SUCCESSFUL PARISH MISSION - Our parish mission conducted by Fr. Serge Probst, O.P. last week was quite successful. We had particularly good attendance at both the morning and evening conferences and a lot of our parishioners took advantage of receiving the Sacrament of Confession. This was a grace filled week! May we now extend the graces of the mission through the rest of Lent and going forward. IT'S BEEN A YEAR! - It was in the bulletin of March 8, 2020 that I announced to you new precautions which were instituted in response to the Coronavirus infections. A year ago, is when we were instructed by the Archdiocese to discontinue practices such as Communion from the cup and the Sign of Peace. It was only a week later that we were shut down entirely. What a sad situation that was! Yes, it has been a difficult 12 months but at least now we see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it is getting brighter. Some liturgical practices may never return while others will be back at some future point. But, thankfully, we are back inside the church with a full schedule and our parishioners can avail themselves of the Sacraments. HOLY WEEK WILL LOOK DIFFERENT- I have been getting a few questions about how we are going to celebrate Holy Week this year. The first thing to remember is: we are going to have Holy Week! Thank God! Last year, for the first time ever, we were unable to celebrate the beautiful days of Holy Week publicly. It all had to be done via livestream with an empty church. This was terribly sad and unprecedented but Holy Week came in the midst of the total lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This year we are back in church and, thankfully, the virus cases are falling dramatically, and hospitalizations are way down. All this is good news. However, we are still under quite a few restrictions in our worship such as the wearing of masks, social distancing, and sanitation procedures. We have received guidance from the Archdiocese regarding the liturgical celebrations. So, while we will celebrate the beautiful Holy Week liturgies with all their due solemnity, some restrictions are in place. We cannot have processions, the washing of the feet, kissing of the cross, etc. Obviously, we will miss these practices, but we will still be able to worship. As with the ash distribution on Ash Wednesday, we will adapt. STATIONS OF THE CROSS ON FRIDAYS – One of the most beautiful of Lenten practices is the Way of the Cross. Our Stations of the Cross each Friday will be at 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in English and 7:00 p.m. in Spanish. At the end of the English Stations in the evening we will have Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The Spanish Stations will take place after the evening Mass. Come and pray this beautiful devotion with your parish family. Please join us for devotion. Ordinarily, we would also have our Lenten Soup Suppers each Friday. Sadly, we are not able to do so this year due to the County of Los Angeles restrictions due to the pandemic. God willing, next year we will return to this practice. OUR PARISH SCHOOL IS OPEN! - This past Monday, March 1st, our students in grades TK - 6th returned to in-person instruction for 4 days a week from Monday - Thursday. Up until now, we had been operating at 2 days of in-person instruction a week. Pre-Kinder for 3- or 4-year-olds has been open since September. Slots are still available for those ages for this year or the upcoming year. One of the great blessings in our parish is our school which has been here since 1897. The church and school are united in our effort to provide the best private Catholic Education to the members of our St. Andrew Community and wider Pasadena area. Applicants for the upcoming or present school year may apply for registration. We are conducting flexible in- person or virtual tours for families. Scholarships are available for those families with financial need. Please email the school at info@saspasadena.com or call (626) 796-7697
ALTAR SERVERS - Since we have a lot of new families with children, I want to take this opportunity to remind you that if you have a son in grades 3 and up, he is eligible to become an Altar Server. We have ongoing training for new Altar Servers. If you are interested in enrolling your son, please stop by the Pastoral Center to fill out a registration form. You will be notified by our Altar Server Coordinator regarding the training dates. Serving at the altar is a tremendous privilege for a child. It allows him to: - develop a closer relationship with God - have a better understanding of the Mass - learn reverence and discipline - learn to have a spirit of cooperation with others - get to know the parish priests and consider a priestly or Religious vocation - overcome shyness and fear of being “in front of others” The way I like to think of service at the altar is to remember the Last Supper. Our Lord was there with the Apostles. However, there were others who were there as well and who assisted: those who prepared the meal, those who served it and those who cleaned up. What a privilege it must have been for them to be so close to Our Lord and the Apostles and serve them on such a momentous night! In a similar way, our Altar Servers are those who serve Our Lord in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and are so close to the Holy of Holies. Let us encourage our children to take part in this “most beautiful thing this side of Heaven.” PARKING AT ST. ANDREW'S - Most of our parishioners are aware of the parking procedures in our large parking lot. However, since we have had a rather large influx of new families in the parish, I thought it would be good to review the information for you again. Shortly before the beginning of the pandemic and subsequent shutdown (March 2020), I had announced the changes and the management of our parking lot. It became irrelevant as soon as everything shut down since no one was coming to church, so the parking lot was empty. Now, however, the situation is different. We have been back to a full schedule in church since December 20, 2020. Prior to the pandemic, our large parking lot was a rather "chaotic" place. The flow of cars was difficult, people would park there who were not coming to church, the parking spots were inefficient, etc. After discussion with the members of our Parish Finance Council as well as other parishioners and experts in parking lot management, we contracted the services of Diamond Parking services in April 2020. This is a local Pasadena company which has expertise in managing church parking lots as well as numerous businesses in the city of Pasadena. What this means is the following: - If you are coming to attend church services, visiting the Pastoral Center or Parish School you will not be required to pay at all. - All others, however, are required to pay at the kiosk which is found in the center of the lot. So, there is no free parking for those who simply use our lot to visit Old Town, live or work nearby, etc. - Diamond parking personnel monitor the lot at all times, and they are responsible for its maintenance. There have been a couple of times when parishioners received a ticket by mistake. In that case you simply contact Diamond Parking Services at 626-304-3001 and they will remove the ticket. If there are any difficulties, please contact our Pastoral Center and it will be taken care of. Thank you for your cooperation! In Christ and St. Andrew, Fr. Gonzalez

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: Third Sunday of Lent March 7, 2021 Oculi mei semper ad Dominum, quia ipse evellet de laqueo pedes meos: respice in me, et miserere mei, quoniam unicus et pauper sum ego. Ps. My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for He shall pluck my feet out of the snare: look Thou upon me, and have mercy on me, for I am alone and poor. Psalm verse: I put to you, O Lord my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame. Recall that the Introit is the prescribed entrance chant for Masses on a given day, and it comes from the Roman Gradual, the official songbook of the Catholic Church. In this week’s Introit, sung in Latin at Mass but given in translation here so that we may better comprehend it, we hear the prayer of the faithful: my eyes are ever toward the Lord, who will save us in our time of trial. We trust God to save us and to preserve us from shame. In the first reading, we hear the giving of the Decalogue, or “Ten Commandments.” These rules, imposed by God on the Israelites, who God had just delivered from bondage in Egypt, are guides by which a free people are to live. In the phraseology of George Weigel, official biographer of Pope St. John Paul II, the Ten Commandments are less a prison than a set of tools for the recently-freed People of God: tools that guide their lives so they don’t have to act like slaves anymore. Slaves to what? To sin. To self-will. To food and drink. To lust. To greed. In fact, slaves to a variety of idols: slaves to anything that takes them (and us) away from God’s will. It is these words that we find not only the way to joy in this world (and what greater joy—joy, not mere happiness—is there in this world but to do the will of God?) but also the everlasting joy of heaven; and so it is not without reason the psalm was chosen which says: Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. These words—more precious than anything earthly—lead us to Jesus, the Word Incarnate, who saves us. It is with this in mind that the psalm leads naturally to the second reading, which makes clear Jesus’s place in this context: above all signs (things perceptible to the senses) at the Jews of the time looked for; and above all wisdom (things comprehensible by the mind) that the Greeks looked for; is Christ crucified: the ultimate Sacrifice for all mankind, confounding all human sense and thought and action, the act beyond human effort which alone saves us. In this context we can read the Gospel with understanding: Jesus cleansed the temple in Jerusalem, the House of God; in so doing, he draws an analogy to the temple that is his body, and which he prophesies will be torn down and raised up in three days, though the listeners did not understand him. We are also told, elsewhere in scripture, that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit; as such, Jesus, in the ruthless cleansing of the temple in Jerusalem, calls us to similarly clean out the temple of our own bodies and lives, and cling to the commandments of God, that we may be found worthy of life everlasting. And so, in the words of today’s opening hymn: In prayer together let us fall and cry for mercy, one and all, And weep before the Judge’s feet, and his avenging wrath entreat.

¡Gracias a Dios!
