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke which became the
subject of Biblical research, and came to be known as the synoptic problem, because of their
similarities and differences. A Gospel is a narrative telling the story of the life, ministry, death,
and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, proclaiming the Good News that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God. The third Sunday of January has been designated as SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF
GOD.
CONGRATULATIONS TO PRESIDENT JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR. as the second Catholic to occupy the
highest seat in the land, the leader of the free world and the most influential secular leader on
the planet. He wears his faith on his sleeve. He attended Mass at the Cathedral of St. Michael
the Apostle before the Inauguration, quoted St. Augustine and cited bible verses in his Inaugural
speech.

Queridos feligreses,
Este fin de semana, comenzaremos con EL EVANGELIO DE MARCOS cuyo autor llamado Marcos
fue discípulo de Pedro y se convirtió en su intérprete durante su predicación en Roma. Tanto
Pedro como Pablo lo mencionaron en sus escritos. Marcos no veía al Señor cara a cara y no tenía
ningún encuentro personal con él, pero la predicación de Pedro era su principal fuente de
información. Se cree que el Evangelio es el primer relato escrito cercano a la resurrección entre
el año 60-67 d.C. establecido y ubicado dentro del Imperio Romano cerca de Jerusalén.
Ciertamente, esto fue escrito antes de Mateo y Lucas porque se puso a disposición de los dos
evangelistas. Debido a la proximidad a los acontecimientos de la resurrección, no había mucho
pensamiento teológico involucrado. Posiblemente, lo que el autor quería compartir con alegría y
entusiasmo era la historia en sí. Parecía que la comunidad estaba en terrible crisis con gran
exposición al sufrimiento y a la persecución. Los miembros de la comunidad probablemente se
desalentaron debido a las continuas amenazas a la vida y a la fe. Tal vez, algunos de ellos se

Jesús es el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios. El tercer domingo de enero ha sido llamado DOMINGO DE LA
PALABRA DE DIOS.

HOMILY ON THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B The calling of the first disciples Simon and Andrew, James and John as recounted in the gospel of Mark is one of the most exhilarating vocation stories. Once again, we are reminded of a familiar biblical call narrative pattern regarding the ordinaries of the nature of the call whereby the caller passes by, calls people and the recipient drops everything and follows. God’s call is an invitation to participate in proclamation and build-up of the kingdom. When Jesus saw the two brothers, he said, “Come after me and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately became his followers and walked behind him. Their mission (our mission now) was to become fishers of people. Quite surprisingly, he did not ask them to sit down and learn. The first lesson was learning the new way of being together which means that the top priority is the renewal of community life, the bottom line of any religious teaching. They followed him wher- ever he went, in adversities, in successes and failures, in joys and sorrows through the rapidly changing circumstances of their lives. A famous Latin reminds me, “Sentire Cum Ecclesia (Think With the Church)”. Don’t leave her. Follow the church wherever she goes amidst all the hard and harsh realities of faith. Community living was greatly emphasized to strengthen their bond and set their focus straight in preparation for the rigorous demands along with the constant changes of life’s situation. He called them against their former way of life and standard of living. He called them contrary to their own personal plans, hopes, dreams and goals in life. What has changed in your life since you followed Jesus? What has transformed in you? Whether you are a new- comer or cradle Catholic, when you make that ongoing decision, little by little, something has changed in your interior life. If you start and end the day with spiritual exercises, you become more patient, understanding, compassionate, and peaceful. The opening verses lead us deeper into our vocation, “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and Believe in the gospel”. Although it sounds scary and appears to be loaded and highly intimidating, it is an inviting phrase, a soothing verse and a welcoming gesture. Understandably, every time we hear it, we often ask, what did I do wrong? Am I in trouble? Is there something I missed or failed to do? Of course, not. What you have been waiting for that is, the arrival of God’s kingdom and rule is coming shortly, right here, right now, God joyfully and lovingly welcomes and heals us. If God asks us to turn back to him with all our hearts and think outside of our minds, that’s not a problem un- less there is something wrong in you. Repentance is not something to be feared. It has to be openly welcomed. Step aside and consider divine life if you haven’t done so. Some take years if not a life- time to finally accept the invitation and drop the nets while others respond quicker and faster. What is God calling you to do? Why is it difficult to answer the call?
HOMILY ON THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B Accordingly, the calling took place at the sea of Galilee when they were busy with their daily busi- ness of commercial fishing. God interrupted their routine which usually happened to biblical fig- ures. The response from the stranger was unreal. They immediately abandoned their nets and fol- lowed him! It was a prompt and radical obedience. It was immediate. That said, God’s call is urgent. It is highly important. It was a complete and permanent change of lifestyle all for the sake of the kingdom of God which was almost unthinkable in the affairs of the modern era: leaving family and resignation from work is unpractical nowadays although that still happens. They must have seen something extraordinary. What have you given up for God? What are you willing to give up for God? For the first disciples, there was no hesitation, no discussion and no questions at all. It was an immediate abandonment of their cherished occupation and dearly beloved family. The first disci- ples became Jesus’ closest bonds to the extend that they followed him all the way to the cross in spite of all the troubles faced. Simon and Andrew and James suffered martyrdom while John, the longest-lived disciple, authored the Johannine Literature and tradition. These disciples who later became apostles (to be sent) were the unknown and the nobodies. They lacked talent and skills. They had neither clout nor influence in the state of affairs which provides lots of inspiration in our ministries. What would have happened if they said no? It would have been a totally different sce- nario. . If we decline the invitation, there is going to be a void, an emptiness that not even God can fill in a parish community. No one knows but God needs us because we have an irreplaceable role in the church.

REFLEXION
REFLEXION DE LAS LECTURAS DEL III DOMINGO ORDINARIO. B
La primera Lectura (Jonás 3,1-5.10) del libro de Jonás, nos presenta la historia en la que
el profeta recibe de Dios el mandato de predicar en Nínive de los asirios, el castigo
inminente por sus pecados. Este libro posiblemente fue escrito después del exilio en
tiempos de Esdras y Nehemías, Nínive era la capital del imperio Asirio comandado por el
rey Senaquerib, y por tanto un símbolo del imperio que destruyó el reino del norte de
Israel.
El autor expone una historia con fundamento teológico para llamar a todos los gobiernos
opresores a arrepentirse y salvarse del castigo de Dios. El mensaje de Jonás, es también
para el pueblo de Israel, quien piensa que Dios debe castigar, sin mostrar misericordia.
Pero al igual que Dios, el pueblo de Israel, debe estar abierto a perdonar a sus enemigos.
En la segunda lectura (1ª Corintios 7,29-31), con tinte escatológico, San Pablo urge a los
creyentes de Corinto, a no vivir apegados a las cosas de este mundo. Es una invitación a
darle a cada cosa su valor. San Pablo instruye a su comunidad sobre el valor del tiempo.
Cuando dice que “el tiempo es corto”, se refiere a la segunda venida de Jesús. Los esta
animando a aprovechar el Kairós de manera provechosa, Es un tiempo de gracia que Dios
en su infinita misericordia nos está concediendo. Esto significa vivir nuestro Kairós, como
el tiempo oportuno en nuestra salvación. La apariencia de este mundo es pasajera, y lo
efímero desaparece. Para San Pablo lo importante es, que todo lo que hagamos, debe
estar orientado a construir el reino de Cristo. Podemos vivir, pero sin depender de lo
pasajero de este mundo. Podemos disfrutar de las cosas del mundo de una manera
desapegada a lo mundano, recordando que estamos en el mundo, pero no pertenecemos
a este mundo. Al hacer uso de las cosas que este mundo nos ofrece, no debemos aceptar
sus antivalores, que se hacen pasar por valores, que se oponen al reino de Dios.
El Evangelio de hoy (Marcos 1,14-20), se divide en dos secciones. La primera (vv.14-15),
es una síntesis de la actividad misionera de Jesús iniciando en Galilea: El anuncio del
reino, invitando a la conversión y abrazando la fe en Jesús. Jesús anuncia la Buena Nueva
(Evangelium). El tiempo se ha acortado, el reino de Dios ha comenzado. El tiempo de la
salvación viene manifestado a través de señales milagrosas: curaciones, liberaciones y
conversiones. Para poder experimentar el reino que Jesús anuncia, es necesario
arrepentirse del pecado y volver a Dios. La metanoia, implica un cambio de mentalidad,
sentimientos y de acciones. Por tanto, se necesita de la fe en Cristo, como nuestro
salvador, para dejar el pecado y abrazar la gracia que Dios ofrece.
La segunda sección del evangelio es sobre la llamada de Jesús a sus primeros discípulos
(vv.16-20). Jesús los invita a formar comunidad, a ser testigos y anunciadores del reino de
Dios. La comunidad de discípulos que forma con sus primeros apóstoles, vivirá la
experiencia fraterna en unión con Cristo, comprometiéndose a anunciar los valores reino
de Dios. Estos cuatro discípulos tenían algunas cosas en común: a) vivían en Cafarnaún,
b) eran pescadores y trabajaban en el mar de Galilea, c) podríamos decir que pertenecían
a la clase media de su entorno, d) habían sido discípulos de San Juan Bautista (Jn 1, 35-
42), e) conocían a Jesús.
R E F L E X I O N. . .2
Eran personas con personalidades diferentes. Por ejemplo: Pedro era impetuoso, llegando
a ser el líder de los doce apóstoles. Andrés se caracterizaba por llevar a otros hacia Jesús,
siendo el primero en conocer a Jesús. Santiago y su hermano Juan, llamados hijos del
trueno, reflejaban el temperamento de su padre. Eran ambiciosos buscando los primeros
puestos. Santiago fue el primero en dar su vida por Cristo. Juan es conocido por ser el
discípulo amado. Se observa que eran personas comunes y sencillas. Cuando Jesús llama
formalmente a Pedro y Andrés, Santiago y Juan, ya se conocían y posiblemente existía
una amistad entre ellos. También, acompañado a Jesús al inicio de su ministerio, habían
sido testigos a algunos de sus milagros.
Jesús se acercó a Pedro y Andrés, en la orilla del lago, donde estaban echando las redes.
Estaban en plena actividad laboral. Solo bastó unas cuantas palabras: Vengan y síganme,
que yo los haré pescadores de hombres. Sus vidas no habían sido hechas para ser
solamente pescadores de peces. Dios necesitaba de sus talentos para tirar las redes
espirituales y salvar almas del mar del pecado. El llamado es personal y requiere una
respuesta personal. Ante esta llamada, Jesús siempre toma la iniciativa de salir a buscar a
los que Él quiere que lo sigan para trabajar en la salvación de las almas. El evangelio dice,
que “dejando las redes lo siguieron”. Fue una llamada sencilla que requería de una
respuesta sencilla. Las acciones hablan más que las palabras. Mas adelante vio Jesús a
Santiago y a Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, remendando las redes, y los llamó. Ellos dejando a
su padre y las redes, lo siguieron. Como Pedro y Andrés, Santiago y Juan, dejaron lo mas
preciado en sus vidas y se fueron con Jesús.
La vocación de los primeros discípulos de Jesús, es un modelo de llamamiento para cada
cristiano de hoy. Dios se hace presente en nuestras vidas, viene a buscarnos y nos invita a
dejar todo lo que no nos deja ser libres para seguir a Jesús. Esa invitación ven y sígueme,
resuena constantemente en nuestros corazones. Dios nos anima a amarlo sobre todas las
cosas y mostrar ese amor puro y santo en nuestras palabras, pensamientos, deseos,
sentimientos y acciones. En el estilo de vida al que fuimos llamados a vivir en plenitud,
todos tenemos una misión. Dios nos invita primero a formar comunidad, viviendo en
familia. Esa comunidad puede ser en tu casa, tus familiares, compañeros de trabajo,
amigos y nuevas personas que Dios quiere integrar a tu vida. Nos llama a vivir los valores
del reino de Dios, y hacernos también pescadores de almas, para Dios. Hay mucha
necesidad de anunciar el evangelio de Cristo, la Buena Nueva de Salvación, empezando
en la familia con un autentico testimonio de vida cristiana. Practicando las virtudes
cristianas y los valores del reino. ¿Como respondemos a este llamado de Jesús que nos
dice: “ven y sígueme”?

As you are aware, the number of Coronavirus cases in Douglas and around our state is rapidly
rising, making it necessary to once again amend Church protocol and in certain areas mirror Phase
1, except where indicated; in effect and moving forward until further notice.
Daily Masses and Sunday Masses...remain private and live-streamed. Holy Communion is
distributed after Sunday Masses, outside, for those who viewed the live-streamed Mass.
Appointments with Priests...In-person appointments with our priests will be limited, so in
consideration for our priests, staffs and the situation we are facing, be prudent and do not
come to the office if there is not a reason worthy of your visit. If there still remains a need to
speak with a priest, virtual appointments are highly encouraged. Remember that all
appointments must be made through the parish offices.
Parish Offices...are completely closed until further notice.
Funerals and Weddings...allow 25 total people in attendance

paperwork is complete, a date for Baptism will be given.
• CHANGE: Baptism will be administered at St. Luke on the 2nd
Wednesday of each month in English & the 4th Wednesday of each
month in Spanish.
• No more than 10 people allowed in Church to witness the
Baptism.

With the end of 2020 fast approaching and income tax becoming a reality,
if you are in need of a tax donation letter
to support your contributions, please call your parish office to request a letter.
When you call, kindly advise the ladies of your choice to either pick up
your letter, which will be placed in the mailbox, or have your letter mailed to you.
We are navigating through the COVID-19 surge in new cases, and adhering to new protocol
from the Diocese of Tucson, so we hope you

supporting us and our mission. In November we were very blessed to receive over 300 turkey dinners, from
Safeway stores in Tucson, which were distributed on November 16, 17 and 18. We are grateful to Tim and Alison
Vigil who provided transportation to Tucson to pick up the dinners and then they helped in delivering them to our
SVdP hall as well as Haven Health of Douglas and the American Legion. Meals were provided to House of Hope,
Cypress Inn and House of Esther to ensure our brothers and sisters in assisted living facilities and safe houses had a
Thanksgiving meal. We also assisted the American Legion in distributing their drive up Thanksgiving dinners. It was
a joy to participate with them and we hope to do the same next year.
We are in need of non-perishable food for our food pantry. We need unsweetened breakfast cereal, oatmeal,
peanut butter, canned vegetables, canned soup, canned meats, spaghetti, shelf-stable milk, powdered milk,
macaroni & cheese, flour and sugar. We are most grateful if you are able to assist in any way to address our food
needs.
We want to recognize Mr. John Behrens for supporting us by delivering bread which we are using in our lunch
program and distributing in our food bank. We continue to rely of the generosity of all who support the Society of
St. Vincent de Paul as we serve the most vulnerable in our community. If you would like to become a member of
the Society of St. Vincent de Paul or volunteer please stop by at 543 G Avenue or call 364-7573.

La institución de Inmaculada Concepción/San Lucas de San Vicente de Paúl da las gracias a todos los que nos
apoyan generosamente en nuestra misión. En noviembre tuvimos la bendición de recibir más de 300 cenas de
pavo, de las tiendas Safeway en Tucson, que se distribuyeron los días 16, 17 y 18 de noviembre. Estamos
agradecidos a Tim y Alison Vigil que proporcionaron transporte a Tucson para recoger las cenas y luego ayudaron

beginning with those in Sacramental preparation—First Holy
Communion, grades 2 & 3; and Confirmation, grades 7& 8.

Registrations will be completed by phone when you receive your call.
Classes will be conducted online or in a printed format to be completed at home.
