Pathways
Eligibility QTAC will calculate ATARs based on either: Best five QCAA General subjects Best four QCAA General subjects + The best result in a: QCAA Applied (currently Authority-registered subject or Subject Area Syllabus subject) or Certificate III or Certificate IV or Diploma or Advanced diploma If a student is eligible for an ATAR in both categories, QTAC will use their highest ATAR.
English as a requirement for ATAR eligibility • Eligibility for an ATAR = satisfactory completion of a QCAA English subject. • Satisfactory completion (Sound Level of Achievement) in one of five subjects Ø English, Essential English, Literature (new subject), English and Literature Extension (renamed), or English as an Additional Language. • While students must meet this standard to be eligible to receive an ATAR, it won’t be mandatory for a student’s English result to be included in the calculation of their ATAR .
Inter subject scaling • Raw scores for a given subject are adjusted so the results for that subject can be compared fairly with the results of any other subject. • If a student of a given ability studies a less challenging Maths subject they might get a 90/100. But if the same student studied a more challenging Maths subject they might only get a 70/100. However, through scaling, they should end up with the same scaled score for inclusion in their ATAR calculation. • If subjects were not scaled, students could maximize their ATAR by studying what they believe are the easiest possible subjects.
Inter subject scaling
Trials • 2016 Aquinas participated in the Mathematics B Trial • 2017 Aquinas participated in the Physical Education & Visual Art Trials Ø Real life simulations of the external exams Ø Feedback for teachers on how the examinations align with teaching and learning Ø Student feedback – level of difficulty Ø Similar to processes already with the QCS Test • Security • Times • Allowances
