Thank you! choices in the aging process. Mary McCleary, Raffle Chair Mary McCleary, Program Chairperson Tutors Needed Cecil County Public Schools is looking for tutors to support first generation college-bound students. The program, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), is designed to teach students study skills and habits of mind needed for college success. In addition, students are supported through the college and scholarship application process. Elkton High, Elkton Middle, and Cherry Hill Middle Schools are participating offering an AVID elective to selected seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students. As part of the program, students participate in weekly Tutorology sessions. Through a process that helps them identify their "points of confusion," students and their tutors work through homework and preparation for their classes. The program requires some training and a commitment to participate approximately once a week throughout the school year. (Travel and grandchildren are understandably reasons to miss days). The schedule will be determined after we know how many tutors are available. If you are interested, please email Anne Gellrich, Executive Director for Secondary Education at agellrich@ccps.org. 2017-2018 State of Treasury Cecil County RSPA has had a very successful year providing for our members, community and students of Cecil County. Thanks to the social committee we have met in a variety of places to enjoy fellowship with each other. This upcoming year will be no exceptions. Check the CecilRSPA.org website and Chalkboard for times and locations. If prior years are any indications, meetings will be very entertaining and great food. Because of your generous participation in the raffle and donations, we have increased future teacher scholarships to three thousand last year. More importantly students in the county have received necessary items to aide in their education via “Kids fund”. Over $2300 has gone to various schools to meet their needs and supplemental items. We continue to be tax-exempt compliant by filing forms 990N to IRS and COF-85 with MD tax office. I am happy to inform you that our service organization is Maryland State Tax Exempt until 2022. We are registered with several local stores and if any items need to be purchase for Cecil County RSPA, I can provide necessary paperwork. Due to your great cost saving efforts we ended the year with a surplus of $286.73. This amount may not be significant but it is an indicator of how much your dues, donations and attendance to our meetings have help us provide over $14,000 to the future student in education of Cecil County. As a non-profit organization all funds go to provide our community benefit. THANK YOU for your continued support! 5

Retirement Memoir Donna Shubra Thachik After 21 years of teaching elementary art, I bid the classroom and a wonderful academic community farewell for the great unknown. I had no plan. I still have no plan. I enjoy each day as it comes with no particular schedule. I am blessed to share this bliss with my husband of 45 years, Stephen. I love to travel and look forward to the trip west to the National Parks. Seeing Bermuda, Ireland, and New England was awesome. I enjoy yearly jaunts with Ellen Buesgen to follow a particular gallery scene or artist – Georgia O’Keeffe in Santa Fe, New Mexico (twice) being a major art destination. The Wyeth’s in Maine and the contemporary scene in Ashville, NC and Greenville, SC were favorite destinations. On occasion, I teach art classes in my home. I have a basement floral design area where I create original and unique seasonal pieces for my yearly craft and sale, which has been a 35 year tradition celebrating the season with good friends and delicious food and with my family’s assistance. I’ve joined a wonderful community of Presbyterian women and yoga, Pilates, and jazzersize classes at the church. I belong to two book clubs and love to read. I’ve also enjoyed the love and support of my Bunco group for over 40 years. We have three daughters in three states and I am very proud of their careers and achievements. Life is good.
