My dear Parishioners,
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! The second Sunday of May is dedicated to all mothers, living, and
deceased, to honor and show our appreciation to the woman who carried us in her womb and
beyond. Motherhood is priceless. Although this is a secular celebration which may have
religious roots, it is fitting to incorporate this day in the Sunday Liturgy; to recognize the role of
mothers and their contribution in shaping us, our families and society. The word “carrying” best
describes and marks Motherhood. We thank our mothers for the gift of motherhood, for the gift
of childbearing and rearing and for carrying us. There is an intimate connection which we call a
maternal bond between the child in the womb and the mother carrying the unborn infant. The
carrying does not end after giving birth. The responsibility goes further. The prophet Isaiah
penned a profound comparison between God’s love and a Mother’s love in the following verse,
“Even if a mother forgets her child, I will not forget you” (Isaiah 49: 15). This analogy shows the
depths of a mother’s love. There is a deep sense of belongingness and ownership. You are my
own. You are a precious gift from God. No one can take you away from me. I carried you in my
body, in my womb for nine months. You will always be mine. It goes through life, from
conception even to death. Motherhood is about “carrying”. We express our sympathy to all
the mothers who have lost children and join in solidarity with those who struggle with infertili-
ty.

Loving God,
As a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over
your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as
Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.
Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always
with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Queridos Feligreses,
¡FELIZ DÍA DE LAS MADRES! El segundo domingo de mayo está dedicado a todas las madres,
especialmente las que se encuentran con nosotros y quienes ya han fallecido. Las honramos y
mostramos nuestro agradecimiento, a Ella, la mujer que nos llevó en su vientre y más allá. La
maternidad no tiene precio. Aunque se trata de una celebración secular que puede tener raíces
religiosas, es oportuno incorporar este día en la liturgia dominical; reconocer el papel de las ma-
dres y su contribución en la formación de nosotros, nuestras familias y la sociedad. La palabra
"cargar" describe y marca mejor la maternidad. Agradecemos a nuestras madres por el don de
la maternidad, la crianza y por llevarnos siempre en su corazón. Hay una conexión íntima que
llamamos vínculo materno, es el niño dentro del vientre de la madre quien lo carga hasta nacer.
El cargar al bebé dentro del vientre materno, no termina después de dar a luz. La responsabili-
dad va más allá. El profeta Isaías escribió una profunda comparación entre el amor de Dios y el
amor de una Madre en el siguiente versículo: "Aunque una madre olvidase a su hijo, Yo, no te
olvidaré" (Isaías 49:15). Esta analogía muestra las profundidades del amor de una madre. Hay
un profundo sentido de pertenencia y propiedad. Tú eres mío. Eres un regalo precioso de Dios.
Nadie puede alejarte de mí. Te llevé dentro de mí, en mi vientre durante nueve meses. Siempre
serás mío. Por toda la vida, desde la concepción hasta la muerte. La maternidad se trata de
"Cargar". Expresamos nuestras condolencias a todas las madres que han perdido hijos y nos soli-
darizamos con aquellos que luchan contra la infertilidad.

Concédenos que nosotros, sus hijos e hijas, podamos honrarlas siempre,
con un espíritu de profundo respeto. Concédenos lo que te pedimos por Jesucristo, nuestro

HOMILY FOR GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY / 4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER, C
The Good Shepherd is one of the most striking and lovely images of Jesus. There is no image
more inviting and comforting in a human way than the Good Shepherd holding a tiny lamb, or the
sight surrounded by his flock in the countryside. On Good Shepherd Sunday, we imitate the exam-
ple of Jesus leading the flock and throw ourselves into his arms, on his shoulders like a sheep. To be
on the shoulders of the Good Shepherd is the most delightful moment. Your choice. It is not either
or. You can do both. I personally prefer to jump in the shoulders of the Good Shepherd and see my-
self being carried, safe and protected in his loving arms. We don’t mind doing this because we
know the Good Shepherd loves us to death. It is about time to entrust and hand over our troubles
and worries to the reassuring promise and gentle touch of the Good Shepherd and let him take
care, guide, and protect us with tender loving care. All we have to is listen to his voice, follow him,
and go where he goes.
Although many of us familiar with the Shepherd and sheep (flock) dynamics, it will help if we
once again spend some time. We know that sheep is often described as meek, dull, and dumb. It
doesn’t sound encouraging nor inspiring perhaps, because that is not something we aim for in life.
We don’t want to be labelled and known as passive followers that need to be told all the time.
Sheep don’t reason out. They follow you where you go. This is their mantra, “Show me the way and
I will follow you”. They can easily be bullied by wild animals who prey on them. They can wander in
the field aimlessly and be lost in the ravine without no one noticing it. Although sheep are not very
smart, they would only follow the Shepherd’s voice and will only follow that person and no one
else. This description slowly leads us to what it means to believe and follow Jesus. The sheep trust
the Shepherd. They are willing to be led and have no issues with that. They have no problem being
guided and protected by the shepherd because they know the shepherd’s love is genuine.
To be a shepherd is a risky business. Shepherding is a dangerous job. Since you are out in the
field all day and always on the lookout, you can hardly relax. No one can lead a flock at a distance.
No one can shepherd remotely and expect success at all fronts. You must be there at the site. The
primary role of a shepherd is to protect the sheep from outside threats that is, from wolves and
predators. A shepherd is not afraid to rout evil and confront danger. If a shepherd sees and senses
that something is wrong (or is not right), he acts on it immediately and not wait until things get
worse. It is no surprise that Jesus called himself, “I am the gate”. As a shepherd, if your flock know
you care for them, you probably have accomplished half of your responsibility.
Let us look at the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles 13: 14, 43-52 (story of the early
church). Paul and Barnabas, examples of true and genuine shepherding, were so brave to turn to
the Gentiles. Many of them followed Paul and Barnabas because of the marvelous things shown.
In fact, the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. I have made you a light to the
Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth. The second reading
from the book of Revelation presents a vision of the heavenly realm, “For the Lamb who is in the
center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water and God will
wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Rev. 7: 17).
John devotes most of chapter 10 of the fourth gospel to the Good Shepherd discourse. This
year, the assigned text, however short, is found towards the end of the pericope, John 10: 27-30
along with the Jewish Festival of Dedication (Hanukkah) commemorating the rededication of the
temple following the victory of the Maccabean revolt.

In this episode, faith as in all narratives, is a necessary and essential component for understanding
Jesus. What I mean by faith is the assent - the act of the will and not the intellect. You can read and
memorize the biblical texts cover to cover and quote church’s teachings by memory and yet, have
no faith. There is a difference as the assent “I believe” requires no further explanation and proof.
When someone says, I believe, it is because the individual knows that love alone is credible. That’s
the Good Shepherd.
The gospel begins with a loaded phrase, “My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they
follow me” (John 10: 26-27). Shepherd and the sheep have personal relationships. Business
relationships may start in a formal corporate setting but eventually, in the course of human
interaction and trust, personal lives will be shared. The more we know God, the more we are drawn
to him. If we are hard wired to his voice, we find time to listen and squeeze in our schedule prayer
time. It is sad that some of us rush to the parking lot before the Mass ends. I don’t know what
drives people away from the church that quick after an hour of prayer and worship. If someone
needs to go and must attend to something important, that’s understandable. But if not, is there
something wrong with the Mass? Did it ever have any impact on the worshippers? Sheep would
never follow a stranger. Those who are in tune with God don’t mind the time at all. Nowadays, peo-
ple listen to different voices. To recognize the voice of Jesus, there is only one criterion that is, to
start listening to it. To listen attentively well, requires focus. There is a need to shut off other voices
to avoid distraction and noise. Jesus’ voice is distinctive. You can almost identify which one is
true and correct and which is not. No one can take them out of my hand. Because of the pow-
er of human freedom, which is highly desirable, we are the ones who break away and separate
from the Shepherd because we choose not to be governed and led.
“I give them eternal life and they shall never perish” (John 10: 28). Religion, by its nature,
dealing with things immaterial, can easily be dismissed and ignored with the comfort of life. And
yet, what it offers, is eternal life. An authentic believer hears and is heavily invested for eternity.
He is not rattled by outside forces. True followers are not rattled by outside forces. They won’t let
themselves be swayed and snatched away from the life the Good Shepherd gives. It is a life
incomparable with all the earthly temporal treasures combined. They know full well that the
temporary and the eternal are two separate things. In this life, we are preoccupied with the
attainment of success, fulfilment of dreams and visions, leaving a legacy, and making a name for
ourselves. Jesus gives something that the worldly things cannot that is, the joy and happiness of
the inner life, peace, and security. Above all, faith, and belief in the transcendental that there is life
after death and that we are mere creatures, dependent, mortal, limited, but also, redeemed,
blessed and graced.
This Sunday is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. It is a special time to prayer for ordained
ministers (priesthood and diaconate), consecrated life and secular institutes. Let me end this
reflection with the Opening Prayer: Almighty ever-living God lead us to share in the life of heaven,
so that the humble flock may reach where the brave Shepherd has gone before. Amen.

R E F L E X I Ó N. . . Primera Lectura (Hch 13, 14. 43-52) Hechos 13, 1 a 14, 28 narra el primer viaje misionero de Pablo y Bernabé. En el evangelio de San Lucas, en este viaje misionero de Pablo y Bernabé a Chipre y a la región meridional y central de la actual Turquía, resalta la apertura explícita de los gentiles al mensaje evangélico. Los misioneros Pa- blo y Bernabé, fueron enviados por la comunidad de Antioquia de Siria, a anunciar el evangelio a los habitantes de Antioquia de Pisidia. Ellos llegaron el sábado, y se dirigieron directamente a la si- nagoga. Esta acción evangelizadora, contiene cierta semejanza a la que realizó Jesús en Nazareth, por el al anuncio programático de su misión. La diferencia entre Jesús y Pablo, es que los gentiles aceptan el mensaje de Pablo con fe. La respuesta positiva de los gentiles, genera sentimientos de enojo de parte de los judíos hacia Pablo y Bernabé, al punto de provocar división en la comunidad, y una fuerte agresión. Pablo los confronta diciéndoles que la salvación, en primer lugar, estaba re- servada para los judíos, pero como ellos no se convirtieron al mensaje del evangelio, ahora ellos se vuelven a los gentiles. En Iconio, trataron de evangelizar a los judíos, pero estos hicieron que las se- ñoras más influentes de la población expulsaran a Pablo y Bernabé de su comunidad. Por su parte, los paganos se alegraron y se pusieron a glorificar la Palabra de Señor, y la Palabra del Señor se di- fundía por toda la región. Comenta San Agustín que la Iglesia es universal y aunque los judíos hu- bieran aceptado el mensaje salvífico del Evangelio, la Iglesia se extendería por doquier. Segunda Lectura (Apocalipsis 7,9. 14b-17) En este texto apocalíptico, encontramos como núcleo del mensaje, la llamada universal a la salva- ción. Cristo es el Cordero sin mancha, quien ha derramado su sangre para redimirnos de nuestros pecados. Por su sufrimiento, Cristo nos hace participes de la salvación eterna. El sentido de purifi- cación, de los elegidos de Dios, más que legal o ritual, se entiende mejor en la llamada de todos los cristianos a la unión con Dios. Esta unión se inicia en nuestro bautismo, donde hemos sido marca- dos con el sello de su Espíritu Santo. Pero eso es solo el inicio de un camino de conversión diaria, ofreciendo nuestras vidas a Dios como un sacrificio vivo y santo. El camino hacia la glorificación, no descarta el sufrimiento, hasta dar la vida por Cristo. Desde los orígenes del cristianismo, la Iglesia ha sido purificada por la persecución. Muchos enemigos de los seguidores de Jesús, como el empe- rador Diocleciano, entre otros, quisieron acabar con la Iglesia Católica. Pero la sangre de los márti- res ha sido y seguirá siendo siempre, semilla de nuevos cristianos. El resto fiel, serán los que habrán blanqueado sus vestiduras y glorificarán a Dios por su victoria contra el poder del mal. Evangelio (Juan 10,27-30) Tomando en cuenta el contexto, podemos empezar nuestra meditación desde Juan 10, 22. Cada año, a finales de diciembre se celebraba en Jerusalén la fiesta de la purificación del templo, recor- dando la reconstrucción del Templo y el restablecimiento del culto dirigido por Judas Macabeo. Con la fiesta de la Dedicación del Templo, el pueblo judío, reafirmaba su identidad nacionalista después de sufrir el sometimiento del rey Antíoco IV en el siglo II antes de Cristo. San Juan ubica el dialogo de Jesús con algunos judíos, en el contexto de esta fiesta mitad religiosa y mitad cultural, donde se esperaba la liberación del pueblo dominado ahora por el imperio Romano. Jesús era una figura pro- metedora, con la esperanza de muchos de alcanzar la deseada liberación del poder enemigo.

Muchos lo consideraban un líder político, que guiaría al pueblo, como un pastor cuida a su rebaño,
a ejemplo de la figura monárquica de la estirpe del rey David. Los judíos querían escuchar de Jesús
mismo, si El era el Cristo, el Mesías. Jesús no les contesta tal cual ellos quieren escucharlo. Jesús
usa la imagen del Buen Pastor, quien se preocupa, cuida, protege, alimenta y guía a su pueblo. In-
dependientemente de la imagen en la que el Mesías es presentado según el Antiguo Testamento, el
elemento unificador es la relación íntima entre Dios y su pueblo.
La postura de Jesús como Buen Pastor, más que idealista, es de tipo jurídico. La autoridad religiosa,
ante la curación del ciego de nacimiento, procede a condenar a este hombre por no ser discípulo
de Moisés y, por consiguiente a Jesús. En Juan 9, 39-41 ante esta acusación sin fundamento, es Je-
sús quien dicta sentencia contra las autoridades judías. Jesús se basa en el capítulo 34 de Ezequiel
para dictar su veredicto. El profeta denuncia las injusticias de los jefes de Israel, y los acusa de ser
falsos pastores del rebaño. Dios se encarga de destituirlos de su cargo. Ahora es Dios mismo quien
lo reunirá y lo guiará estableciendo con ellos, una íntima relación. Jesús con esta postura, se pone a
la par con Dios en cuanto a su relación de confianza mutua con su pueblo, para unificarlo, proteger-
lo y llevarlo a la eternidad. Jesús recibe de su Padre Celestial, ese encargo de ser el Pastor Supremo,
donde los suyos escucharán su voz, y lo reconocerán como su verdadero Pastor.
Jesús viene a dar vida y, vida en abundancia, para los que creen en El y cumplen la voluntad de su
Padre. Esta es la base de esa relación de intimidad con Jesús. Los que escuchan su voz, lo siguen.
Escuchar en el lenguaje hebreo, es sinónimo de obedecer. Jesús nos conoce, si nosotros lo recono-
cemos como nuestro Pastor. La voz del pastor es inconfundible para las ovejas. Ellas no reconocen
una voz diferente a la de su pastor. Entonces se necesitan oídos entrenados para escuchar, no solo
con el cuerpo sino con el alma. Necesitamos afinar los oídos del corazón para poder tener la certe-
za de que es Dios quien nos habla, para no ser confundidos con las voces de los falsos pastores. La
finalidad del Buen Pastor es nuestra salvación eterna, la vida eterna. Para San Juan, esa vida inicia
ya en este mundo cuando ponemos nuestra fe en Jesús. El Buen Pastor, no dejará a los enemigos de
nuestra alma que le arrebaten sus ovejas. Pedimos a Dios que nos dé docilidad de espíritu para de-
jarnos guiar por El, nuestro Buen Pastor.
El Papa Pablo VI decretó que, en este domingo, conocido como el Domingo del Buen Pastor, se rea-
lizara una jornada mundial por las vocaciones al sacerdocio, pidiéndole a Dios que envíe mas pasto-
res para apacentar a su rebaño. En estos tiempos de crisis de fe, hay que orar a Dios por el incre-
mento de vocaciones al sacerdocio y a la vida religiosa. Hay que guiar a los jóvenes hacia Jesús, pa-
ra que lo conozcan, lo amen, y se entreguen a su servicio. Dios nos conoce por nuestro nombre y
constantemente nos habla para seguirlo y servirlo.
Oración por las vocaciones:
¡Oh Jesús, Pastor eterno de las almas! Dígnate mirar con ojos de misericordia a esta porción de tu
grey amada. Señor, gemimos en la orfandad. Danos vocaciones, danos sacerdotes, religiosos y al-
mas consagradas santos. Te lo pedimos por la inmaculada Virgen María de Guadalupe, tu dulce y
Santa Madre. ¡Oh Jesús danos sacerdotes, religiosos y almas consagradas según tu corazón! Amén.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM GUIDELINES
• Call your parish office to register for online pre-baptism class, in Eng-
lish or Spanish. Once class is completed, verified, and the paperwork
is complete, a date for Baptism will be given.
• CHANGE: Baptism will be administered at St. Luke on the 2nd
Wednesday of each month in English & the 4th Wednesday of each month
in Spanish.
• No more than 30 people allowed in Church to witness the
Baptism.
• Masks required for duration of time in Church; Hand sanitizer
also used
• Godparents must adhere to sponsor qualifications.

Catholic Community is instituting a “Food Drive.” Our parishes will have containers
at the entrances of our Churches to receive non-perishable canned foods as well as
dried beans, rice, milk, soups, etc. to assist the needy who come to our office doors

• St. Luke is sponsoring a breakfast fundraiser, Sunday, May 15, 8 am—1 pm, in
the parish hall. Our fabulous cooks have curated three choices for you—

chilaquiles with rice and beans. The donation is $10.00 per choice, so eat in

• Immaculate Conception is gearing up for their “giant” yard sale, Saturday,
May 21, beginning at 7 am, CYC parish hall.
• Loretto is accepting new students for the upcoming 2022—23 school year.

• The May Rosary, in Spanish, continues Monday—Friday, 5 pm, Immaculate
