WISH SPOTLIGHT Alayjia’s shopping spree wish comes true! Seventeen-year-old Alayjia had been through some dark moments on her journey with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a rare cancer. After numerous tests, scans, exams and treatments, the Syracuse teen was ready for a dose of happy. Enter Make-A-Wish Central New York. On a sunny April morning, we dispatched a limousine to pick up Alayjia, her mom Renai, and two friends for a surprise shopping spree at Destiny USA. As the limo pulled up to the mall, Alayjia took in quite a sight: A red carpet, stanchions and a poster-waving crowd that was there to greet her! As she stepped out of the limo, the crowd – a group of Cazenovia College business and management students – cheered her on. Alayjia’s wish-granting volunteers, dressed as bodyguards, escorted her inside the mall for photos, then on to the first stop of the day: a makeover at Sephora. Alayjia’s special day featured shopping at her favorite stores, lunch at TGI Fridays, games at Dave & Busters, and fun at RPM Raceway. Our special thanks to Destiny USA’s marketing team and to participating stores and sponsors, including 5Wits, American Eagle Outfitters, Cazenovia College students, Footlocker, Forever 21, H&M, Thomas Pirro, Jr. Limousine, and Victoria’s Secret. A special shout-out to wish granters Aaron Santangelo and Luke Slate for the special touches! Our best goes out to Alayjia and her family, as we welcome them to the Make-A-Wish family! 3 3

DONOR SPOTLIGHT Shining a Light on Tarson Pools & Spas When a child becomes eligible for Make-A-Wish, they learn about the five types of wishes – I wish to be, to meet, to go, to have and to give. It may go without saying, but two very popular wishes in the “to have” category are swimming pools and spas. Enter in-kind Donor Tarson Pools & Spas. Tarson has partnered with our chapter since 2002, providing support and guidance for special wishes and ensuring our wish kids have the best experience possible. But Tarson doesn’t just stop at pool wishes. Their support for our chapter and the children we serve goes above and beyond, including annual sponsorship of our Make-A-Wish Open and Walk on the Wild Side events, fund-raising and awareness activities at their New York State Fair booth, and hosting celebrations for wish announcements and milestone wishes. In fact, Tarson was the title sponsor for the Jamesville Balloon Fest, where they raffled a new television and donated all proceeds to Make-A-Wish Central New York. In light of this ongoing support, we are proud to announce Tarson as our 2019 Sugarman Law Firm Wish Ball Corporate Honoree. Company co-owner Robin Tarson says she and husband Robert are grateful for the recognition. “We are honored and thankful that we’ve been able to participate in helping make wishes come true,” she said. “I believe the excitement of an upcoming wish, the experience of that wish and the memories created make a difference to the child and their family.” Help us honor the Tarsons at our 2019 Sugarman Law Firm Wish Ball. NOTEWORTHY Thank You to our community partners! Kessel Run Johnathan Vienneau and Greg Dorrity (a.k.a. Chewbacca and Darth Vader) wanted to have a good time while making a difference. So the pair joined forces to organize the Boonville Kessel Run, a fun event that celebrates Star Wars, features local establishments and raises funds for charity. Johnathan and Greg hope the event and the funds raised grow each year. Thanks, guys! For more information, visit http://boonvillekesselrun.com. BIER Club of the Endicott Region The BIER Club of the Endicott Region hosted its fourth annual Brew & Food Fest May 16th at the Endicott Visitor Center. Wegmans Toy Drive We extend special thanks to our friends at Wegmans and their generous customers for hosting a toy drive for our regional wish closets! Nine stores throughout the Central New York area participated in the month-long drive. The toys will provide a happy pick-me-up for wish kids throughout our 15-county territory. Thank you all! Dave & Buster’s Throughout the month of April, the stars were aligning at Dave & Buster’s Destiny USA. Wish Star sales, proceeds from a specific game and $1 for every purchase of garlic parmesan cheese curds resulted in a donation of just over $3,000 – a dramatic increase over last year! A heartfelt “Thank YOU” to Dave & Buster’s and their very generous consumers! 10
