INTERVIEWS Thank you to the parents who came and talked with their child’s teacher. This was an excellent way for the communica- tions to continue. Remember a child whose parents are involved with their learning are Connor Welsh, Matilda Cole & Evie Reid much more successful. Researchers have evidence for the positive effects of parent involvement on children. When schools and parents continuously support and encourage the children’s learning and development (Eccles & Harold, 1993; Illinois State Board of Education, 1993). According to Henderson and Berla (1994), “the most accurate predictor of a student’s achievement in school is not income or social status but the extent to which that student’s family is able to: 1.Create a home environment that encourages learning 2.Express high (but not unrealistic) expecta- tions for their children’s achievement and future careers 3.Become involved in their children’s education at school and in the community So we hope you enjoyed this opportunity to engage with your child’s learning and you are able to invest some time and energy over the break to think about the three points above. FRIDAY CLASS PARTY The whole school christmas party will be held at the pool. We will depart school at 10am, all children will be wearing their swimmers under their party clothes. Please bring party food to share for lunch and a full drink bottle. Water will be supplied. NO LOLLIES please. Swimming lessons are as normal and will return back to school by 2.30.
MS STURMANS LEARNING GYM Completing STEM challenges has been exciting especially with the christmas theme. Look at these snowmen! The captain speeches did the school proud. Well done Teya, Adelaide, Cyron and Connor. We look forward to Thursday night, when the winners will be announced.
MR MORRIS’ LEARNING GYM During week 9 we had the privilege of going to Forum 6 cinemas in Wagga to watch the movie ‘Wonder’. The students in our learning gym had been busting to see the movie after reading about the novel about August Pullman, a boy who struggles with bullying after he was born with craniofacial disformaties. The movie was powerful with many life lessons to be learnt about friendship, bullying and standing up for what you believe in. Connor said “ The movie was cool, exciting and tear jerking all at the same time” Cyron said “It was sad but good as well” We highly recommend everyone reading the novel Wonder and also watching the movie if you have the chance. Furthermore we are trying to find fun and exciting ways to learn our times tables while incorporating it with area learning also. Here are some examples of a fun way you could learn times tables with your child at school. We tried multiplication battle ships and a tetris style game that required the students to roll 2 dice and multiply the two numbers, they then had to match those numbers onto the grid paper to show the area it would take up. We have also been trying to finish our COLA improvement displays to meet with a representative from AMU to see if we can brighten up our COLA area in 2018. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy new year!
MRS D’S LEARNING GYM The end of the year has arrived with a rush! In K/1 we are busy completing Christmas craft activities and preparing for our performances on Presentation Night. Swimming school has been a big feature of our week and the children are thoroughly enjoying the activities and structured lessons. I personally would like to thank the school community for their welcome and support over the past three terms. It has been great to be part of the team that is Ladysmith School and to have such a wonderful group of children to work with. A special thanks to Fiona Lehmann for her help on Fridays with reading and to Kai Bowen and for her patience and hard work in training K/1 in Thai dancing. Many thanks also to the Bowen family for providing the costumes the children will wear on Presentation Night. I wish all the families a happy and relaxing Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
