Kurupo TAREHA In 1897 Kurupo was taken to see the St Andrews Royal and Ancient Golf Club, in England where he first acquired his interest in the game of golf. On his return he and his brother Te Roera developed golf- links on 100 acres of their Waiohiki property, which became known as the Waiohiki Links and later as the Napier Golf Links. Both Te Roera and Kurupo were in the Hawke's Bay team at a tournament at Gisborne in 1899. In 1932, Kurupo was instrumental in establishing the New
Nga whakakapinga o te rangi TAREHA In 1933, Kapi Tareha was the winner of the Men’s championship at the New Zealand Maori Golf Association’s third annual touney, held in Danneverke.
Audrey MULLANY (nee TAREHA) Audrey Tareha started playing golf at the age of 12. She was successful in the Hawkes Bay region as a teenager and won six times during her reign. She went on to win her first NZMGA tournament in 1938 in Otaki. The semi-finalist was Miss M Winterburn from Otaki whom she beat 4 and 3. In 1962, now known as Mrs Audrey Mullany, she won the championship in Napier; after a 24 year break.

Rovina Maniapoto-Anderso She first became familiar with Maori Golf through the involvement of her parents who traversed the courses throughout South Waikato and King Country townships. From the local settings to regional representation; it wasn’t long before Rovina joined in the annual New Zealand Maori Golf Tournament pilgrimage playing competitive golf for 17+ years. Rovina served as Secretary for NZMGA for a consecutive number of years making a significant contribution to the game. Rovina is a current life member of NZMGA.
Harry Ngatai T’was for a love of the game and for the people… His journey began back in the sixties, that was when Harry and hi wife Nari began playing golf. Harry recalls that it wasn’t long before they were involved in the promoting the game and helping to support the regional organisation, which soon led to him being elected as the Rotorua Maori Golfer’s Club President. It was the beginning of a long partnership. In 1971, Harry was officially appointed Tournament Secretary for the National Maori Golf Tournament serving golf for almost two decades. Those were the good old days of 300-400 players. An eye for detail Harry was meticulous in his dealings and communication with all. Harry was admired by many with his immaculate dress and infectious smile; which emulated the way he did the business. He retired from the role of Tournament Secretary in 1986. Harry is a current life member of NZMGA.

Polly Beatrice Paretohi King A successful sportswomen for over 60 years, it was her earliest pursuits acros wide range of sports that set the platform for her many achievements. At the sweet age of 14, Polly (nee Hira) won the Franklin U18 Table Tennis title She represented Auckland in Softball for four consecutive years from 1966 to 1969 and even turned her skills on the Waikaraka Park Stock Car track. Critical to most sports, Polly’s exceptional hand – eye co-ordination meant tha she was unstoppable in her pursuit for sporting excellence; including golf – which is her greatest passion. Polly is an eight time New Zealand Maori Golf Women’s Champion – including five consecutive years from 1982 to 1986. She also won the Akarana Golf Cl Ladies Championship 7 times. Her international achievements include the Fi Open and the British Ladies Amateur Golf, held in England. Beyond the game, Polly has made a significant contribution to the administrat of Golf, to tribal sports for her Iwi, Ngati Tipa; and also New Zealand as a Direc of the XIV Commonwealth games in 1990. Polly is a current life member of New Zealand Maori Golf.
Trevor Ormsby At six years old he would wield his putter and beat most of his opponents. By 14 he earned his first handicap which was an 8. He went on to win his first National Maori Golf title by the age of 17. With the current record still in his hands today, Trevor had won the New Zealand Maori Golf Senior Men’s Championship 8 times at age of 31. Five of these consecutively by 1963. Trevor has an exemplary record in golf, which includes representing Waikato in the Freyburg Rosebowl team from 1962 to 1974 – a mere thirteen years; and later their inaugural Masters Team in 1986. He was Waikato’s Stroke play Champion threes times during this period. His greatest achievement in the Waikato Golf Association was winning the Champion of Champions Trophy in 1969 And so it has been, that this high achiever; has been a well kept secret – a great example of a humble man. As Trevor’s wife said – “he was always a man who was ‘nothing flash – just neat and tidy.’”
