June is another month brimming with recognition and remembrances. Flag Day on June 14th commemorates
the adoption by the United States Continental Congress of an emblem comprised of 13 alternating red and
white stripes and a field of 13 white stars on a blue background. Each June 14th we celebrate the flag of
our Nation that still symbolizes freedom all over the globe.
Our newest Federal holiday, Freedom Day or Juneteenth, marks the end of slavery in the United States.
While we should be proud of finally taking a small step recognizing an end to a dark period, never forget
that all who suffer discrimination remain oppressed and there is much to be done.
June is the month of Gay Pride. Not only is this a celebration of confidence, self-respect, and solidarity of
gay people but also the acknowledgement of their history, culture and contributions and those of their allies.
Then there’s Father’s Day. I haven’t often spoken of my father and his positive influence on my life and the
man I have become. He was a selfless, kind gentleman devoted to his family and those around him. Parkin-
son’s debilitated my mother for over 12 years before her passing. My father, however, never wavered in his
dedication and care for her or our family, nor did he ever cease to look at my mother with deep, abiding love.
As for me, Dad never stopped caring for this awkward unsure man-child who feared being himself because
maybe he would no longer be loved. Honestly, it was the opposite. Dad was always there helping me,
teaching me, encouraging me and loving me for being me.
Perhaps the athlete and commentator Jim Valvano said it best, “My father gave me the greatest gift anyone
could give another person. He believed in me.”
So though I said it many times Dad while you lived, it was not enough. Dad, you are a gift that shines
through me. I love you for still helping me when I fear I don’t have the strength to stand. I know you are
as you always were, right here.
June is filled with honor and recognition. Stand proud in who you are and in tribute to those people and
                                         histories that shaped you.
                                         Stay healthy and be proud.
                                                   Randy

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY — SUNDAY, JUNE 19

From the Desk of Robert Lane, Senior Center Liaison
It’s Spring and warmer weather will be here soon.
National Independence Day or Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. This
date commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved peoples in Galveston, Texas
learned of their freedom 2 ½ years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
The proclamation issued on January 1, 1863 freed all people held in the Confederate
States in slavery. The passage of the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution on
December 6, 1865 formalized the freedom of all enslaved peoples in every State thus
ending nearly 250 years of the ability of a person to own another person as property.
This year’s Juneteenth celebration will be held on Saturday, June 18th. The Neptune
Township Black History Committee is planning the second annual celebration at Mid-
town Commons Park. This year’s event, Black Health and Wellness, is a combination
block party and health fair. There will be fun, entertainment and important information
all in one place! To learn more contact Dianna Harris by cell or text at 732-616-2940
