The Editor Speaks Dear Members Met the God of Fortune doing his “wealth distribution” rounds when you visited the Club during Chinese New Year (CNY)? Lucky you! This and a lion dance capped CNY celebrations at NSRCC which started on Feb 1 with a lunch hosted by Club President, LG Melvyn Ong, for General Committee members and Management Staff of NSRCC. On a separate occasion, LG Ong was given a tour of the site of the new driving range that is under construction and briefed on the progress of this much anticipated facility which already has a commanding presence within the club premises and even in the vicinity of Changi Coast Road! Golf and Bowling are two of the most popular sports in NSRCC, and we feature in this issue some personalities who personify the spirit of these sports. There is avid golfer Timothy Quah who doggedly continues to play the game he loves after overcoming a serious health issue. And we have two talented youth bowlers Hazel Tan and Ashley Zulkifly Minyi who went on a winning spree of tournaments in Singapore and Malaysia recently. Golfers may wish to take note of the illustrated article on course marking changes at Changi and Kranji which will affect play. They include OB markers, drop zones and penalty areas. Do have a read to prepare yourselves before going for your next round of golf. And since we are on the subject of getting ready, do look out for the NSRCC Charity Golf 2019 which falls on May 4-5 this year. The proceeds will be donated to organisations such as Assisi Hospice, Villa Francis Home for the Aged, AWWA and Food from the Heart. This signature charity event organised by NSRCC in support of worthy causes has received tremendous support from members over many years and your support again this year will definitely be appreciated. Have fun at the Club! Regards, Chua Swee Kiat Editor RESORT VIEW 3 115098 RV Magazine (Mar-April) 26.02.19_Text_FINAL.indd 3 26/2/19 11:41 AM

Seen & Heard When the Tough Get Going NSRCC Member, Mr Timothy Quah T he saying, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”, perfectly describes Mr Timothy Quah who has been a member of NSRCC for the past 15 years. Mr Quah who has been an avid golfer for 25 years, faced one of the darkest moments of his life when he was diagnosed with an abnormal heart rhythm. It was during a game of golf back in 2004, when one of his flight mates noticed he was out of breath, and advised him to get medically checked. Seen & Heard Upon seeing a Specialist, Mr Quah was admitted to hospital for immediate treatment. He was required to use a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), which is a battery-operated mechanical heart pump surgically implanted in the heart to pump blood to his entire body. An entire change to his lifestyle and daily activities was something Mr Quah had to adapt to. Fond activities such as trekking up to Bukit Timah Hill and Macritchie Reservoir, swimming, sunbathing and relaxing in a sauna came to a complete halt. His plight did not dampen his spirits in trying his best to continue what he loved most – golf. He saw this as an opportunity to live life to the fullest and resumed playing golf again, even if it meant sacrificing driving distance. And as every cloud has a silver lining, he saw each golf game with his close buddies as a form of fellowship. Through the encouragement and support of this loving wife Iris and his family, Mr Quah discovered the existential reasons for living. Always remember safety first! in front but still on the fairway. He claimed that his shot was not able to reach the front flight. This was of course not acceptable, as his ball landed just 5 metres short of them. For the risk of putting the front flight in danger, he was suspended for 6 months due to dangerous play. There are many more such instances where the lack of patience has resulted in suspension due to dangerous play. Kranji Hole 3: - Remember to park buggies in the middle of the fairway so that back flight can see. Last but not least, golfers are advised to drive their buggies with due care and consideration, and to observe safety at all times. Patience is the mother of all virtues so let’s work together and make this a safer club for all to enjoy the wonderful game of golf! Kranji Hole 4: - it is nearer than you think it is! To help you enjoy your game of golf better with your friends, here are a few tips to consider: Tan Kah Han Club Captain 115098 RV Magazine (Mar-April) 26.02.19_Text_FINAL.indd 10 26/2/19 11:41 AM
Golf 1-0-1 contributor Brian Tan is a member of the Greens Committee, and oversees Rules and Tournaments at NSRCC. When he’s not busy officiating as a Rules Official, he can be found contributing balls to NSRCC’s penalty areas. L F G 101 Removal of Drop Zone at NSRCC Changi Hole #5 There has been further members’ feedback regarding disputes caused by the presence of a drop zone on Hole #5 at NSRCC Changi despite a previous Golf 101 article explaining how it should be used in the spirit of the game. For context, the previous Golf 101 surmised that whilst the rules technically allowed such use, the drop zone should not be used to gain an inequitable advantage by using the drop zone if a ball entered the penalty area further from the hole than the location of the drop zone. The article also tabled a review of Local Rules once the new 2019 Rules of Golf were in place. The new 2019 Rules of Golf and the associated model Local Rules are now in place, but after much research, they do not envisage such scenarios where players gain inequitable advantages (cause players are not supposed to). One option is to craft a somewhat complicated set of Local Rules governing when that drop zone can be used (as opposed to golfers playing by the spirit of the game). The more elegant option would be to remove the drop zone altogether. With the new 2019 Rules, it becomes easier for a player to determine the Relief Area for dropping, and dropping the ball from knee height allows players a bit more control over the lie their ball drops into. Thus, if a player’s ball enters the Yellow Staked Penalty Area fronting the Putting Green on Hole 5 now, the player should take Relief under Rule 17.1. 115098 RV Magazine (Mar-April) 26.02.19_Text_FINAL.indd 11 26/2/19 11:41 AM
