Dear Aunt Quiltie, The Covid pandemic has made my life unexciting and stuck at home. I have enjoyed watching videos and zoom events, was thrilled when my local quilt shops opened up, and hoping quilt retreats will soon get back to normal. But I Iwant to get out of the house, take a road trip, touch fabric, and look at new fabric designs and quilts. What would you recommend? I have two suggestions for you. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - My friend and I recently got together and planned a one day road trip 1 to a quilt shop about an hour from home, that we hadn’t been to in years since our retreats had been cancelled. We drove up to Turquoise Threads in Prescott. Turquoise is an AQG Affiliate and has beautiful selections of Kaffe Fassett and Tulia Pink fabric. They have a large classroom and loads of beautiful quilts hanging up. Turquoise staff also suggested lunch at nearby Augies Restaurant. (Someone suggested its part of the Rock Springs Café). Another great day trip is to drive up to Payson and visit the Copper Needle. You can also check out other fabric stores on the way. I would suggested contacting the shops beforehand to determine their store hours. So pack up your car, invite a few quilting friends along and enjoy your day away from home. Another suggestion is to start planning a quilt retreat either for your quilt chapter or a few 2 close sewing buddies. On the AQG website under Resources, there are listing of a few re- treat locations. They are located in Tucson, Phoenix, Heber and our most recent one that will be posted soon is just outside of Wickenburg. Standing Stones Retreat Center has all the amenities even a walking path, a prayer garden and is located in the high desert. Dave and Barb Anderson have designed a great facility with great sunset views. If you know of any other re- treat locations that you would like to be listed on the AQG website, just direct them to the website and follow the instructions. AQG membership is not required. You can also just send an email to newletter@aqgmail.org and let us know about your experience. We will share!! Sincerely, Aunt Quiltie If you have a question and would like it to be answered in future Chatter publications, please send in you question to news- letter@aqgmail.org you may win a prize from the Co-Publishers. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 6

Cholla Quilters of Mesa submitted by Patti Kupferer Springtime Fun! The month of March was jam-packed with fun for the Cholla Quilters. We had the big reveal of our 2020 BOM quilts and a wonderful Show and Tell. Susan S. did a marvelous job putting together all our charity sewing day heart blocks into tops and then giving them exquisite quilting. Seven quilts were made from all those blocks and just look at the cute picture of Ronald MacDonald with the quilts! We also had our first virtual retreat via Zoom. This year’s retreat committee, (Diane B., Fay L., Pam Sh., Patti K., Karen M., and Barb A.), owe a big debt of gratitude to the 2020 Retreat Committee (Barb S., Lorraine T., Diane B., and Alice S.), for all the hard work they put in on goodies, games, and prizes that we were able to use this year. The 2-day retreat was free and activities included: Guess the Hexies in the Bag, no waste flying geese charity blocks, Bingo, an actual scavenger hunt, guest speaker, Patti Pearce, Never Have I Ever, fabric box demo, breakout rooms, and Get off that Thing stretch breaks. Everyone received their goodies, game sheets and snacks in a bag from the pick-up site and an additional prize bag that couldn’t be open until your name was spun on the prize wheel. With so many games for prizes, everyone received two prizes! A huge thank you to those who donated the prizes and to Diane who was our MC. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 8
Cholla continued Calico Cut- Ups of El Mirage submitted by Fred Walker Well, March has blown by and we are into April! I hope this note finds you well. We had our regularly scheduled meetings in March! One with ZOOM and one a Meeting-in-the Park. Welcome to the visitors at both meetings. We will continue the park meetings if weather permits, but each will be announced ahead of time, so watch your email for information. Our members have been active getting us “back” to normal! It is wonderful to see everyone’s giving spirit. Here’s a short list of what’s been going on: The Annual Tea is scheduled. See and Sew is a success. Our website up to date. The Charity efforts are organized. Our Programs are being set up. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 9
Calico Cut- Ups (continued) Helen F. is organizing the Annual Tea. The Tea will be at noon on May 10, 2021. She asks that you bring your favorite teacup (…no coffee mugs allowed). Then, for extra fun, dress up in your favorite “afternoon tea” outfit. There will be a prize for the best dressed. We have had a couple of See and Sews after our ZOOM meetings and it really has been fun. We even learned a tip from one of our members. If you have “un-sewn” a seam and need to get rid of those pesky little threads, just gently rub an old-fashioned pink eraser across your fabric. Gathers those little buggers right up! Luanne B. is doing a great job keeping our new website up to date. Have a question about what is going on? Check there – she’s got your information. Let her know if you need anything posted. Marlene has been busy setting up our charity efforts! She’s enlisted a “helper” and inventoried, sandwiched, and categorized our current quilt “stock”. To continue to make the sandwiches, we are in need of large pieces of fabric (1 yd or more) for the quilt backs. She chose two organizations to support. We are continuing our Luke Air Force base support. The pattern for the diaper bag quilts is on the website. She, also, worked her magic and we will now be donating our quilts to foster children in our area. They need quilts in approximately three sizes: Crib: 36” X 52” Child: 52” X 52” Teen: 40” X 72” (This is the most needed size) Theresa F. and Donna G. are now providing programs at our fourth Monday meeting. They are sending out a survey to find out what type of programs our Chapter would like to see. At the March meeting they provided excellent tutorials on different ways to bind your quilts. Everyone at the meeting said they learned something. Even when to take out two or three stitches to help miter your corners! Delightful Quilters of Scottsdale submitted by Jane Wilcox and Anita Blain Our March 25, 2021 Zoom Meeting. A huge Thank You to Gretchen Barker for leading our March meeting on the 25th, and finishing in record time…25 minutes so we could begin our Mystery Sew A Long!! There were 43 participants during the Zoom Business portion of the meeting. Judy Peters let us know another house for Habitat has been designated. Judy already has quilts for the parents’ bed and a three- year-old boy. The need for the infant boy was filled at our meeting. Amanda Jeffrey www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 10
Delightful Quilters (Continued) Membership: We reminded our members about DQ and AQG dues. Yes, it is that time of year to renew both our DQ Membership of $25 and our membership to AQG which is reduced this year to $25 if you renew prior to July 1, 2021. After that date the dues will be $30. Maggie Nichols has already sent out the information to mail the DQ dues to her and the AQG dues can be done online or you can mail them to the AQG office. We will be sending out what we have as an up- to- date roster shortly. Please check your information for correctness. If there is anything wrong or missing, please let us know. The winner for March’s block of the month is Anne King. Thank you to Elaine Karcher for making the BOM that will be due in April BOM. It is a tree pattern and looks fun and simple to make. Our Mystery Sew A Long was a huge success and everyone had a DELIGHTFUL time! Pictured are some of the mystery quilts that were made! We have decided to display our “Initial Challenge Quilts” on April 27 at the Coffee Plantation from 10 am to 12 noon. It’s our own little mini show, and we will award a “Viewer’s Choice” prize. This challenge should be a LOT of fun, and so interesting to see what everyone creates using the first initial of their first name. The Delightful Quilters hope to be holding in-person meetings by May, fingers crossed!! Won’t it be fun to get around everyone again and assume our *normal* activities!? If you are interested in our meetings, we meet the last Thursday of the month. Email info@delightfulquilters.com for more information about where and when! Kingman Quilters of Kingman submitted by Sally Bradley We are continuing our learning and classes. Dorelle conducted a class on how to construct and build a block. I saw calculators and math going on, but the result was a better understanding of different pattern designs. Then Sally C. had a class on "Magic Square". It demonstrated how to make a Bow Tie block with a three dimensional center. And Marsha gave a class on the construction of the "Sew Together Bag." It was a huge success. All the ladies did an amazing job. So many beautiful colors. She had a great time teaching how to put this bag together and even showed how to re-attach a zipper tab onto the zipper. (There really is an easy way to re-attach it!) www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 13
Shoofly Quilters of Payson submitted by Rita Kami Happy Spring to all quilters! Payson is the place to be, warm days, cool nights and sewing, sewing. We had a great meeting, lots of show and tell, and lots of community service quilts to give away. Our sew days are back and things are almost normal, thank you ladies. We are gearing up for quilting shows up here in our area, classes starting up, life is good. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 14
Shoofly Quilters (Continued) Havasu Stitchers of Lake Havasu City submitted by Susan George Well, it’s time to share again. And I’m sew delighted to tell ya’ll that we’re happily, yet slowly, starting to get back to normal. (Whatever that may be.) Our meeting last night was certainly a treasured time for all in attendance. We were able to visit with those we hadn’t seen for such a long time and to see some of their quilted accomplishments. It was sew GREAT!!! Our 2021 Quilt Show Committee is still preparing for the bi- annual show in November. (Keep your fingers crossed that the Covid numbers continue to decline so that we can share all the many lovely treasures made by our dedicated quilters this past year.) The Opportunity Quilt is finally finished, and I must say it’s the best EVER. And it’s very big…108” x 122” and incredibly BEAUTIFUL. Thank you, Judy Pederson and “crew” for the exquisite paper piecing. We extend a very, special and standing ovation THANK YOU to Ginny Clausen for the tremendous quilting. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 15
Havasu Stitchers (Continued) Again, this quilt is truly BEAUTIFUL. (The attached photo, on the previous page, is at one of our “pop-up” sales events under the London Bridge.) The quilt is a real beauty, as you can see. If you’d like, we’d even sell you a ticket or two. Tickets are only 6 for $5.00, and maybe, just maybe, your winning ticket would mean that this quilt would find it’s forever home on YOUR bed. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 16
Havasu Stitchers (Continued) Last night we also bid a fond farewell to our President, Linda Higuera as she announced her resignation. She and her husband are moving to Florida to be closer to family. Just sew you know, Linda, you will be greatly missed but not forgotten. You have left us with great memories of your dedication to Havasu Stitchers and the community. Your dedication to both will forever be remembered. Safe journey and blessings for a wonderful new adventure. Anyway, all is well here by the Lake. We are certainly challenged by the times, but we are forever grateful for our passion to quilt and our quilting Linda Higuera sisterhood. Quilting always seams to bring comfort to each of us in sew Box Created by Lisa Mousel many special ways. Stay well, my friends and we’ll chat again next time. Happy Quilting!!! Daisy Mountain Quilters of Anthem submitted by Janet Schrey As always, Daisy Mountain monthly meeting was filled with lots of energy. Susan Thomas arranged to have scissors and knives sharpened at a great price. Robin Wheat demonstrated our block of the month, which is a darling Scottie dog. We are all encouraged to make a block and return to our next meeting for a chance to win all the blocks. Cindy Fonseca gave an excellent presentation on how to prepare our quilts for the long armer. She shared with us some things we should and shouldn’t do when preparing the back of the quilt, especially if you are piecing it. We also watched a great presentation on You-tube regarding how and where to clean our machines. What an owner should clean and when to take it to your authorized dealer to have it professionally serviced. Show and Tell was filled with charity quilts, as well as, some fun home decorating. Janet Schrey shared her “This is my kinda town" she made during quarantine of 2020, and St. Patrick Day bench pillow and Easter pillow. Cher Kowalski shared her paper dolls she made using her embroidery machine, complete with accessories. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 18
Nimble Thimbles of Chandler submitted by Penny Boese Nimble Thimbles is exploring a move to a blended meeting with one meeting per month in person and one meeting per month via Zoom. The change will take place with our July meeting. However, the Board continues to monitor the spread of Covid in Arizona and will alter plans if necessary. In March, we completed a pin cushion exchange by mail. A sampling of our pin cushions are shown. We enjoyed receiving something special in the mail and sharing our pin cushions via Zoom. Thank you Melissa Bickham for such a great idea! At our first meeting in April, we heard from Heidi Pridemore of the Whimsical Workshop as she walked us through the making of Aurifil Threads and discussed uses for the various weights of thread. Kathy O’Brien reported that between July 1, 2020, and March 30, 2021, Nimble Thimbles received 336 community service quilts. Of those, 320 have been delivered to our Community Service partners, along with 207 bags that have been given to the Red Cross. Despite a pandemic, our Community Service efforts have been going strong! Thank you to all the members who have contributed to our efforts. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 19
Busy Bees of NW Phoenix submitted by Patty Woodford, Reporter At the Busy Bees March Business Meeting, the chapter welcomed back many members who have not been able to attend due to the pandemic. It was such a delight to have so many in attendance participating once again in our activities. WELCOME BACK Busy Bees, we have missed you! After the routine business portion of the gathering, Betsy Schallmo, presented an excellent program of “How To” using a Specialty Ruler, “The Dresden Express”. It was impressive to see how proficient she has become using this ruler, getting so many sizes and shapes of the Dresden Blade in such a precise manner. She certainly had our heads spinning “Dresden’s”. (At our Sew Day in March she displayed Dresden’s in all sizes, which she had made and was deciding on a background and placement. We are looking forward to seeing this finished quilt.) The BOM for April is “April Showers”. Patty Woodford presented the sample block. Another interesting highlight from our March Meeting took place during our Show and Tell. Member, Sharon Lichter. presented an outstanding grouping of projects that she had made during the month using ENTIRE pieces of her chosen fabrics from her stash. These projects ranged from the size of a large quilt down to a small hot pad. It was so inspiring to see all the different ways she had utilized all sizes of her scraps. (The photos show only a small portion of the number of pieces she displayed. Her proficiency is amazing!) Upcoming programs on the calendar are: Demos on the Two Block Quilt Patterns of Drunkards Path and Storm at Sea and “How To” Make a Folded Star Trivet. The Busy Bees welcome visitors at our monthly Business Meetings which are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. The chapter meets at the Westown Baptist Church, 11415 N. 35th Avenue in Phoenix. We are a small, friendly group that loves new members. Strawberry Patchers of Pine, Payson, Strawberry, Happy Jack submitted by Jackie Smith Welcome back Normal! Many vaccinated Patchers are very happy to gather again for regular business meetings and sew days, while still respecting social distance and mask usage. Thank you, Zoom, but we need our together time. The Patchers’ usual March destination quilt camp had to be canceled, as so many things these days, so we replaced it with a two-day “Mini Camp” in our regular meeting/sewing location. Just what the doctor ordered! We finished several community service projects and celebrated with lunches to support local restaurants. Our Secret Sister Tea Party that was cancelled in November has been rescheduled for May. And arrangements for a real destination quilt camp are being made for July. It’s so nice to look forward to some regular group activities again! In case you missed the announcement from previous posts, the Strawberry Patchers’ annual quilt show has been cancelled for June 2021 due to public safety concerns and the effect of Covid restrictions on large gatherings. However, we have high hopes for next year. Ingrid Jackie Jane Maureen Kris Joy www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 23
Paradise Valley Piecers of Phoenix submitted by Celeste Johnson With so many of our members being fully vaccinated, the Paradise Valley Piecers held an in-person meeting on Wednesday April 7th. We were outside at the Paradise Valley Community Center. Some of our members chose to wear masks and other chose to leave the mask at home or in their purse. It was so wonderful to see all the smiling faces and being able to give and receive hugs. Our get-together consisted of catching up with each others lives and families, and Show and Tell was over the top. The included photos showcase some of the members work while we’ve been isolating. Huge quilts to small quilts. Table runners, block carriers, and some fun foundation blocks. These gals have been super busy. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 24
Sunrise Stitchers’ of Scottsdale submitted by Nancy Cisar On Tuesday February 9, 26 of our group met on Zoom. We have been doing this for a year now and have become quite good at it to present various projects (if I must say!) We have renewed our monthly BOM: January BOM was “Jacob’s Ladder” in red on red with a white background for February’s month of Valentines’s day. The blocks were very attractive. A drawing was held for the winner of the blocks and each member who made a block will mail it to the winner. Next month’s block will be Dutchman’s Puzzle Block to include 2 purple prints for the flying geese with a white on white background. Instructions were provided to all. Joyce Jesko provided us with a birthday celebration for 2 members with February birthdays using Jib Jab. This program gives a great fun singing for the birthday people. We try to have a Tip of the Month: this month Pat Shah presented us with portable ironing surfaces using ceramic tiles of various sizes covered with a Terry cloth and material sewn like a pillow case to put the tile in; this is convenient to remove and wash when one is using fusible materials for appliqués to remove the sticky surface. Our program was “What to do with Orphan Blocks?” provided to us by Karen Brown. Karen took a stack of blocks in her stash and asked the questions of how many, size, theme, fabric, or what is important to you. “You make the rules” in this quilt. She lays the blocks out and continues to move them about until she has the shape and design she wants, A great way to use up those Orphan Blocks. You can view her on You Tube. Our last agenda item is Show and Tell. The pictures give you an idea of some of our members’ talents. We all look forward to meeting in person again. Some of us have been taking advantage of AQG’s educational offerings and have given great reviews of what they have learned. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 25
Sunrise Stitchers’ (Continued) Twenty-six members of our group met in March including 2 in Canada and 1 in Texas. Zoom has been great for us to keep in touch and share our quilting skills. We have been very productive during this last month. March was the month for our first UFO challenge. Almost all of the quilters presented their completed challenge. This was the first of 4 challenges for 2021. Each member has a list of 6 projects, under the title “UFO”. The next challenge UFO is due in May and its number was picked by Eva Kilgore, our chair. Now all need to be sewing quickly on this next challenge to have it ready for May. We were told that Hospice of the Valley is open to accepting quilts. Two of our members will be delivering 12 quilts made by Sunrise Stitchers during the next week. The March BOM was “Dutchman’s Puzzle Block”; each month a drawing is held to award the BOMs made to one lucky person. Currently each is sending the winner the block. The April BOM “Chain Link” was presented to the group with some directions on how to make it. Colors will reflect spring. We celebrated the March birthdays with a creative birthday video with Shania Twain singing and our birthday girls singing and dancing with Shania. What a party!! Our program was a presentation about QuiltCon 2021. This was a virtual quilt show this year sponsored by Modern Quilt Guild. Various quilts were highlighted with discussion of all the different talents of the quilters. This show can be viewed on the internet as well. Our members shared their quilt projects with us. Wendy showed a special quilt from Project 70273. This is a worldwide collaborative art project commemorating the lives of the physically and mentally disabled people murdered by German Nazis in 1940-41. 70273 signifies the number of murders. People from around the world make a block with 2 red crosses signifying a person and send it in; quilters volunteer to put these blocks together for completion. The goal is to gather 70273 blocks. At various times and locations during the year these quilts are displayed . If one thinks about the impact of this project, it is quite moving. Wendy volunteered to put together some of the blocks to make a quilt and showed the completed quilt. Creativity abounds in this group!! www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 26
Desert Threads of Sun Lakes submitted by Pat Sinclair Members of Desert Threads continue to “meet” on Zoom. Although not everyone is comfortable using Zoom, it provides a way to visit with friends and socialize. At the April meeting we watched a video and had a presentation on different types of batting in addition to Show and Tell. Our May meeting is scheduled to be held at the Phoenix Room in Cottonwood. We’re not having a program but highlighting accomplishments of the past year through displays. Because there will be tables both inside and outside the room, social distancing will be maintained. Everyone will be able to visit. At the May meeting voting on officers will be concluded and new officers introduced. This year we are trying something new using an online method, so the need to attend in order to cast a vote isn’t required. Any member may also cast their ballot at this meeting. Hopefully we will be able to continue meeting this year. Membership has also created a form online so it is easy to join Desert Threads and pay dues. This form makes it easy for the membership chair to keep information up to date. Lots of charity quilts have been completed this year and will be displayed at the meeting. In addition to bed-size quilts and flannel quilts for infants, this year we assembled fleece quilts to be given to homeless teens. Donated fabric has been organized and arranged into kits and our storage unit cleaned out so everything is ready for summer sewers. www.azquiltersguild.org May 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 27
