LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY!ȱ Douglas Bushman, Director of Parish Formation & Missionȱ The answer of Jesus to the request of His disciples, “Lord, teach us to pray,” is quite extraordinary, if we pause to reflect upon it. For, Jesus did not respond by giving His disciples instruction on how to pray, as if prayer could be reduced to following a set of directions. Rather, He prayed with them. He did not give them a theology of prayer, but the very reality of prayer. ȱ ȱSt. Luke records that Jesus replied to the disciples’ desire to be instructed about prayer by praying the Our Father in their presence. He invited them into His own prayer. He invited them to make His words their ownȯthe very words that He uses when He speaks to His Father. For, He alone knows the right words to use when speaking to the Father: “No one knows … who the Father is except the Son and any- one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him” (Lk 10:22).ȱ ȱIn one way or another, every person wants to be taught to pray. The question can’t be avoided. A person can try to forget God by becoming preoccupied with material and physical wellȬbeing, burying himself in frantic activity, seeking to have all of the pleasures that the world offers. But even then, deep down, even if repressed, there is an inner impulsion toward God. St. Augustine famously put into words: “Our hearts are restless until they come to rest in You, O God.” ȱ ȱJust as the disciples put the question about prayer to Jesus, so children put this question to their parents. They are actually pu;ing the question to God by pu;ing it to their parents, for, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church informs us, “parents are the first rep- resentatives of God” to their children” (CCC, 239). It is very important that parents not wait until their children actually formulate the question about prayer. Parents do not wait to feed and to clothe their children until they verbally ask to be fed and clothed. Par- ents know what their children need long before they can put it into words. The same applies to prayer. Parents know that prayer is the greatest gift they can give to their children, because without prayer there is no relationship with God, and without a relation- ship with God there is no hope for deep and lasting happiness.ȱ ȱParents teach their children to pray by inviting them into their own prayer, as Jesus did with His disciples. When the Church refers to the Christian family as a domestic Church, it envisions the family as a community of prayer in which one generation passes on to the next generation the wisdom of a personal conversation with God.ȱ The Christian family is the first place of education in prayer. Based on the sacrament of marriage, the family is the “domestic church” where God’s children learn to pray “as the Church” and to persevere in prayer. For young children in particular, daily family prayer is the first witness of the Church’s living memory as awakened patiently by the Holy Spirit. (CCC, 2685)ȱ Children learn from their parents that prayer is not just reserved for when we step out of daily life and into God’s world when we enter a church. Daily life is also God’s world, because it is in daily life that we live out our vocation to love. This is what we should learn to talk to God about when we pray. For, God is love! ȱ Prayer and Christian life are inseparable, for they concern the same love and the same renunciation, proceeding from love; the same filial and loving conformity with the Father’s plan of love; the same transforming union in the Holy Spirit who conforms us more and more to Christ Jesus; the same love for all men, the love with which Jesus has loved us. “Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he [will] give it to you. This I command you, to love one another.” (CCC, 2745)ȱ And, this is why there is so much joy that accompanies prayer: the joy of hearing God say how much He loves us, and the joy of telling Him how much we love Him!ȱ Deacons Joe Michalak, left, and Ramon Garcia Degollado hold the Book of the Gospels over the head of Bishop Joseph Williams during his ordination Mass.ȱ DAVE HRBACEK |ȱ THE CATHOLIC SPIRIT ȱ ȱ For more on Bishop Williams and other news from across the Archdiocese visit:ȱ thecatholicspirit.comȱ 2
