LAETARE SUNDAY – Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Lent. It is traditionally called “Laetare Sunday” and derives its Latin name from the first word of the Introit text, "Laetare Jerusalem" (Rejoice, O Jerusalem). It is a day of joy within the mourning season. The altars may be decorated with flowers, the organ my be played solo, not just to sustain the singing), and the priests wear rose-colored vestments instead of purple. The reason for such display of joy is explained in a sermon by Pope Innocent III (1216): "On this Sunday, which marks the middle of Lent, a measure of consoling relaxation is provided, so that the faithful may not break down under the severe strain of Lenten fast but may continue to bear the restrictions with a refreshed and easier heart." This “midway” point in Lent is a good time for us to examine the Lenten resolutions we made back on Ash Wednesday and see if we have been faithful to them. It’s a time to renew those resolutions. Next Sunday you will notice a dramatic change in the church environment. All the statues as well as the crucifixes will be covered with purple cloth. The Fifth Sunday of Lent begins the last part of Lent which is called Passiontide. It includes the last full week of Lent (5th week) and Holy Week In ancient times many of the crosses in churches were "gemmatae," that is, covered with jewels and without a corpus (body) or with a corpus of the risen Savior, a sign of the resurrection. These crosses were covered during Passiontide to help people meditate more on the sufferings of Jesus. If the crosses were covered, it was thought necessary to cover also all the other pictures and statues. In the course of years, especially influenced by Franciscan spirituality in the 13th century, the cross "evolved" and most crosses were crucifixes, vividly showing the death of Christ. However, the "covering custom" continued. The veil on the crucifix is removed during the Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday while the coverings of the statues are removed at the singing of the “Gloria” at the Easter Vigil. LET’S GO PAPERLESS! – One of the things that last year's shutdown made very real is the need for us to give our tithes to the parish via electronic giving. Electronic giving is a tremendous convenience for our parishioners as well as for the parish. Many parishes throughout the country and in our own Archdiocese have long ago switched to electronic giving in an effort to get rid of the old fashioned checks and cash. The pandemic shutdown actually made it absolutely imperative that as many people as possible switch to this form of giving and many of our parishioners have done so. If you have not yet signed up, please do so at: www.standrewpasadena.org and click on the "donate" button. LENTEN REMINDERS – As part of Lent, please remember that we have the Stations of the Cross devotion each week. We pray the Stations each Friday of Lent at 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in English and at 7:00 pm in Spanish. The English Stations in the evening are concluded with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. We also have Confessions 3 times per week: Tuesdays during the 7:00 p.m. Holy Hour and Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Please take advantage of this opportunity to cleanse your soul and receive the grace of the Sacrament of Penance.
SOLEMNITY OF ST. JOSEPH ON A LENTEN FRIDAY MEANS NO ABSTINENCE! – Church law states that the regulations on abstinence from meat on Fridays of Lent are relaxed when a Solemnity is celebrated. That happens this coming Friday, March 19th as it is the Solemnity of St. Joseph. We will celebrate his feast day more solemnly this year as it falls during the special Year of St. Joseph. So enjoy a more joyous Friday in Lent! DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT OUR MUSIC? – One of the comments I found humorous from the recent survey was that "we're not singing much anymore." The reason I found it humorous is that, officially, we're not supposed to be singing at all! The regulations from the County of Los Angeles actually state that we're not supposed to be singing during the pandemic. This is the reason also why the chant cards, hymnals and missalettes had to be removed from the pews. Music is technically allowed by the instrumentalist and cantor but, naturally, our people sing along with those chants and hymns that they know by heart. I think this is beautiful. I look forward to the day when we can all sing again! I also recommend reading the weekly column which our Music Director writes in our bulletin. He always offers excellent background on the Sunday Liturgy and what the Church actually teaches regarding liturgical music. In Christ and St. Andrew, Fr. Gonzalez

It highlights God’s mercies in choosing of the Gospel accounts of the temptation of Jesus.
