HCAS TELESCOPE TRAINING: ESTABLISHED NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER AS OBSERVATORY TRAINING DATES. TIM AGREED TO OFFER THE TRAINING IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE GENERAL MEETING BUT LIMITED NUMBER OF MEMBERS TO 5 OR 6. (NOV 6 AND JAN 1, 2015) TO OPERATE THE OBSERVATORY TELESCOPE AND MOUNT MEMBERS MUST HAVE COMPLETED THE TRAINING. NOVEMBER TID-BITS “THE ELEVENTH MONTH OF 2014 – NOVEMBER” MERCURY HAS ITS BEST MORNING STAR APPARITION DURING THE FIRST 10 DAYS OF THE MONTH,10 DEGREES ABOVE THE EASTERN HORIZON 40 MINUTES BEFORE SUNRISE. WITH VENUS AND SATURN NOW GONE AND MARS DIM AND LOW IN SAGITTARIUS THE ACTION SHIFTS TO REAPPEARING, BRIGHTENING JUPITER, NOW IN LEO, WHERE THE PLANET RISES AT AROUND 11:00 PM, IN MIDMONTH AND IS VISIBLE FOR MORE THAN HALF THE NIGHT. THE MOON IS TO ITS RIGHT ON THE 13TH, ALSO AT MIDMONTH ORION RISES BY 9:00 PM WITH SIRIUS THE DOG STAR, UP AN HOUR LATER, INTRODUCING THE ND BRILLIANT STARS OF THE “COLD SEASON”. A CROWD SURROUNDS THE SUN ON THE 22 , THE MOON, SATURN, MERCURY, AND VENUS, ALL TIGHTLY CLUSTERED BUT UNSEEN IN THE SOLAR GLARE. “24 OF THE STRANGEST THINGS ABOUT THE UNIVERSE” 1.- THE SLOWEST SPINNING OBJECT IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE IS THE NEAREST PLANET, VENUS, A PERSON COULD WALK FASTER THAN IT ROTATES. 2.- THE DENSITY OF EVERY NEUTRON STAR IS EQUIVALENT TO WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE AFTER CRUSHING A CRUISE SHIP UNTIL IT ’S THE SIZE OF A BALLPOINT PEN. 3.- THE LONGEST STAR NAME STILL IN COMMON USAGE IS LIBRA’S ZUBENESCHAMALLI, AND THE SHORTEST IS THE SUN. STAY TUNED TO NEXT MONTH FOR 3 MORE VERY INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE UNIVERSE.
WHAT’S HAPPENING ……..UP THERE HCAS As we start to wind down 2014 I wanted to share a few thoughts with you all. 2014 has been a great year, from terrific events and open houses, to new members, to old members chipping in and making HCAS a viable center for all things astronomical - more on all that later. We have a very important astronomy week coming up in November and and a lot of things happening will be in the national news. Naturally we will be seeing more people interested in whats happening and possibly more people attending the Open Houses - two in November! November 1 at 7:00PM November 29 at 6:30PM Tom tells me he is ready for visitors and I am sure we have folks ready to operate the Dome as well. With the new pavement down the parking lot is much more conducive for setting up and observing. I hope we will have even more members with scopes join our Open House events. There is plenty of room. Note: November and December will be the training months for operating the observatory and telescope mount. If you want to learn and become certified to operate the equipment you must have the training. First training is planned after the General Meeting on Thursday Nov 6 at 7:00PM - training immediately after meeting. Reminder: Sunday morning November 2 at 2:00AM we revert to Eastern Standard Time. So join in the fun and come out to the next Open Houses and catch up on whats happening... up there! Clear skies and have fun with Astronomy! Bob
OPEN HOUSE REPORTS TIM KAMEL OCTOBER 4, 2014 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4TH, WAS OUR PLANNED OPEN HOUSE FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER AND WAS ALSO INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMY DAY. THE FORECAST FOR MOST OF THE DAY WAS FOR OVERCAST, CLEARING IN THE EVENING. CLEAR, IT DID AND WE HAD A GOOD NIGHT. HOWEVER, NOT ALL WAS PERFECT. THE DRIVEWAY AND PARKING LOT WERE PAVED THE DAY BEFORE AND THERE WAS TO BE NO DRIVING ON IT FOR 48 HOURS. WE WERE STUCK PARKING IN THE TECH HS PARKING LOT AND WALKING OVER. MOST OF US WERE ABLE TO CARRY OUR EQUIPMENT UP, BUT SOME MEMBERS WERE NOT ABLE TO DO SO, GIVEN THE WEIGHTS INVOLVED. FOR ME, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO REPAIR MY LXD-125 AND WANTED TO TEST IT UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS TO MAKE SURE THAT IT WAS BACK TO GOING-TO AS IT WAS SUPPOSED TO. THIS REQUIRED THAT I BRING THE SCOPE CASE, TRIPOD, KIT BAG AND EYEPIECE BAG, PLUS MY SNACKS. I HAD HELP WALKING TO THE DOME BUT THE RETURN TRIP WAS A BEAR. HOWEVER, A SMALL PRICE TO PAY FOR OUR NEW DRIVEWAY AND PARKING LOT. I DID SET THE SCOPE UP AND IT IS WORKING. WE HAD A GOOD NIGHT, SOME 35 GUESTS CAME, INCLUDING SOME WHO HAD ATTENDED OUR CLOUDED OUT JOINT SESSION THE NIGHT BEFORE WITH HCPS AT SOUTHAMPTON MS. PARTICIPATION BY CLUB MEMBERS WAS ALSO GOOD. BESIDES ME THERE WAS GARY, LARRY, TOM, JOE, RICK, TIM P, DAVE, PAUL, BOB, KAREN & MAGGIE, AND JIM & COLLEEN. THAT IS 14 MEMBERS. PRETTY IMPRESSIVE, THE MOST CLUB PARTICIPATION IN A LONG TIME. WE SHOWED THE USUAL TARGETS. I MYSELF HIT MOON, THE DOUBLE CLUSTER, M31AND ALBERIO. ONE PARTICULAR TREAT WAS ROLLING OUT OUR NEW GPS GUIDED MEADE 10” SCT AND PUTTING IT THROUGH ITS PACES. THE WHEELIE GADGET THAT BOB PUT TOGETHER TO MOVE THE SCOPE WORKS WELL AND IT IS FAIRLY EASY TO BRING THE SCOPE OUT. THOUGH A MEADE, THE HAND CONTROLLER DOES NOT QUITE WORK LIKE THE MEADE CONTROLLERS THAT I HAVE. IT TOOK SOME GETTING USED TO. HOWEVER, WE GOT IT TO WORK AND GOT THE FINDER ALIGNED SO NOW IT SHOULD BE EASIER IN THE FUTURE. TIM KAMEL
BLACK FOREST STAR PARTY TIM KAMEL AUGUST 23RD AND 25TH, 2014 PART 2 THIS IS THE SECOND INSTALLMENT OF MY REPORT ON THE BLACK FOREST STAR PARTY IN LATE AUGUST. BY WAY OF A BRIEF SUMMARY, THE EVENT HAD LOUSY WEATHER AND I STAYED ONE MORE DAY, SUNDAY NIGHT, WHICH WAS FORECAST TO BE CLEAR. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE WERE SOME THIN CLOUDS COMING AND GOING THROUGH THE SKY THE ENTIRE NIGHT. WORSE, BECAUSE OF THE RAIN THAT FELL THE NIGHTS BEFORE, THERE WAS AN INCREDIBLE DEW PROBLEM. I FORGOT MY KIT BAG WHICH HAD MY MIRROR FANS AND THE HAIR DRIER I USED TO REMOVE DEW, SO THERE WAS REALLY NO OBSERVING AS THE MIRRORS ON MY NEWTONIANS WERE ALL FOGGED UP. I WAS LEFT WITH DOING ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY, TAKING A TIME EXPOSURE AND THEN WIPING DOWN THE LENS BEFORE TAKING THE NEXT SHOT. NONE-THE-LESS, I GOT OFF SOME 140 SHOTS, SOME OF WHICH CAME OUT NICE. I SHARED SOME IN MY REPORT IN THE SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER. HERE ARE A FEW MORE. THESE ARE ALL WIDE FIELD SHOTS, WITH THE CAMERA MOUNTED ON MY LXD-75 TRACKING MOUNT USING A 50 MM F/2 LENS. I SHOT AT F/2.8, MOSTLY AT 800 ISO THOUGH THERE WERE SOME SHOTS AT 1600 ISO. MOSTLY I SHOT 6-10 SHOTS OF EACH TARGET, WHICH I THEN STACKED IN DEEP SKY STACKER. ( LABELED AS PICTURE A ): THE FIRST ONE IS A SHOT OF CASSIOPEIA, TO THE LEFT, WITH THE DOUBLE CLUSTER TOWARDS THE BOTTOM, LEFT OF CENTER. ( THIS IS LABELED AS PICTURE B ) THE SECOND IS A SHOT OF THE HANDLE OF THE BIG DIPPER. I WAS TRYING TO GET ALCOR MIZAR, WHICH I DID, BUT THE DEW ON THE CAMERAL LENS BLOATED THE BRING STARS. ( THIS IS LABELED AS PICTURE C ) MY THIRD SHOT WAS FOR THE KEYSTONE ASTERISM IN HERCULES. M13 IS THE BRIGHT OBJECT BETWEEN THE TWO LOWER BRIGHT STARS. THIS IS A CROPPED VIEW TO ELIMINATE SOME ARTIFACTS ON THE LOWER PART OF THE ORIGINAL PHOTO.

SPECTRUM OF NEPTUNE PETER NERBUN MEMBERS TIM KAMEL
Neptune and Spectroscopic Detection of Ammonia in its atmosphere This image shows Neptune on Sept 14 2014 at 2:10 AM and its visible light spectrum on Sept 23 2014 at 1:36AM. The raw spectrum of Neptune that I captured is shown as the thin color bar beneath the blue image of the planet. Beneath the raw spectrum note the X-Y graph depicting the spectral distribution of light intensities for the full range of visible light wavelengths. The points along the graph's red line which dip to very low values correspond to the black areas in the raw spectrum; the two points that I've labeled as "NH3" indicate the presence of ammonia in Neptune's atmosphere. These two points show a drop in light intensity at wavelengths of 5430 and 5754 Angstroms which correspond to the energies at which light is absorbed by the ammonia molecule. Since light is absorbed by ammonia in Neptune's atmosphere we don't see the two shades of green color corresponding to those wavelengths. This is the first time that I've been able to detect ammonia in a planetary atmosphere. Also note the absorption of hydrogen at 4861 Angstroms and methane (CH4) at 6190 Angstroms. The rectangular color bar at the bottom of my image is Neptune's raw spectrum corresponding in scale to the wavelengths along the X-axis of the X-Y graph. Note the deep black absorption lines appearing in the green portion of the spectrum for ammonia and in the red portion for methane. I captured the image of Neptune with a C11 SCT, a 2x barlow lens, a 0.66x focal reducer, and an ASI 120MC astronomy camera; I captured the image of the spectrum of Neptune with the same equipment plus a spectroscopic diffraction grating known as the Star Analyser 100 and without the 2x barlow. I created the spectral graph with a program known as "Rspec (Version 1.7).
TIM PHELAN The first is M45 that I took on 9/29/2014 in Fawn Grove, PA. I stacked 80 35" exposures at ISO 800 with Deep Sky Stacker and processed in Photoshop CS2 and Lightroom 5.2. Equipment used was the club's 80mm refractor and Orion Sky View Pro EQ mount and my Nikon D3100
LUNAR ECLIPSE OCTOBER 8, 2014 TIM PHELAN HAS CAPTURED THIS FANTASTIC SHOT FROM OVER ON THE MAIN CAMPUS UP BY THE BASEBALL FIELDS ON RT.22
AS THE LAST SUPERMOON OF 2014 EMERGED FROM BEHIND A BAND OF CLOUDS GARY SNAPPED THIS SHOT WITH HIS T-3 AND THE 80MM REFRACTOR
HERE ARE THREE SHOTS JUST PRIOR TO THE MOON SETTING BEHIND THE TREES ON US. BOTH GARY AND BOB AT THIS POINT WERE STANDING IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE OBSERVATORY AND JUST TOOK THE REST OF THE ECLIPSE IN, NO TELESCOPES TO VIEW FROM, AND DEW ALL OVER THE CAMERAS, AS THE MOON TURNED A BRIGHT RED IN THE WEST, AND THE SUN COMING UP IN THE EAST, IT WAS TIME TO HEAD OUT AND GET SOME BREAKFAST.
AFTER RETURNING HOME FOR THE DAY, GARY SET UP HIS LAPTOP TO LOOK AT A FEW IMAGES HE HAD TAKEN WHEN HE VIEWED THE VIDEO OF “SOMETHING” THAT CROSSED THE FACE OF THE MOON AND AS OF THIS WRITING, THE OBJECT IS BEING INVESTIGATED SO AS SOON AS GARY FINDS OUT JUST EXACTLY WHAT IT IS HE WILL LET US KNOW. IN THE MEAN TIME HERE IS A SHOT AND SEE IF YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT, THE OBJECT LAST A TOTAL OF 1-1/2 SECONDS CROSSING FROM THE NORTHEAST TO THE WEST.
©TPHELAN10-2014 “TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE MOON” SOUNDS LIKE A SONG I HAVE HEARD BEFORE ?...........THANKS TIM FOR THE SHOT THANKS TIM
