Spring Perryville Cleanup Submitted by Cindy Starzyk This year’s Spring Perryville Cleanup was on Saturday, April 20th and again, there was a very good turnout. Eighteen members participated. The weather was cold early on but after moving around and walking for just a little while we warmed up. We were able to finish the entire NICC adopted road area by about 11:20! It’s astonishing what peo- ple toss out of their cars, but for this cleanup there didn’t seem to be quite the vast quantities of trash we have experienced dur- ing previous cleanups. Our hard work was rewarded as fifteen of us dined at Granite City Food & Brewery (a NICC sponsor) in Cherry Valley. Thank you so much to all who volunteered: Gene and Linda Stimart, Steve and Barb Jackson, Dennis and Donna Mathews, Susan Chamberlain, Leon Gorsch, Jeff and Onie Drewelow, Ken and Cindy Starzyk, Russ and Debbie Schaefer, Barry Mikels, Bill and Kathleen Morr, and Brick Logan. Please forgive me if I missed anyone! 7 May 2019

NICC Governor’s Report Submitted by Jack Wilson On May 4, 2019, I attended the NCCC & MWR Governor Meetings held in St. Louis, MO. The following information is from those meetings. NCCC: The NCCC Treasury is in good shape with $675,000 in the bank and the 2019 YTD Budget is $25,000 under budget. th It is estimated there will be approximately 9,000 corvettes attend the NCM 25 Anniver- sary Celebration in August. rd NCCC is the 3 largest contributor to NCM. st NCCC has the 1 largest membership of all NCM organizations. th NCCC will have a tent at the 25 Anniversary to promote NCCC. rd Blue Bars was mailed to members on Friday May 3 from the vendor in Toledo. You should be getting yours this week. For those who are getting the electronic version of the Blue Bars vs. the hard copy mailed to your home, you need to go on the NCCC Website and click the Blue Bars box, then scroll to the current issue and view it there. It is not emailed to your email address. There will be 11 sets of tires given away this year. Five at Convention, Two for Scholarship, One for FCOA, and three with one set at each of the next three Governor Meetings via a raffle. Mid-America Corvette in Effingham, IL is no longer a NCCC Sponsor. NCCC has collected $33,000 for ST. Jude over the past 12 months. St. Jude’s fiscal year is May to April. Pat Kelly from the MWR has been FCOA Director for over 20 years. She is retiring and Shannon Davis from the MWR was appointed to take over this position effective immediately. NCCC has 17,867 members, which is down 153 over 2018. The 2018 Competition Rulebook still is the only one to use. There was no new Rulebook proposed for 2019. There will be a new Rulebook proposed in September to be approved for 2019. There has been an effort by the Dir. Of Public Relations to increase NCCC membership by approaching the 21 largest Chevrolet Dealers to put our brochures and applications in their new and used cars. There has been no interest with these dealers after repeated attempts. However, there has been some active interest with smaller dealerships to do this. Therefore, it is being asked, if you have a relationship with a Chevrolet dealer who would be interested in this, please contact John Cantelmo, NCCC Dir. of Public Rela- tions (contact info is on the NCCC Website), and let him know who to contact. There is an AACA (Antique Auto Club of America) Museum in Hershey, PA. They have generously offered for NCCC to have 3 cars for 6 months on display in their museum to promote NCCC. In addition, they are providing us with a 10’x25’x2’ display case to show and promote NCCC. If you have a car or are in the area, make sure this is one of your stops. We had a couple of dozen NCCC members pass away since the Feb. 2019 meeting. 2019 NCCC Convention in Denver, CO.: There are 414 adults & 10 youth registered YTD. st 81 (20%) of the registrants are 1 time convention goers. The Casino and Georgetown Train ride still have openings. There are a few host hotel rooms open. Continued on Page 10 10 May 2019
Continued from Page 9 There are only 6 golfers signed up. A minimum of 12 are needed, otherwise, the event will be cancelled. Hagerty & Condon Skelly Insurance and Michelin Tire are having seminars at convention. 2020 Convention in Indianapolis is progressing along well. There has been no one come forward to put on the 2021 Convention. This is a two year planning project that needs to begin now. We need someone and/or ideas as to what we should do for 2021. MWR: MWR has 2,481 members with 27 clubs. The autocross events will still be at Rantoul’s Hangar #2 thru May. The sale of the property is planned for June. MWR has had five members pass away since our Feb. 2019 meeting. Larry Pagliaro, MWR RE, has implemented a MWR Member Recognition to be put into Blue Bars. If you know of anyone who has achieved a Non-Corvette or Non-Club related activity, please provide that to me, and I will get it to Larry. NICC: Reminder that our NICC Autocross classroom and driving school is next Sat. 5/11 from 1 to 5 PM at the Christ Lutheran Church at 425 East Riverside Blvd, Belvidere, IL. We have 15 signed up. If you still want to at- tend, sign up on the sheet at the 5/4 Club Mtg. or call Jack or Dale and let us know you would like to attend. A waiver is required for this event for you to sign. You will use your corvette to drive the course. Non- corvettes will not be used for training. 30 new pylons have been purchased along with 2 stand-up scissor type “Slow Caution” signs. These are for our car shows and autocross events. Happy Motoring ! Any questions or comments you would like to discuss with me, please either email me at jwracers@aol.com or call me at 815-885 -2700. From the Editor Editor: Preston Morgan Do you have a favorite Corvette year and/or generation? Maybe you have more than one. Perhaps you have an entire list. No doubt that any “favorites” list will meet with disagree- ment. Is it possible that you have never thought about a “favorite” or even considered cre- ating a “best of” list of Corvettes that you would proudly show to others? Over the next few months, I will take one Corvette from the following article and build a list of iconic Cor- vettes that could stand as a “favorite.” I encourage members to send me their comments, both agreement and disagreement about the Corvettes on the list. Top Ten Greatest Chevrolet Corvettes Ever Built by Ciprian Florea https://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/top-10-greatest-chevrolet-corvettes-ever-built-ar178362.html 1967 Corvette Stingray L88 Significantly more aggressive than its predecessor design-wise, the C2-gen Corvette also spawned higher per- formance versions. The L88 was the C2 to end all C2s and arrived in the generation’s final year on the mar- ket, 1967. The badge came from the engine, as the L88 was a beefed-up variant of the 7.0-liter V-8 that Chevrolet introduced in 1966. Not only more powerful, it was also closer to a pure racing powerplant than any other engine Chevy had ever offered in a production car. It had lightweight heads and bigger ports, hotter camshaft, stratospheric 12.5:1 compression, an aluminum radiator, small-diameter flywheel, and a single huge Holley four-barrel carburetor. The very high compression ratio required 103-octane racing fuel, which wasn’t widely available at U.S. service stations. Output was officially rated at 430 horsepower, but word has it that the L88 was actually capable of around 560 horses at 6,400 rpm. Naturally, the L88 didn’t come cheap. With the Positraction, transistorized ignition, heavy-duty suspension, power brakes, and radio and heater delete options made mandatory with the package, the L88 added an extra $1,500 over the base $4,240 price. As a result, only 20 units were sold, which makes the L88 one of the rarest Corvettes ever built. Not only more powerful, the L88 engine was also closer to a pure racing powerplant than any other engine Chevy had ever offered. 14 May 2019
L.A.C.E.s (Ladies Awesome Corvette Experiences) By Nina Morgan Preston and I have been working on the Spring Run to Pontiac. I hope that many of you are able to join us. It looks to be a lot of fun! This month we are featuring Linda Stimart, who is NICC’s Webmaster. She does a great job of keeping the club in- formed of current events. Look for information on the Pontiac Spring Run in this edition of Vette Visions! Meet Linda Stimart…… “I grew up in Rockford and when I was a teenager, my friends and I would go to downtown Rockford to the movies and then sit on State Street and watch all the cars cruise by. We always loved to see the Corvettes. Being teenagers though, we always asked why all the good-looking Corvettes were being driven by Old Guys with Grey hair. Before Gene and I were married, I dated a guy with a beautiful orange Cor- vette. Boy did I want to drive that car, but he never let me no matter how many times I asked. When Gene and I were dating he owned a hot rod, a 1972 Nova that he and his friends were always working on. He would call me on my phone and rev up the engine to let me hear how it sounded. I guess that was his version of a love call. Gene had always wanted a Corvette and when he retired, he finally purchased one. Our first Corvette was a black 1997 C5 he bought from a member of the Corvette Club who worked at Bockers. He was having the door repaired when Gene saw it and offered to buy it. Boy was his wife surprised when he told her he had sold the Corvette. After we bought the ’97, we joined NICC. The first couple of years we belonged, we really didn’t drive the Corvette much. It sat in the garage looking pretty though. Things changed when Janet Pieffer took over as social director and volunteered our help. It also changed when the club started doing Mini runs. Prior to this, the majority of the club were racers. I think now we have a nice mix of both. This last year Gene and I have helped with some of the Low Speed Events and it’s been great fun. After several years, we decided to sell the ‘97 and bought a black 2008 C6 which we still own. Everyone asked why we didn’t keep the ‘97 for me and I always tell them “because it was Black”. If you’ve ever owned a black vehicle, you’ll know why. Gene and I really enjoy the club and everyone in it. It’s like a big family and being web master has really kept me involved. We have gone on some fantastic runs and have met and developed some great friends. We look forward to more adventures this year. We found that the more you do in the club the more you enjoy it. Get Involved!! You won’t regret it.” 15 May 2019
