In & Around Meet our New General Manager Hello Everyone! I am Christopher Chew, the newly appointed General Manager of Sembawang Country Club. I eagerly look forward to meeting all of you and working with you to deliver “a premier golf and country club” that all of us can be proud of. After working almost three decades in the RSAF as a helicopter pilot, getting a job as GM at Sembawang Country Club is a dream come true. It’s really a privilege to be able to start my career in Sembawang Air Base when I joined the RSAF and start another career in Sembawang Country Club. A little bit about myself so that we can start future conversations when we meet: I am happily married to Lisa and we have two lovely children; Gregory (20) and Natalie (16). We also have two dogs (Toby the Corgi and Max the Cavoodle) in our household whom we love and count as part of the family. When I was serving in the RSAF, I had been assigned to various appointments in the Air Manpower Department, Joint Plans and Transformation Department, Air Operations Department and SAFTI MI. I spent most of my time in the RSAF flying helicopters in 123 Squadron and 120 Squadron. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with the family. We are almost always at the park with our dogs and at home. On the rare occasion, I enjoy playing golf and soccer. I have recently started to pick up trail walking, so hope to see some of you at the trails around Singapore. My team and I will work hard to ensure that all of you will have an enjoyable experience at the club on every single visit. We will also continue the good work that the previous GMs have embarked on. We will work hard to continue to achieve SCC’s vision and mission. We have grand plans to deliver our Mission of providing you with an exclusive and enjoyable Golf and Country Club for you are your families. Stay tuned to these updates! Thank you for having me on board as your General Manager. Sembawang 02 Country Club

In & Around By GM Mr Christopher Chew It is vital that all of us do our part and exercise social responsibility to stem the tide of COVID-19. Should any member feel under the weather, just let us know, we will cancel your golf slot with no penalty! I understand that weathering these difficult, unprecedented times means confusion and anxiety for many of you. From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate your unwavering support for SCC and seek your understanding and patience as we overcome this together. Use of alternate bays at the club’s driving range. Captain's Column By ME7 Teh Chong Ann (written in March 2020) Hello SCC friends, Health seems to be the topic-of-the-day as February and March have been exceptionally intense with the nation wrestling against COVID-19. We hope that the situation will take a turn for the better as we head into April. In the meantime, life has to go on. So, if you are bored of social isolation at home, why not consider coming down for a game of golf? You will be able to practise social distancing with eight minutes separating each flight, while enjoying the fresh air that SCC has to offer. However, of course, please refrain from shaking hands (or any other intimate gestures for that matter), unless it’s a hole-in-one. P.S. If you are sick or have been to high-risk areas recently, do stay at home for at least 14 days first. To ensure your wellbeing, SCC has taken several measures. First, we have increased our level of housekeeping to maintain high standards of hygiene. Second, we have commenced temperature screening at the club. The screening points are at the main lobby and beside the Pro Shop. While you can still drop your bags at the bag drop station, please remind your fellow golfers to enter only from the screening points. Third, for the purpose of contact tracing, we will be collecting personal data during the COVID-19 outbreak. These measures may take some time but together, we can overcome. Do arrive earlier for your golf game and wash your hands frequently. In addition to taking care of our members, we have also paid extra attention to the wellbeing of our SCC course. We have hired a new arborist and reviewed our tree inspection programme. We hope that this will minimise the probability of fallen trees, especially during the monsoon seasons. Emergency numbers are also pasted on the buggies’ windshield. If you see anything, please do not hesitate to call or WhatsApp us. After all, your safety is our priority. To healthy golfers and a healthy golf course! Chong Ann and Retro Sembawang 05 Country Club
Ladies' Corner By Lady Captain ME5 Emily Lee “SPIN THE FORTUNE” SCC LADIES COHESION 15 Feb 2020 A total of 33 female golfers participated in this quarterly Cohesion Event organised by SCC Ladies’ Committee, in a bid to build up the ladies golfing community in SCC and forge closer ties among the young, rookie, senior and experienced golfers. Through a fun round of golf, our ladies were encouraged to mingle and get to know each other better. This was also another great avenue to welcome new female golfers who had just joined the club. A Big Pow Wow before the Team Challenge commences! Sembawang 06 Country Club
Ladies' Corner By Lady Captain ME5 Emily Lee The newbies inducted were Ms Michelle Ng, Ms Go Theng Theng, Ms Tan Me Me, Ms Caryn Lee, Ms Ng Lee Peng, Ms Amanda Ng and Ms Liang Xiujuan. The theme for this event was “Spin the Fortune Ball”, most befitting for a post-Chinese New Year gathering. It was extremely exciting and the entire process required an experienced golfer to lead, strategize and guide her teammates to maximise their scoring potential. While the golf game was played as per normal, for Spin the Fortune Ball, one player in the team will be appointed to play a Fortune Ball (i.e. a coloured ball) for every hole and the team score will be the aggregate of the Stableford points scored by the Fortune ball for the 18-hole game. A separate Individual challenge based on Stableford points was also played in parallel to the team game. Sembawang 07 Country Club
Ladies' Corner By Lady Captain ME5 Emily Lee What a sight it was to behold; our lovely ladies amusing themselves thoroughly on the golf course. As the saying goes, with ladies around, you can be sure the sun will shine all day long. Summer Days Are Here! After the delightful game, a simple post-game dinner was held at Golfers Terrace, where the newbies were introduced properly. This was followed by a Prize Presentation and Lucky Draw for all. The Individual Stableford winners were awarded to the Top 3 positions, as well as positions with the Number “8” (i.e 8th, 18th and 28th positions). Additionally, the second-last position golfer was given a prize too -- as a form of encouragement to spur her on to work harder on her golf skills! Sembawang 08 Country Club
Ladies' Corner By Lady Captain ME5 Emily Lee Here are the Top 3 Team Winners and some photos of other prize winners: Overall, it was a fantastic day out for all the ladies. You can tell that all of them had a blast from the bright, radiant smiles on their faces. Hope to see all of them again, plus more ladies at the next SCC Ladies Cohesion Event! Greeted by fantastic weather, members enjoyed a wonderful day of golf. After their game, members merrily rubbed shoulders with Cai Shen Ye (God of Wealth) while enjoying the lion and dragon dance performances. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the evening was when members tossed the Prosperity Yusheng high in the air for good fortune in the new year. Members were also surprised by the lucky voucher hidden under their seat and were beaming from ear to ear when they received a lucky Ang Pow from Club Chairman BG Dinesh Vasu Dash. Golf Tips Stop Hitting Fat and Thin Shots – Two Quick Fixes By Butch Harmon and Peter Morrice Photos and Illustrations by J.D. Cuban, Alexander Joe, Harry Campbell Credits: Golf Digest A lot of golfers never get over the instinct to lift the ball off the ground. They swing off their back foot or flip their hands through impact, both of which make the club bottom out too soon. As a result, they hit the ground first (fat shot) or catch the ball on the upswing (thin shot). Photo credit: J.D. Cuban If that sounds familiar, let me give you two simple keys. First, make your initial move from the top a little bump onto your front foot. Feel like you’re shifting toward the target, so your chest is over the ball. Second, get to impact with the back of your top hand facing the target (left), not pointing upward. A good image is that you’re back-handing the ball, like a tennis stroke. If you get those two moves right, you’ll swing into impact with your weight forward and your wrists firm — two things every good ball-striker does. Sembawang 15 Country Club
Golf Tips Stop Hitting Fat and Thin Shots – Two Quick Fixes In the 2003 Presidents Cup in South Africa, two of the sweetest swingers at that time, Adam Scott and Stuart Appleby, were matched against two of the most unconventional, Jim Furyk and Jay Haas. As they warmed up, murmurs from the crowd suggested the “pretty” swings had it made. At one point, Jay said to Jim, “I bet those people don’t give us much of a chance.” Jim laughed, and the Americans went on to win, 6 and 5, one of the most lopsided victories in the history of the event. Don’t get me wrong, Adam and Stuart are tremendous talents. (I taught Adam for years.) But the only real barometer of a golf swing is the shots it produces. Photo Credit: Alexander Joe THE WIDE CHOICE If you’re playing irons with thin heads and soles, you’re missing out. Clubs with wider bottoms, especially hybrids, are a lot more forgiving on off-centre hits. The wider soles also help shots get in the air, and with more mass behind the ball, your strikes will feel really solid. Also, consider graphite shafts that give you a little kick at the bottom of the swing for a softer feel and higher trajectory. Illustration by Harry Campbell Sembawang 16 Country Club
Club Improvements Re-opening of Ladies’ Changing Room at Golfers’ Terrace The much-awaited re-opening of the Ladies’ Changing Room at Golfers’ Terrace on 17 Jan 2020 was greeted with immense delight by the ladies. It was a refreshing change as the refurbished place looks brighter and cleaner. The newly replaced locks also make it more convenient for female members, as they can now dangle their keys around their wrists, without fear of losing access to their lockers. One satisfied member, Ms Jean Oh, said, “It is good to know that the club is constantly upgrading and maintaining its facilities for the comfort of its members.” Echoing similar sentiments was Ms Joyce Heng, who said, “The new mosaic design in the showers give the facilities a new resort-like feel.” New counter Modern entrance to the showing emphasis Changing Room on SCC’s values Resort-like showers Clean and bright locker area New locks Sembawang 17 Country Club
Club Events SCC Staff and Committee Golf 2020 It was a bright and beautiful afternoon on Tuesday 28th January 2020. Promptly at 3pm, all participants headed to their respective tees to mark their first shot of an interesting 4-ball Texas Scramble. The men teed off from the white tee box, while the ladies teed off from the red tee box. Each team had a combination of two staff and two committee members who came in support of SCC staff day. The staff were extremely appreciative. The Texas Scramble, based on Stableford Points, is a form of Team competition where four players teed off and only one best drive was chosen to be used for the next shot. All team players played their subsequent shot from the chosen point and all team members played a second shot from this point. From these second shots, the best shot would again be picked and all the members would play the third shot from this point and so on - until the ball is holed. This format allowed all members of the team to work cooperatively with much joy. It was an afternoon of fun and camaraderie! The evening event turned out to be just as rambunctious as everyone gathered at the Banquet Hall to enjoy a delightful and sumptuous dinner with many games to spruce up their night. It was a memorable and wonderful day which prompted General Manager Chris Chew to quip, “We will do this again. Three cheers for a wonderful event!” Bright and sunny for a good day of golf Sumptuous feast! Sembawang 18 Country Club

Club Events SCC’s Youngest Hole-In-One Golfer Meet Sembawang Country Club’s youngest golfer to score a hole-in-one – Natalie Wang. Natalie, daughter of member Mr Alex Wang, is turning 11 this year and only started golf lessons three years ago. On 22 December 2019, she made an ace at our Par 3, Hole 6. When asked about her amazing feat, she recalls vividly, “It was a red tee to a red flag, about 90 metres, down slope. My daddy and my uncle Kwan Kiat helped me to align my shot.” Upon seeing that she had hit a hole-in-one, she almost couldn’t believe it. “When I first saw the ball going straight at the hole, I thought that my eyes were playing tricks on me!” Surely, this is an inspiring piece of news to boost the confidence in all our golfers! Congratulations Natalie! Bravo! Hole 6 20 Sembawang Country Club
Know our Staff Ziela If you have joined the Club in the last 8 years, you would have first met our Membership Officer, Ziela, who assisted you in your membership application. Always with her signature Colgate-smile and cheery tone, she makes all new members feel welcomed and is ever ready to help existing members with their golfers’ insurance claims, absent, spouse and junior membership applications and updating of personal particulars. Ziela, though can easily deceive as a schoolgirl with her petite size, is already a mother of one and another on the way… and she also owns two fur kids! Chun Fuk Chun Fuk is our Operations & Facilities Executive and can often be seen at every corner of the club with his toolbox. Yes, he is the Club’s handyman who knows the Club inside out. With his team of four, he ensures our facilities are in good order and constantly strives to improve them with his DIY ideas. In his five years with the Club, the most challenging job which he had done would be the installation of the wooden panels behind the ladies and men changing rooms. It took the team more than two weeks to complete. Kudos to their good work! Outside of work, he spends his free time gardening and fishing. Sembawang 21 Country Club
Know our Staff Shim Shim, from the Finance Department, may not be known to many of our members though she has been with the Club for six years. She is our Accounts (Payable) Assistant and she handles the financial processing of transactions for the Club which include reconciliation and verification of invoices and ensuring that prompt payments are made to our suppliers and vendors. In her free time, she enjoys watching Korean dramas but she is definitely no Drama Queen! Contrarily, she has a demure and soft-spoken nature, which makes her well-liked by her colleagues. Zarina If you’ve ever called up the club to make enquiries, chances are, you would have heard Zarina’s voice. Often the first point of contact for many guests and visitors, Zarina, our Customer Service Assistant, is a bundle of energy with her friendly disposition and lively demeanour. The youthful grandma of one loves her job immensely, especially the aspects of meeting people, mingling and cracking jokes with members. She has been with the club since September 2018. Zarina’s motto? Life is short, just enjoy it and stay young at heart! In her free time, she likes singing and travelling (check out the cool photo of her in sunglasses - taken in Kashmir, India). Know our Staff Auntie Phua Mdm Phua Ah Moi, dearly known to many of us as Auntie Phua, is a familiar face to our lady golfers at the Golfers Terrace Changing Room. The club has been her second home for the past 20 years. To her, it has always been a joy to serve our members. Her favourite pastime is playing mah-jong, so who knows, she may just be our next SCC Mahjong Queen! She is pleased to share some of her family photos here with all of you. Rez Rez, our Golfing Assistant, said the 8 years she has had at the club so far has been awesome! She says she is looking forward to many more good years at the Club. She enjoys organising golf events for the Club as this gives her the opportunity to mingle with members and colleagues. To her, the Club is her second home and everyone feels like a family member. Besides work, she enjoys travelling and cooking. She has also recently taken up golf and is always looking forward to be ‘jio-ed’ for a game. Sembawang 23 Country Club

Staff Excellence Award January to March 2020 Congratulations to all of them, and well done! Sumthram Shangerganes Golf Marshal Golf Marshal Animuthu John S/O Marimuthu Golf Marshal Facilities Supervisor Bouquets Observed staff / cleaner cleaning and wiping handrails with sterilizer cleaner. Keep it up. Great responsibility and care for members! Alan Chan Gim Seng, 4 Feb 2020 I had a game at your club on Friday 14th Feb. 2020 with three other friends (all visitors). I realised three days after the game that I had left my rangefinder in buggy. Decided to call the Club and much to my delight, it was handed into the office. I would like to sincerely thank and commend your staff at the buggy return station for their professionalism and integrity. And, thank you for the wonderful day my friends and I had at Sembawang Country Club. Guest, 19 Feb 2020 Crispy roast chicken plus braised e-fu noodles with mushroom was good – they were part of the CNY menu. Great if the above could be included in the regular menu! Martin Lui Kim Foo, 26 Jan 2020 I want to express my appreciation for Kumar and Vijay who work in the Men’s Changing Room. I find both of them helpful and responsible towards the members and guest requests. Also, kudos to Kumar for his honesty for keeping and returning an item I left behind in the changing room.
