Groups and Staffing 78 students and 9 members of staff GROUP 1; 9A, C, D, D1, E, G (LME, SHJ,RPY, BBL, JHS) GROUP 2; H, O, R, S, SK, T (ERF, BSS, RRG, NPY)
Itinerary FRIDAY 10TH May - Travel Arrive at school for normal school day – luggage to be left at school. Leave school at 3:30. students cannot leave school and come back! SATURDAY 11TH May - Ypres Tyne Cot, Essex Farm, Langemark, Passendaele museum, Cloth Hall museum, Menin Gate SUNDAY 12th May – Somme ETA BOHUNT 20:00 ARRIVE BACK TO DOVER AT 18:00
WHERE WILL THE STUDENTS VISIT? VIMY RIDGE Vimy Ridge is now owned by the Canadian Government, and the site is maintained as a memorial to the Canadian Forces who fought in the Great War
WHERE WILL THE STUDENTS VISIT? PASSENDAELE MEMORIAL MUSUEM This museum tells the story of the war in the Ypres Salient with special emphasis on the Battle of Passchendaele 1917. In the second part of the museum the visitor walks through a 1917 trench reconstruction and descends into a reconstruction of a 20 foot deep dugout with headquarters, accommodation, workshop, communication room and first aid post.
WHERE WILL THE STUDENTS VISIT? TYNE COT Tyne Cot is the resting place of 11,954 soldiers of the Commonwealth Forces.
WHERE WILL THE STUDENTS VISIT? LANGEMARK Langemark cemetery is one of only four First World War German cemeteries in the Flanders region
Saturday • Tyne Cot Cemetery & Memorial to the Missing • Passchendaele Memorial Museum • Langemark German Cemetery • Essex Farm • Ypres – Chocolate Shop, Menin Gate, Cloth Hall Museum – Menin Gate at 8pm to hear the last post.
Sunday • Newfoundland Memorial Park of Beaumont- Hamel • Vimy Ridge
Food Friday Dinner – please provide your child with food/snacks or money to eat on the ferry. Saturday Breakfast/ Lunch - provided Dinner- provided at a local restaurant in Ypres- please advise of any dietary requirements after this meeting. Sunday Breakfast/ Lunch- provided Dinner- please provide your child with food/snacks/drinks – Time on ferry
Accommodation • Students and Staff will be split across two hotels • Poppies 1 & 2 •
Behaviour on the trip Visiting a number of sensitive sites, students are expected to behave in a mature and sensible manner (no selfies, walking across/on top of monuments) • Students are expected; – To stay in groups of three as a minimum at all times. – To be in their rooms at a reasonable hour decided by their teacher. – Follow teacher instructions at all time. – Act politely and maturely at all times, they are representing Bohunt School.
Kit List • Belgium can be very cold at this time of year; therefore a warm coat, preferably waterproof, is an essential. • Comfortable shoes / trainers suitable for walking. (NOT Canvas) • Wellies/walking boots can be worn if muddy. Need to be in a separate bag. • Nightwear. • Clothes enough for two days- layers. • Towel. • Toiletries. • Spending money (we recommend no more than £30)* • Electronic items ie., Camera/Phone* • Small bag to carry packed lunches in. • Rucksack • Any necessary medication including Epi-pens and Inhalers CLEARLY labelled • WE ARE ONLY GOING FOR TWO NIGHTs! • * student is responsible for their own electronic goods.
Emergency Contacts No news is good news LME/ ERF will carry school mobile phones for emergency purposes If you have recently got a new phone number, please check that reception have it.
Medical LME/ ERF will have a basic first aid kit. 1. EPI- PEN/ INHALERS TO BE CLEARLY LABELLED AND CARRIED AROUND AT ALL TIMES. 2. TRAVEL SICKNESS TABLETS TO BE TAKEN BEFORE TRAVEL AND STUDENT TO BE PROVIDED WITH ENOUGH FOR DURATION OF THE TRIP.
FAQ/Questions • Spending money- there will be an opportunity for free time and some sites do have gift shops- recommended around 30 EUROS • Non-uniform can be worn on the Friday instead of uniform. It must be school appropriate and be in line with the school rules.
