SONG OF PRAISE • HYMN 207 vv. 1 & 4 Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Easter Hymn Brass parts by Gerry Senechal Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as his love, Alleluia! Praise him, all ye heavenly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia! THE COLLECT OF EASTER DAY BCP, p. 222 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please be seated. FIRST READING Isaiah 65:17-25 I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I am creating; for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord - and their descendants as well. Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent - its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4
PSALM 118:1–2, 14–24 Chant by H.G. Ley GPS I will give thanks to You, for You an - swered me, and have be - come my sal - va - tion. 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures for ever. 2 Let Israel now proclaim, “His mercy endures for ever.” 14 The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. 15 There is a sound of exultation and victory in the tents of the righteous: Response 16 “The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! the right hand of the Lord is exalted! the right hand of the Lord has triumphed!” 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. 18 The Lord has punished me sorely, but he did not hand me over to death. 19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them I will offer thanks to the Lord. Response 20 “This is the gate of the Lord; he who is righteous may enter.” 21 I will give thanks to you, for you answered me and have become my salvation. 22 The same stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 On this day the Lord has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Response SECOND READING 1 Peter 1:3-9 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. 5

Glory to you, Lord Christ. On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” Then they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE SERMON The Rev. Colin Ambrose Please stand, as you are able, for the Creed. THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 6
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE, FORM IV BCP, p. 388 Let us pray for the Church and for the world. Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. We ask for guidance for those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for God’s people and equip us for our ministries, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. We pray especially for the conflict in Ukraine. We also pray for those serving in the armed forces. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. You are invited to add your own intercessions and thanksgivings, either silently or aloud. Silence is kept. The celebrant prays the concluding Collect and the people respond Amen. 7
THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. THE HOLY COMMUNION Please be seated. THE OFFERTORY Light’s glittering morn bedecks the sky Horatio W. Parker Soloists: Rebekah Alexander, Emily Hinkle, Joshua Lindsey, and Michael Colavita Light’s glittering morn bedecks the sky; O Jesu, King of gentleness Heav’n thunders forth its victor cry; Do Thou Thyself our hearts possess; The glad earth shouts her triumph high, That we may give Thee all our days, And groaning hell makes wild reply, The tribute of our grateful praise. While He the King, the mighty King, Despoiling death of all its sting, The strife is o’er, the battle done, And trampling down the powers of might, The victory of life is won, Brings forth His ransomed Saints to light. The song of triumph has begun. Light’s glittering morn bedecks the sky; O Lord of all with us abide, Heav’n thunders forth its victor cry. In this our joyful Eastertide; From ev’ry weapon death can wield, That Eastertide with joy was bright, Thine own redeemed for ever shield. The sun shone out with fairer light, Alleluia. Amen. When to their longing eyes restor’d Th’Apostles saw their risen Lord: All praise be Thine, O risen Lord, He bade them see His hands, His side, From death to endless life restored, Where yet the glorious wounds abide; All praise to God, the Father be, These tokens true which made it plain And Holy Ghost eternally. Their Lord indeed was risen again. Alleluia. Amen. Please stand, as you are able. THE FESTIVAL DOXOLOGY Lasst uns erfreuen 8
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer B BCP, p. 367 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; but chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, holy, holy (Hymnal S128) Mathias Please kneel or remain standing, as you are able. We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; 9
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD & THE FRACTION ANTHEM BCP, p. 364 Christ our Passover (Hymnal S155) Near The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. Notes on Receiving Communion All baptized Christians are invited to receive the sacrament, regardless of age or denomination. Those who have not been baptized are welcome to a blessing—indicate your desire for a blessing by crossing your arms over your chest. Gluten-free wafers are available at the side station. After receiving communion, those who desire it may go to the Chapel for healing prayer. MUSIC DURING COMMUNION ANTHEM • O sacrum convivium Thomas Tallis O sacrum convivium, O sacred banquet, in quo Christus sumitur; wherein Christ is received; recolitur memoria passionis ejus; the memorial of his passion is renewed; mens impletur gratia; the soul is filled with grace; et futurae gloriae and a pledge of future glory nobis pignus datur. is given to us. 10
ANTHEM • Now the green blade riseth arr. Simon Lindley Now the green blade riseth, from the buried grain, Wheat that in dark earth many days has lain; Love lives again, that with the dead has been: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green. In the grave they laid him, Love whom men had slain, Thinking that never he would wake again, Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green. Forth he came at Easter, like the risen grain, He that for three days in the grave had lain; Quick from the dead my risen Lord is seen: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green. When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain, Thy touch can call us back to life again, Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green. Please kneel, as you are able. THE POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER BCP, p. 366 Let us pray. Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. THE BLESSING May Almighty God, who has redeemed us and made us his children through the resurrection of his Son our Lord, bestow upon you the riches of his blessing. Amen. May God, who through the water of baptism has raised us from sin into newness of life, make you holy and worthy to be united with Christ for ever. Amen. May God, who has brought us out of bondage to sin into true and lasting freedom in the Redeemer, bring you to your eternal inheritance. Amen. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen. 11

Tell it out with joyful voice: he has burst his three days’ prison; let the whole wide earth rejoice: death is conquered, we are free Christ has won the victory. Come, ye sad and fearful hearted, with glad smile and radiant brow! Death’s long shadows have departed; Jesus’ woes are over now and the passion that he bore sin and pain can vex no more. Come, with high and holy hymning, hail our Lord’s triumphant day; not one darksome cloud is dimming yonder glorious morning ray, breaking o’er the purple east, symbol of our Easter feast. He is risen, he is risen! He hath opened heaven’s gate: we are free from sin’s dark prison, risen to a holier state; and a brighter Easter beam on our longing eyes shall stream. THE DISMISSAL Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. Alleluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia. CLOSING VOLUNTARY 'Toccata' from Symphony V C.M. Widor 12

ART NOTE The detail of Christ from The Ascension (as seen on the cover) features him robed in gold and seated in a blue orb lifted by winged angels. The Rev. John Howard Walstead painted icons such as this work using techniques that combined the traditional with the modern. His style of iconography most closely resembles a technique from the 14th through 16th centuries featuring bold composition, large amounts of gold leaf, and the use of cinnabar, a bright reddish orange pigment made from ground mercury ore mixed with sulphur. He also made his own paints from ground mineral pigments suspended in egg yolk, which acts as a binding medium. Layers of different pigments —from dark to light—create the effects of shading, draped garments, and skin colors. The resulting image seems to radiate light from within, representing the light of God breaking through the darkness. The colors used in iconography also express specific meanings: gold represents Christ and the divine, uncreated light of God himself, and blue represents the heavenly Kingdom of God. This icon was presented to St. George’s by parishioners in honor of the Rt. Rev. Bertram Nelson Herlong in 2008. It is currently on display in the Nave. [‘The Ascension’ (2005) by the Rev. John Howard Walstead (1932-2014).
