QCE System • All subjects are developmental – subject selection is a 2 year choice and QCAA and TCC strongly advises against subject changes • Commitments which erode learning time would be a concern and will disadvantage students 13
QCE System • Units 1 and 2 – 3 pieces of assessment • General subjects - Units 3 and 4 - 3 internal assessments and 1 external assessment • Applied subjects - Units 3 and 4 - 4 internal assessments. (Essential Mathematics and Essential English have 1 Common Internal Assessment – QCAA set and marked by teachers 14
QCE System • Science and Maths – 50% external assessment based on Units 3 and 4 • The Arts – 25% external assessment on Units 3 and 4 • All others – 25% external assessment on Unit 4 15
QCE System •A-E achievement levels on Reports for Units 1, 2 and 3. •Final Reports are produced by QCAA and students receive their results in their myQCE account. 16
QCE System • Result out of 100 is allocated for General subjects in Units 3 and 4. • Students will receive a numerical and A-E final subject result. • Students studying Applied subjects will receive A-E. 17
What to choose? 1. University/TAFE prerequisites 2. What subjects they are good at 3. What subjects they enjoy
What to choose? •Applied Subjects (General Maths – Electrical) •Certificate courses – external providers •School-based Apprenticeship/Traineeship
Senior School is…………… Rigorous Competitive Demanding 20
What not to choose • Subjects to be with friends • Subjects not enjoyed but “someone” said it will lead to a good ATAR
Australian Tertiary Admission Rank ATAR 22
ATAR • The ATAR is the standard measure of overall school achievement. • It is a rank indicating a student’s position overall relative to other students. • The ATAR is expressed on a 2000-point scale from 99.95 (highest) down to 0, in increments of 0.05. 23
Australian Tertiary Admission Rank
Comparison Source: www.qtac.edu.au
Extra QTAC rank points • Some universities, for some courses, offer “bonus” points • For example, UQ Medical degree: • A language subject – Japanese – 1 point • Specialist Mathematics – 2 points • Rural/Regional applications – 1-2 points (depends on area) (Need to check with individual universities)
How is VET included in the ATAR? •Each VET qualification level has a single scaled score that can be included in the student’s ATAR •A scaled score for a Cert IV will be higher than a Cert III (Cert II does not count towards ATAR) 27
VET for tertiary entrance •Completed VET courses will still be used for tertiary entrance in two ways: 1. VET incorporation into ATAR; and/or 2. VET as the basis of admission (Universities provide this information – see websites) 28
Important • To be ATAR-eligible, students must receive a “C” or better in an English subject (General or Applied) • English will only count towards ATAR if it is one of student’s best five subject results • English/Literature (General subject) is a prerequisite for many University courses. 29
Subject Scaling • Scaling is necessary so that student results in different subjects can be compared fairly. • A student studying General Maths might get 78 / 100. • Another student achieves 78/100 in Specialist Maths. • Are these scores equal? Do the students deserve the same credit? • For more information go to the QTAC website – white paper inter-subject scaling
31
Subject Selection Process • Tuesday 27 July – data gathering (students will select 7 subjects or 6 with a study if choosing SOR) • Using student preferences, a line construction will be developed (some subjects will be cut at this stage) • Monday 2 August – Thursday 5 August – submission of subject selections through portal – link will be emailed to students (some subjects will be cut at this stage) • Monday 9 August – Subject Selection interviews commence 32
How can you help? • Discuss realistic pathways and options • Have regular discussions about university and jobs • Access Curriculum Handbook • Research courses and prerequisite subjects • Research jobs (https://joboutlook.gov.au/a-z.aspx) 33
