Formation A Gospel Reflection In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus brings up the topic of the cross to his followers. They would not realize the cross was part of God’s plan and was to be their legacy until after the Resurrection. Today’s followers of Christ recognize they are stewards of his entire legacy, including his cross; that through their mutual sacrifices God’s glory is revealed. They don’t live their lives in Christ only when it is convenient for them. They make a decision to take up their cross and carry it, no matter what the cost. In the midst of the uncertain times we live in, what crosses do we bear in order to reveal God’s glory? We were grateful for Congratulations to Megan Everett, his visit to our parish. See more photos at www.popcatholic.org. POP’s formation director, who was just awarded a Master of Divinity degree from Loyola University Institute of Pastoral Studies. The Master of Divinity is a comprehensive degree designed to meet the educational needs of persons called to professional ministerial leadership. Megan completed the degree over the course of several years in their online program and, due to the pandemic, graduated virtually on August 8, 2020. Although Loyola is a Jesuit university, all faiths are welcome in this master’s degree program. “The discussions were very rich and fulfilling because of the varied faith backgrounds of my classmates,” said Megan. She added, “Providing pastoral care is a huge part of my job as director of formation at Prince of Peace and this degree definitely deepened and broadened my theological and pastoral knowledge.” As director of formation, Megan created POP's first special education religious education program in 2008. It's one of few individualized religious special education programs that offers both full inclusion and individual learning in the Diocese of Birmingham. It serves 11 students from ages 6-17. In addition, she manages all of the faith formation programs offered to children and adults at POP. Last year, 1,085 children were enrolled in POP's formation programs across the parish’s English and Spanish-speaking communities. Megan also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts and Master of Education degree from Indiana University and a Masters of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University Chicago. Prior to joining Prince of Peace in 2007, she was assistant principal at Holy Family Cristo Rey High School, taught high school, and developed assessment and testing programs for the Indiana Department of Education. She has also served on the Alabama Interagency Autism Coordinating Council. Megan lives in Helena with her daughter Bailey and son Kenny. Prince of Peace Catholic Parish | August 30, 2020 | Page 7
